1 Timothée 3
1 Voici une vérité certaine: Si quelqu’un désire l’épiscopat, il désire une œuvre bonne.
Faithful is the saying, If a man seeketh the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work.
2 L’évêque doit donc être irréprochable, n’avoir épousé qu’une seule femme, être sobre, prudent, grave, chaste, hospitalier, capable d’enseigner;
The bishop therefore must be without reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, soberminded, orderly, given to hospitality, apt to teach;
3 Non porté à boire et à frapper; mais modéré, ennemi des contestations, désintéressé, mais surtout
no brawler, no striker; but gentle, not contentious, no lover of money;
4 Gouvernant bien sa maison, tenant ses enfants soumis, en toute chasteté
one that ruleth well his own house, having [his] children in subjection with all gravity;
5 (Car si quelqu’un ne sait pas gouverner sa propre maison, comment gouvernera-t-il l’Eglise de Dieu?)
(but if a man knoweth not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)
6 Non néophyte, de peur qu’enflé d’orgueil, il ne tombe dans la condamnation du diable.
not a novice, lest being puffed up he fall into the condemnation of the devil.
7 Il faut aussi qu’il ait un bon témoignage de ceux qui sont dehors, afin qu’il ne tombe pas dans l’opprobre et dans les filets du diable.
Moreover he must have good testimony from them that are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.
8 Que les diacres, de même, soient pudiques, qu’ils n’aient pas deux langues; qu’ils ne soient pas adonnés au vin, qu’ils ne courent pas après un gain sordide;
Deacons in like manner [must be] grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre;
9 Qu’ils conservent le mystère de la foi dans une conscience pure.
holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience.
10 Et qu’eux aussi soient d’abord éprouvés; et qu’ensuite ils exercent le ministère s’ils sont sans reproche.
And let these also first be proved; then let them serve as deacons, if they be blameless.
11 Que pareillement les femmes soient pudiques, non médisantes, mais sobres, fidèles en toutes choses.
Women in like manner [must be] grave, not slanderers, temperate, faithful in all things.
12 Que les diacres n’aient épousé qu’une seule femme; qu’ils gouvernent bien leurs enfants et leurs propres maisons.
Let deacons be husbands of one wife, ruling [their] children and their own houses well.
13 Car ceux qui auront bien rempli leur ministère, acquerront un rang honorable et une grande confiance dans la foi qui est dans le Christ Jésus.
For they that have served well as deacons gain to themselves a good standing, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.
14 Je t’écris ces choses, quoique j’espère aller bientôt te voir;
These things write I unto thee, hoping to come unto thee shortly;
15 Afin que, si je tarde, tu saches comment te conduire dans la maison de Dieu, qui est l’Eglise du Dieu vivant, la colonne et le fondement de la vérité.
but if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how men ought to behave themselves in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.
16 Et il est manifestement grand ce mystère de piété, qui s’est révélé dans la chair, qui a été justifié par l’Esprit, dévoilé aux anges, annoncé aux nations, cru dans le monde, reçu dans la gloire.
And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness; He who was manifested in the flesh, justified in the spirit, seen of angels, preached among the nations, believed on in the world, received up in glory.
