Proverbes 20
1 Le vin est moqueur, la cervoise tumultueuse; qui par eux se laisse étourdir, n'est pas sage.
Wine is a scorner, strong drink is raging; and whoso erreth thereby is not wise.
2 Tel le rugissement d'un lion, telle est l'épouvante que répand un roi. Qui s'emporte contre lui, pèche contre soi.
The terror of a king is as the roaring of a lion: he that provoketh him to anger sinneth against his own soul.
3 C'est une gloire pour l'homme de cesser une querelle: mais tout insensé s'exaspère.
It is an honour for a man to cease from strife; but every fool rusheth into it.
4 Parce qu'il fait froid, le paresseux ne laboure pas; à la moisson il mendiera, et n'obtiendra rien.
The sluggard will not plough by reason of the winter; he shall beg in harvest, and have nothing.
5 Le projet dans le cœur de l'homme est sous une eau profonde; mais l'intelligent va l'y puiser.
Counsel in the heart of man is deep water, and a man of understanding draweth it out.
6 Plusieurs hommes proclament chacun leur bonté; mais un homme fidèle, qui le trouvera?
Most men will proclaim every one his own kindness; but a faithful man who shall find?
7 Le juste marche dans son innocence; heureux les enfants qu'il laisse!
The righteous walketh in his integrity: blessed are his children after him!
8 Le roi qui siège sur son tribunal, par son regard met tout mal en fuite.
A king sitting on the throne of judgment scattereth away all evil with his eyes.
9 Qui dira: J'ai gardé mon cœur pur, et de péché je ne me suis point souillé?
Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin?
10 Double poids, double mesure, sont l'un et l'autre l'abomination de l'Éternel.
Divers weights, divers measures, even both of them are abomination to Jehovah.
11 Déjà dans ce qu'il fait, l'enfant montre ce qu'il est, si sa conduite sera pure et droite.
Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right.
12 L'oreille qui entend, et l'œil qui voit, par l'Éternel furent formés l'un et l'autre.
The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, Jehovah hath made even both of them.
13 N'aime pas le dormir, afin de ne pas perdre ce que tu as! Aie les yeux ouverts, et tu auras abondance de pain!
Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty; open thine eyes, [and] thou shalt be satisfied with bread.
14 Mauvais! mauvais! dit l'acheteur; mais en s'en allant il se félicite.
Bad! bad! saith the buyer; but when he is gone his way, then he boasteth.
15 Il y a de l'or et beaucoup de perles; mais des lèvres sensées sont une vaisselle de prix.
There is gold, and a multitude of rubies; but the lips of knowledge are a precious Jewel.
16 Prends-lui son manteau, car il a cautionné autrui; et nantis-loi de lui plutôt que de l'étranger.
Take his garment that is become surety [for] another, and hold him in pledge for strangers.
17 Le pain du mensonge est doux à l'homme; mais sa bouche finit par se trouver pleine de gravier.
Bread of falsehood is sweet to a man, but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel.
18 C'est la réflexion qui donne à un plan de la consistance; et sans circonspection ne fais point la guerre.
Plans are established by counsel; and with good advice make war.
19 Il révèle les secrets celui qui va médisant; et de celui qui tient ses lèvres ouvertes, ne fais pas ta société.
He that goeth about talebearing revealeth secrets; therefore meddle not with him that openeth his lips.
20 De quiconque maudit son père et sa mère, le flambeau s'éteint au sein des ténèbres.
Whoso curseth his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in the blackest darkness.
21 Un héritage abominable à son origine ne finira point par être béni.
An inheritance obtained hastily at the beginning will not be blessed in the end.
22 Ne dis pas: Je rendrai le mal pour le mal! Compte sur l'Éternel, c'est lui qui t'aidera.
Say not, I will recompense evil: wait on Jehovah, and he shall save thee.
23 Le double poids est l'abomination de l'Éternel; et la balance fausse n'est pas une chose bonne.
Divers weights are an abomination unto Jehovah; and a false balance is not good.
24 C'est l'Éternel qui règle la marche des humains; l'homme! comment découvrirait-il sa voie?
The steps of a man are from Jehovah; and how can a man understand his own way?
25 Il y a péril pour l'homme à précipiter les choses saintes, et à ne réfléchir qu'après le vœu prononcé.
It is a snare to a man rashly to say, It is hallowed, and after vows to make inquiry.
26 Un roi sage fait avec le van le triage des méchants, et fait passer sur eux la roue qui foule le blé.
A wise king scattereth the wicked, and bringeth the wheel over them.
27 Un flambeau allumé par l'Éternel, telle est l'âme de l'homme, qui sonde les profondeurs de son intérieur.
Man's spirit is the lamp of Jehovah, searching all the inner parts of the belly.
28 L'amour et la fidélité sont la garde du roi, et par l'amour il donne un étai à son trône.
Mercy and truth preserve the king; and he upholdeth his throne by mercy.
29 La parure des jeunes hommes, c'est leur vigueur; et la gloire des vieillards, leurs cheveux blancs.
The glory of young men is their strength; and the beauty of old men is the grey head.
30 Les meurtrissures purifient le méchant, les coups qui pénètrent au fond des entrailles.
Wounding stripes purge away evil, and strokes [purge] the inner parts of the belly.
