Deutéronome 25

1 S’il survient un débat entre quelques hommes, et qu’ils en appellent aux juges, celui qu’ils reconnaîtront pour juste, ils lui donneront la palme de la justice, et celui qu’ils reconnaîtront pour impie, ils le condamneront d’impiété.

And if there should be a dispute between men, and they should come forward to judgment, and [the judges] judge, and justify the righteous, and condemn the wicked:

2 Que s’ils jugent celui qui a péché, digne de coups, ils le renverseront, et le feront battre devant eux. C’est selon la mesure du péché, que sera la mesure des coups;

then it shall come to pass, if the unrighteous should be worthy of stripes, you shall lay him down before the judges, and they shall scourge him before them according to his iniquity.

3 En sorte seulement, qu’elle n’excède pas le nombre de quarante, de peur que ton frère ne s’en aille ayant été horriblement déchiré devant tes yeux.

And they shall scourge him with forty stripes in number, they shall not inflict more; for if you should scourge him [with] more stripes beyond these stripes, your brother will be disgraced before you.

4 Tu ne lieras point la bouche d’un bœuf qui foule tes grains dans l’aire.

You shall not muzzle the ox that treads out the corn.

5 Quand deux frères habitent ensemble, et que l’un d’eux meurt sans enfants, que la femme du défunt n’en épouse point un autre; mais le frère de son mari la prendra, et il suscitera des enfants à son frère;

And if brethren should live together, and one of them should die, and should not have seed, the wife of the deceased shall not marry out [of the family] to a man not related: her husband's brother shall go in to her, and shall take her to himself for a wife, and shall dwell with her.

6 Et il appellera le fils premier-né d’elle du nom de son frère, afin que le nom de son frère ne soit pas effacé d’Israël.

And it shall come to pass that the child which she shall bear, shall be named by the name of the deceased, and his name shall not be blotted out of Israel.

7 Mais s’il ne veut pas prendre la femme de son frère qui lui est due en vertu de la loi, cette femme ira à la porte de la ville, elle s’adressera aux anciens et dira: Le frère de mon mari ne veut pas ressusciter le nom de son frère en Israël, ni me prendre pour femme.

And if the man should not be willing to take his brother's wife, then shall the woman go up to the gate to the elders, and she shall say, My husband's brother will not raise up the name of his brother in Israel, my husband's brother has refused.

8 Et aussitôt ils le feront appeler, et ils l’interrogeront. S’il répond: Je ne veux pas la prendre pour femme,

And the elders of his city shall call him, and speak to him; and if he stand and say, I will not take her:

9 La femme s’approchera de lui devant les anciens, et lui ôtera la chaussure de son pied, elle crachera sur sa face, et dira: C’est ainsi qu’il sera fait à l’homme qui n’édifie pas la maison de son frère.

then his brother's wife shall come forward before the elders, and shall loose one shoe from off his foot, and shall spit in his face, and shall answer and say, Thus shall they do to the man who will not build his brother's house in Israel.

10 Et il sera appelé en Israël du nom de Maison du déchaussé.

And his name shall be called in Israel, The house of him that has had his shoe loosed.

11 Si deux hommes ont une dispute entre eux, et que l’un commence à quereller l’autre, et que la femme de l’un voulant arracher son mari de la main du plus fort, étende la main et saisisse ses parties secrètes,

And if men should strive together, a man with his brother, and the wife of one of them should advance to rescue her husband out of the hand of him that smites him, and she should stretch forth her hand, and take hold of his private parts;

12 Tu couperas sa main, et tu ne te laisseras fléchir par aucune compassion pour elle.

you shall cut off her hand; your eye shall not spare her.

13 Tu n’auras point dans ton sachet deux poids, l’un plus gros et l’autre plus petit;

You shall not have in your bag various weights, a great and a small.

14 Et il n’y aura point dans ta maison un boisseau plus grand et un plus petit.

You shall not have in your house various measures, a great and a small.

15 Tu auras un poids juste et véritable, et il y aura chez toi un boisseau égal et véritable, afin que tu vives longtemps sur la terre que le Seigneur ton Dieu t’aura donnée;

You shall have a true and just weight, and a true and just measure, that you may live long upon the land which the Lord your God gives you for an inheritance.

16 Car le Seigneur ton Dieu a en abomination celui qui fait ces choses, et il déteste toute injustice.

For every one that does this [is] an abomination to the Lord your God, even every one that does injustice.

17 Souviens-toi de ce que t’a fait Amalec dans le chemin, quand tu sortais de l’Egypte.

Remember what things Amalec did to you by the way, when you went forth out of the land of Egypt:

18 Comment il marcha contre toi, et tailla en pièces les derniers de ton armée, qui, fatigués, s’étaient arrêtés, quand toi-même tu étais épuisé de faim et de fatigue, et il ne craignit pas Dieu.

how he withstood you in the way, and harassed your rear, [even] those that were weary behind you, and you did hunger and was weary; and he did not fear God.

19 Lors donc que le Seigneur ton Dieu t’aura donné le repos, et qu’il t’aura assujetti toutes les nations d’alentour, dans la terre qu’il t’a promise, tu effaceras son nom de dessous le ciel. Prends garde que tu ne l’oublies.

And it shall come to pass whenever the Lord your God shall have given you rest from all your enemies round about you, in the land which the Lord your God gives you to inherit, you shall blot out the name of Amalec from under heaven, and shall not forget [to do it].
