Josué 23

1 Et un long temps s'étant écoulé, après que l'Éternel eut donné le repos à Israël vis-à-vis de tous ses ennemis à la ronde, et lorsque Josué fut devenu vieux et avancé en âge, Josué

And it came to pass after many days, after the Lord had given rest unto Israel from all their enemies round about, and Joshua had grown old and was well stricken in age,

2 convoqua tout Israël, ses Anciens et ses Chefs et ses Juges et ses Officiers, et il leur dit: Je suis vieux et avancé en âge.

That Joshua called for all Israel, for their elders, and for their heads, and for their judges, and for their officers, and said unto them, I am become old and well stricken in age;

3 Et vous avez vu tout ce que l'Éternel, votre Dieu, a fait à tous ces peuples devant vous. Car l'Éternel, votre Dieu, lui-même, a combattu pour vous.

And ye have yourselves seen all that the Lord your God hath done unto all these nations, because of you; for the Lord your God it is that hath fought for you.

4 Voyez, je vous ai fait échoir en propriété pour vos Tribus ces peuples qui ont survécu, depuis le Jourdain, et tous les peuples que j'ai exterminés jusqu'à la Grande Mer, où le soleil se couche.

Behold, I have divided unto you by lot those nations that yet remain, to be an inheritance according to your tribes, from the Jordan, with all the nations that I have cut off, as far as the great sea, toward the setting of the sun.

5 Et l'Éternel, votre Dieu, lui-même, leur donnera la chasse devant vous et les dépossédera devant vous, et vous vous emparerez de leur pays, comme l'Éternel, votre Dieu, vous l'a promis.

And the Lord your God will indeed expel them from before you, and drive them out from before you; and ye shall possess their land, as the Lord your God hath spoken unto you.

6 Tenez ferme à l'observation et à la pratique de tout ce qui est écrit dans le livre de la loi de Moïse, sans vous écarter ni à droite ni à gauche,

But be ye very steadfast to keep and to do all that is written in the book of the law of Moses, so as not to turn aside therefrom to the right or to the left;

7 sans vous mêler à ces nations qui restent près de vous, et sans rappeler le nom de leurs dieux, et sans faire jurer par eux, et sans leur rendre ni culte, ni hommage;

So as not to come among these nations, those that are left remaining near you; and of the name of their gods shall ye not make mention, nor cause any to swear thereby, neither shall ye serve them, nor bow yourselves down unto them;

8 mais c'est à l'Éternel, votre Dieu, que vous vous attacherez, ainsi que vous l'avez fait jusqu'à ce jour.

But unto the Lord your God shall ye cleave, as ye have done unto this day.

9 Aussi bien l'Éternel a chassé devant vous de grandes et fortes nations, et personne ne vous a tenu tête jusqu'à ce jour.

And the Lord drove out from before you great and mighty nations; but as for you, no man hath been able to stand up before you unto this day.

10 Un seul d'entre vous en poursuit mille, parce que l'Éternel, votre Dieu, lui-même, combat pour vous, comme il vous l'a promis.

One man of you can chase a thousand; for the Lord your God it is that fighteth for you, as he hath spoken unto you.

11 Faites donc bien attention en vous-mêmes d'aimer l'Éternel, votre Dieu.

Take good heed therefore for your souls' sake, to love the Lord your God.

12 Car, si vous vous détournez et vous vous attachez au résidu de ces nations qui ont été laissées près de vous, et si vous contractez des mariages chez elles, et que vous vous mêliez à elles et elles à vous,

For if ye do in any wise turn back, and cleave unto the remnant of these nations, those that are left remaining near you, and make marriages with them, and come in among them, and they among you:

13 sachez bien que l'Éternel, votre Dieu, ne continuera pas à chasser ces nations devant vous, et elles seront pour vous un piège et un lacs et une verge pour vos flancs et des épines dans vos yeux, jusqu'à ce que vous soyez exterminés de ce beau pays que vous a donné l'Éternel, votre Dieu.

Know for a certainty that the Lord your God will no more drive out these nations from before you; but they shall be snares and traps unto you, and scourges in your sides, and stings in your eyes, until ye perish from off this good land which the Lord your God hath given you.

14 Et voici, je fournis maintenant la carrière de tout ce qui est de la terre. Reconnaissez donc de tout votre cœur et de toute votre âme qu'aucune des belles promesses que vous a faites l'Éternel, votre Dieu, n'est tombée: tout s'est accompli pour vous, pas un mot n'en est tombé.

And, behold, I am going this day the way of all the earth; and ye know with all your heart and with all your soul, that not one thing hath failed of all the good things which the Lord your God spoke concerning you: all are come to pass unto you, not one thing thereof hath failed.

15 Mais de même que se sont accomplies pour vous toutes les promesses que vous a faites l'Éternel, votre Dieu, de même l'Éternel accomplira sur vous toutes les menaces, jusqu'à ce qu'il vous ait exterminés de ce beau pays que l'Éternel, votre Dieu, vous a donné.

But it shall come to pass, that as every good thing is come upon you, which the Lord your God spoke unto you: so will the Lord bring upon you every evil thing, until he have destroyed you from off this good land which the Lord your God hath given unto you.

16 Dès que vous transgresserez l'alliance que l'Éternel, votre Dieu, vous a prescrite et dès que vous irez vous mettre au service d'autres dieux et les adorer, la colère de l'Éternel s'allumera contre vous, et vous serez bientôt exterminés du beau pays qu'il vous a donné.

When ye transgress the covenant of the Lord your God, which he hath commanded you, and go and serve other gods, and bow yourselves down to them: then will the anger of the Lord be kindled against you, and ye shall perish quickly from off the good land which he hath given unto you.
