Genèse 18
1 Or le Seigneur apparut dans la vallée de Mambré, à Abraham, assis à l’entrée de sa tente dans la grande chaleur du jour.
Then the Lord appeared to him, in the steep valley of Mamre, when he was sitting at the door of his tent, in the very heat of the day.
2 Car, lorsqu’il eut levé les yeux, trois hommes lui apparurent se tenant près de lui; et lorsqu’il les eut vus, il courut au-devant d’eux de l’entrée de sa tente, et il se prosterna en terre.
And when he had lifted up his eyes, there appeared to him three men, standing near him. When he had seen them, he ran to meet them from the door of his tent, and he reverenced them on the ground.
3 Et il dit: Seigneur, si j’ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux, ne passe pas au-delà de ton serviteur.
And he said: “If I, O lord, have found grace in your eyes, do not pass by your servant.
4 J’apporterai un peu d’eau, et vous laverez vos pieds, et vous vous reposerez sous cet arbre.
But I will bring a little water, and you may wash your feet and rest under the tree.
5 Je vous servirai aussi un peu de pain; et vous reprendrez vos forces, puis vous irez plus loin, car c’est pour cela que vous êtes venus vers votre serviteur. Ils lui répondirent: Fais ce que tu as dit.
And I will set out a meal of bread, so that you may strengthen your heart; after this you will pass on. It is for this reason that you have turned aside to your servant.” And they said, “Do as you have spoken.”
6 Et Abraham alla en toute hâte à sa tente vers Sara, et lui dit: Pétris vite trois mesures de fleur de farine, et fais des pains cuits sous la cendre.
Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah, and he said to her, “Quickly, mix together three measures of the finest wheat flour and make loaves baked under the ashes.”
7 Et lui-même courut au troupeau, et en prit un veau tendre et excellent; et il le donna à un serviteur qui se hâta et le fit cuire.
In truth, he himself ran to the herd, and he took a calf from there, very tender and very good, and he gave it to a servant, who hurried and boiled it.
8 Il prit aussi du beurre et du lait, et le veau qu’il avait fait cuire, et le mit devant eux; et lui-même se tenait debout près d’eux sous l’arbre.
Likewise, he took butter and milk, and the calf which he had boiled, and he placed it before them. Yet truly, he himself stood near them under the tree.
9 Quand ils eurent mangé, ils lui demandèrent: Où est Sara ta femme? Il répondit: La voilà dans la tente.
And when they had eaten, they said to him, “Where is Sarah your wife?” He answered, “Behold, she is in the tent.”
10 L’un d’eux dit: En retournant, je viendrai vers toi en ce temps-ci, vous vivant encore, et Sara ta femme aura un fils. Ce qu’ayant entendu, Sara rit derrière la porte de la tente.
And he said to him, “When returning, I will come to you at this time, with life as a companion, and your wife Sarah will have a son.” Hearing this, Sarah laughed behind the door of the tent.
11 Car ils étaient tous deux vieux et d’un âge fort avancé, et Sara n’avait plus ses mois.
Now they were both old, and in an advanced state of life, and it had ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women.
12 Elle rit en cachette, disant: Après que je suis devenue vieille, et que mon seigneur est un peu bien vieux, penserai-je au plaisir?
And she laughed secretly, saying, “After I have grown old, and my lord is elderly, shall I give myself to the work of delight?”
13 Mais le Seigneur dit à Abraham: Pourquoi Sara a-t-elle ri, disant: Est-ce que vraiment je dois enfanter, moi vieille?
Then the Lord said to Abraham: “Why did Sarah laugh, saying: ‘How can I, an old woman, actually give birth?’
14 Est-ce qu’à Dieu quelque chose est difficile? Selon ma parole, je reviendrai vers toi, en ce même temps, vous vivant encore, et Sara aura un fils.
Is anything difficult for God? According to the announcement, he will return to you at this same time, with life as a companion, and Sarah will have a son.”
15 Sara le nia, disant: Je n’ai pas ri; car elle était saisie de crainte. Mais le Seigneur: Il n’en est pas ainsi, dit-il; mais tu as ri.
Sarah denied it, saying, “I did not laugh.” For she was terribly afraid. But the Lord said, “It is not so; for you did laugh.”
16 Lors donc que ces hommes furent partis de là, ils tournèrent les yeux vers Sodome; et Abraham allait avec eux, les reconduisant.
Therefore, when the men had risen up from there, they directed their eyes against Sodom. And Abraham traveled with them, leading them.
17 Alors le Seigneur dit: Pourrai-je cacher à Abraham ce que je vais faire,
And the Lord said: “How could I hide what I am about to do from Abraham,
18 Puisqu’il doit être père d’une nation grande et très puissante, et que doivent être bénies en lui toutes les nations de la terre?
since he will become a great and very robust nation, and in him all the nations of the earth will be blessed?
