1 Samuel 7

1 Alors vinrent des hommes de Kiriath-Jearim, et ils emmenèrent l'Arche de l'Éternel et l'introduisirent dans la maison d'Abinadab sur la colline, et ils consacrèrent son fils Eléazar pour garder l'Arche de l'Éternel.

And the men of Kirjath-Jearim come and bring up the Ark of YHWH, and bring it into the house of Abinadab, in the height, and they have sanctified his son Eleazar to keep the Ark of YHWH.

2 Et depuis le jour où l'Arche de l'Éternel séjourna dans Kiriath-Jearim, un long temps s'écoula; or ce fut vingt ans.

And it comes to pass, from the day of the dwelling of the Ark in Kirjath-Jearim, that the days are multiplied—indeed, they are twenty years—and all the house of Israel wails after YHWH.

3 Et toute la maison d'Israël allait se plaignant après l'Éternel. Samuel parla en ces termes à toute la maison d'Israël: Si c'est de tout votre cœur que vous revenez à l'Éternel, bannissez du milieu de vous les dieux de l'étranger et les Astartés, et dirigez votre cœur vers l'Éternel, et servez-le seul, et Il vous tirera des mains des Philistins.

And Samuel speaks to all the house of Israel, saying, “If you are turning back to YHWH with all your heart—turn aside the gods of the stranger from your midst, and Ashtaroth; and prepare your heart for YHWH, and serve Him only, and He delivers you out of the hand of the Philistines.”

4 Et les enfants d'Israël bannirent les Baals et les Astartés et servirent l'Éternel seul.

And the sons of Israel turn aside the Ba‘alim and Ashtaroth, and serve YHWH alone;

5 Et Samuel dit: Assemblez tous les Israélites à Mitspa, afin que j'intercède pour vous auprès de l'Éternel. Et ils s'assemblèrent à Mitspa,

and Samuel says, “Gather all Israel to Mizpeh, and I pray to YHWH for you.”

6 et ils puisèrent de l'eau et la répandirent devant l'Éternel, et ils jeûnèrent ce jour-là et dirent alors: Nous avons péché contre l'Éternel. Et Samuel fit à Mitspa, la censure des enfants d'Israël.

And they are gathered to Mizpeh, and draw water, and pour out before YHWH, and fast on that day, and say there, “We have sinned against YHWH”; and Samuel judges the sons of Israel in Mizpeh.

7 Et lorsque les Philistins apprirent que les enfants d'Israël s'étaient rassemblés à Mitspa, les Princes des Philistins s'avancèrent contre Israël; et à cette nouvelle les enfants d'Israël eurent peur des Philistins.

And the Philistines hear that the sons of Israel have gathered themselves to Mizpeh; and the princes of the Philistines go up against Israel, and the sons of Israel hear, and are afraid of the presence of the Philistines.

8 Et les enfants d'Israël dirent à Samuel: Ne néglige pas de supplier pour nous l'Éternel, notre Dieu, afin qu'il nous sauve des mains des Philistins.

And the sons of Israel say to Samuel, “Do not keep silent for us from crying to our God YHWH, and He saves us out of the hand of the Philistines.”

9 Alors Samuel prit un agneau de lait et l'offrit en holocauste parfait à l'Éternel, et Samuel supplia l'Éternel en faveur d'Israël, et l'Éternel l'exauça.

And Samuel takes a fat lamb, and causes it to go up—a whole burnt-offering to YHWH; and Samuel cries to YHWH for Israel, and YHWH answers him;

10 Et au moment même où Samuel offrait l'holocauste, les Philistins s'avancèrent à l'attaque d'Israël. Et dans cette journée l'Éternel fit tonner avec grand fracas son tonnerre sur les Philistins, et les mit en déroute, et ils furent battus par les Israélites.

and Samuel is causing the burnt-offering to go up—and the Philistines have drawn near to battle against Israel—and YHWH thunders with a great noise, on that day, on the Philistines, and troubles them, and they are struck before Israel.

11 Et les hommes d'Israël sortant de Mitspa poursuivirent les Philistins et les chargèrent jusqu'au-dessous de Bethcar.

And the men of Israel go out from Mizpeh, and pursue the Philistines, and strike them to the place of Beth-Car.

12 Alors Samuel prit une pierre et la plaça entre Mitspa et Sen, et l'appela du nom d'Ebenézer (pierre du secours) et dit: Jusqu'ici l'Éternel nous a secourus.

And Samuel takes a stone, and sets [it] between Mizpeh and Shen, and calls its name Eben-Ezer, saying, “Until now YHWH has helped us.”

13 Ainsi furent abaissés les Philistins qui ne firent plus d'incursions dans le territoire d'Israël, et la main de l'Éternel fut contraire aux Philistins durant toute la vie de Samuel.

And the Philistines are humbled, and have not added anymore to come into the border of Israel, and the hand of YHWH is on the Philistines all the days of Samuel.

14 Et Israël recouvra les villes que les Philistins lui avaient enlevées, depuis Ekron à Gath, et dont il arracha aussi le territoire des mains des Philistins. Et il y eut paix entre Israël et les Amoréens.

And the cities which the Philistines have taken from Israel are restored to Israel—from Ekron even to Gath—and Israel has delivered their border out of the hand of the Philistines; and there is peace between Israel and the Amorite.

15 Et Samuel fut Juge d'Israël pendant toute sa vie.

And Samuel judges Israel all the days of his life,

16 Et chaque année Samuel allait en tournée à Béthel, à Guilgal et à Mitspa, et dans tous ces lieux il exerçait la judicature sur Israël.

and he has gone from year to year, and gone around Beth-El, and Gilgal, and Mizpeh, and judged Israel [in] all these places;

17 Et il revenait à Rama, car c'est là qu'était sa maison et là qu'il jugeait Israël; et il y éleva un autel à l'Éternel.

and his returning [is] to Ramath, for his house [is] there, and he has judged Israel there, and he builds an altar to YHWH there.
