1 Et l'Éternel parla à Moïse en ces termes:
And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:
2 Parle aux enfants d'Israël et fais-toi donner par eux une houlette pour chaque maison patriarcale, par tous leurs Princes pour leurs maisons patriarcales, douze houlettes;
“Speak to the sons of Israel, and receive from each of them a rod by their kinships, from all the leaders of the tribes, twelve rods, and write the name of each one on his rod.
3 et tu inscriras le nom de chacun d'eux sur sa houlette. Et tu inscriras le nom d'Aaron sur la houlette de Lévi; car il y aura une houlette par chef de maison patriarcale.
But the name of Aaron shall be for the tribe of Levi, and one rod separately shall contain all their families.
4 Et tu les déposeras dans la Tente du Rendez-vous devant le Témoignage où je me rencontre avec vous.
And you shall place these in the tabernacle of the covenant before the testimony, where I will speak to you.
5 Et la houlette de l'homme que je choisirai, végétera; et ainsi, je ferai cesser devant moi les murmures que les enfants d'Israël élèvent contre vous.
Whomever of these I will choose, his rod will germinate, and so shall I restrain the complaints of the sons of Israel before me, by which they murmur against you.”
6 Et Moïse parla aux enfants d'Israël, et tous leurs Princes lui donnèrent une houlette par Prince de leurs maisons patriarcales; douze houlettes, et la houlette d'Aaron était dans le nombre.
And Moses spoke to the sons of Israel. And all the leaders gave him rods, one for each tribe. And there were twelve rods, aside from the rod of Aaron.
7 Et Moïse déposa les houlettes devant l'Éternel dans la Tente du Témoignage.
And when Moses had placed these before the Lord, in the tabernacle of the testimony,
8 Et le lendemain, comme Moïse entrait dans la Tente du Témoignage, voilà que la houlette d'Aaron de la Tribu de Lévi avait végété et poussé des jets, et épanoui des fleurs et mûri des amandes.
returning on the following day, he found that the rod of Aaron for the house of Levi, had germinated, and that the swelling buds had opened into flowers, which, spreading their petals, were formed into those of an almond tree.
9 Et Moïse enleva toutes les houlettes de devant l'Éternel et les porta vers tous les enfants d'Israël qui les virent et prirent chacun sa houlette.
Therefore, Moses brought out all the rods, from the sight of the Lord, to all the sons of Israel. And they saw, and each one received their rods.
10 Et l'Éternel dit à Moïse: Reporte la houlette d'Aaron devant le Témoignage pour y être conservée comme un monument pour les réfractaires, afin que tu fasses cesser devant moi leurs murmures et qu'ils ne meurent point.
And the Lord said to Moses: “Carry back the rod of Aaron into the tabernacle of the testimony, so that it may be kept there as a sign of the rebellion of the sons of Israel, and so that their complaints may be quieted before me, lest they die.”
11 Et ainsi fit Moïse: il se conforma à l'ordre de l'Éternel.
And Moses did just as the Lord had instructed.
12 Et les enfants d'Israël dirent à Moïse: Voici, nous expirons, nous périssons tous, nous périssons!
Then the sons of Israel said to Moses: “Behold, we have been consumed; we have been ruined.
13 quiconque s'approche de la Résidence de l'Éternel, meurt; devons-nous expirer jusqu'au dernier?
Whoever approaches to the tabernacle of the Lord dies. Will we all be wiped away, even to total annihilation?”