19 Car je sais qu’il ordonnera à ses enfants et à sa maison après lui, de garder la voie du Seigneur, et de pratiquer l’équité et la justice, afin que le Seigneur accomplisse à cause d’Abraham tout ce qu’il lui a dit.
For I know that he will instruct his sons, and his household after him, to keep to the way of the Lord, and to act with judgment and justice, so that, for the sake of Abraham, the Lord may bring about all the things that he has spoken to him.”
20 Le Seigneur dit donc: La clameur de Sodome et de Gomorrhe s’est multipliée, et leur péché s’est agravé outre mesure,
And so the Lord said, “The outcry from Sodom and Gomorrah has been multiplied, and their sin has become exceedingly grievous.
21 Je descendrai, et je verrai, si la clameur qui est venue jusqu’à moi, elles l’ont accomplie par leurs œuvres: s’il n’en est pas ainsi, que je le sache.
I will descend and see whether they have fulfilled the work of the outcry that has reached me, or whether it is not so, in order that I may know.”
22 Et ils partirent de là, et ils s’en allèrent vers Sodome; mais Abraham se tenait encore devant le Seigneur.
And they turned themselves from there, and they went toward Sodom. Yet in truth, Abraham still stood in the sight of the Lord.
23 Et s’approchant, il dit: Est-ce que vous perdrez le juste avec l’impie?
And as they drew near, he said: “Will you destroy the just with the impious?
24 S’il se trouve cinquante justes dans la ville, périront-ils avec les autres? et ne pardonnerez-vous pas à ce lieu à cause de ces cinquante justes, s’ils s’y trouvent?
If there were fifty of the just in the city, will they perish with the rest? And will you not spare that place for the sake of fifty of the just, if they were in it?
25 Loin de vous de faire cela, de perdre le juste avec l’impie, en sorte que le juste soit traité comme l’impie; cela n’est pas de vous: vous qui jugez toute la terre, vous ne rendrez nullement ce jugement.
Far be it from you to do this thing, and to kill the just with the impious, and for the just to be treated like the impious. No, this is not like you. You judge all the earth; you would never make such a judgment.”
26 Le Seigneur lui répondit: Si je trouve à Sodome cinquante justes, dans l’enceinte de la ville, je pardonnerai à tout ce lieu à cause d’eux.
And the Lord said to him, “If I find in Sodom fifty of the just in the midst of the city, I will release the entire place because of them.”
27 Et reprenant. Abraham dit: Puisque j’ai déjà commencé, je parlerai à mon Seigneur, quoique je ne sois que poussière et cendre.
And Abraham responded by saying: “Since now I have begun, I will speak to my Lord, though I am dust and ashes.
28 Et s’il y avait cinquante justes, moins cinq, détruiriez-vous, parce qu’il n’y en aurait que quarante-cinq, la ville entière? Et le Seigneur dit: Je ne la détruirai pas, si j’en trouve là quarante-cinq.
What if there were five less than fifty of the just? Would you, despite the forty-five, eliminate the entire city?” And he said, “I will not eliminate it, if I find forty-five there.”
29 Et il lui parla de nouveau: Mais s’il s’en trouve là quarante, que ferez-vous? Dieu répondit: Je ne la frapperai pas, à cause des quarante.
And again he said to him, “But if forty were found there, what would you do?” He said, “I will not strike, for the sake of the forty.”
30 Je vous prie, Seigneur, ajouta Abraham, ne vous fâchez point, si je parle encore: Et s’il s’en trouve là trente? Le Seigneur répondit: Je ne le ferai pas, si j’en trouve là trente.
“I ask you,” he said, “not to be angry, Lord, if I speak. What if thirty were found there?” He responded, “I will not act, if I find thirty there.”
31 Puisque j’ai déjà commencé, dit encore Abraham, je parlerai à mon Seigneur: Et s’il s’y en trouvait vingt? Le Seigneur répondit: Je ne la détruirai pas, à cause des vingt.
“Since now I have begun,” he said, “I will speak to my Lord. What if twenty were found there?” He said, “I will not put to death, for the sake of the twenty.”
32 Je vous conjure. Seigneur, reprit Abraham, ne vous irritez pas, si je parle encore une fois: Et s’il s’en trouve là dix? Et le Seigneur dit: Je ne la détruirai pas à cause des dix.
“I beg you,” he said, “not to be angry, Lord, if I speak yet once more. What if ten were found there?” And he said, “I will not destroy it for the sake of the ten.”
33 Et le Seigneur s’en alla, après qu’il eut cessé de parler à Abraham, et Abraham retourna en sa demeure.
And the Lord departed, after he had ceased speaking to Abraham, who then returned to his place.
