1 Samuel 13
1 A son avènement Saül était âgé de… et il régna deux ans sur Israël.
Saul was thirty years old when he began to reign; when he had reigned forty years over Israel,
2 Et Saül se fit une élite de trois milles hommes d'Israël, et Saül en avait avec lui deux mille à Michmas et sur le mont de Béthel, et Jonathan en avait mille avec lui à Gibea de Benjamin, et il renvoya tout le reste de la troupe dans ses tentes.
he chose three thousand men of Israel. Two thousand were with him in Michmash and in the hill country of Bethel, while a thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin. The rest of the soldiers he sent home, each man to his tent.
3 Et Jonathan battit le poste des Philistins à Geba: les Philistins l'apprirent. Et Saül fit sonner de la trompette dans tout le pays pour dire: Que les Hébreux entendent!
Jonathan defeated the garrison of the Philistines that was at Geba and the Philistines heard of it. Then Saul blew the trumpet throughout all the land, saying, “Let the Hebrews hear.”
4 Et tous les Israélites entendirent qu'on disait: Saül a battu le poste des Philistins, et aussi Israël est en mauvaise odeur auprès des Philistins. Et le peuple fut cité à se mettre à la suite de Saül à Guilgal.
All Israel heard that Saul had defeated the garrison of the Philistines, and also that Israel had become a rotten smell to the Philistines. Then the soldiers were summoned together to join Saul at Gilgal.
5 Cependant les Philistins se rassemblèrent pour entrer en guerre avec Israël, avec mille chars et six mille hommes de cavalerie et une infanterie égale au sable qui est sur le bord de la mer; et ils s'avancèrent et campèrent à Michmas à l'orient de Beth-Aven.
The Philistines gathered together to fight against Israel, with three thousand chariots, six thousand men to drive the chariots, and troops as numerous as the sand on the seashore. They came up and encamped at Michmash, east of Beth Aven.
6 Et les Israélites se voyant serrés de près par la troupe qui approchait, se cachèrent dans les cavernes et dans les buissons et dans les gorges et dans les tours et dans les citernes.
When the men of Israel saw that they were in trouble—for the people were distressed, the people hid in caves, in the underbrush, in rocks, in wells, and in pits.
7 Et des Hébreux passant le Jourdain gagnèrent la contrée de Gad et de Galaad. Or Saül était encore à Guilgal, et tout le peuple tremblait derrière lui.
Some of the Hebrews went over the Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead. But Saul was still at Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling.
8 Et il attendit sept jours jusqu'au terme fixé par Samuel; mais Samuel n'arrivant pas à Guilgal, la troupe se débanda et le quittait.
He waited seven days, the time Samuel had set. But Samuel did not come to Gilgal, and the people were scattering from Saul.
9 Alors Saül dit: Amenez-moi l'holocauste et les oblations pacifiques! Et il offrit l'holocauste.
Saul said, “Bring me the burnt offering and the peace offerings.” Then he offered the burnt offering.
10 Et comme il avait achevé le sacrifice de l'holocauste, voilà que Samuel arriva, et Saül sortit au-devant de lui pour le saluer.
As soon as he finished offering the burnt offering Samuel arrived. Saul went out to meet him and to greet him.
11 Et Samuel dit: Qu'as-tu fait? Et Saül dit: Voyant que la troupe se débandait et me quittait, et que tu ne venais pas au terme fixé, et que les Philistins étaient réunis à Michmas,
Then Samuel said, “What have you done?” Saul replied, “When I saw that the people were leaving me, and that you did not come within the set time, and that the Philistines had assembled at Michmash,
12 j'ai dit: Les Philistins vont faire une descente sur moi à Guilgal, et je ne me suis pas encore rendu l'Éternel favorable; et j'ai pris sur moi d'offrir l'holocauste.
I said, 'Now the Philistines will come down against me at Gilgal, and I have not sought the favor of Yahweh.' So I forced myself to offer the burnt offering.”
13 Alors Samuel dit à Saül: Tu as agi follement; tu n'as pas observé l'ordre de l'Éternel, ton Dieu, tel qu'Il te l'avait prescrit; car maintenant l'Éternel aurait confirmé ta royauté sur Israël pour l'éternité; mais maintenant ta royauté ne subsistera pas.
Then Samuel said to Saul, “You have acted foolishly. You have not kept the command of Yahweh your God that he gave you. For then Yahweh would have established your rule over Israel forever.
14 L'Éternel s'est cherché un homme selon son cœur et l'Éternel l'a constitué prince de son peuple, parce que tu n'as pas observé ce que l'Éternel t'avait commandé.
But now your rule will not continue. Yahweh has sought out a man after his own heart, and Yahweh has appointed him to be prince over his people, because you have not obeyed what he commanded you.”
15 Là-dessus Samuel se leva, et de Guilgal monta à Gibea de Benjamin. Saül fit passer à la revue la troupe qui se trouvait avec lui et était d'environ six cents hommes.
Then Samuel arose and went up from Gilgal to Gibeah of Benjamin. Then Saul numbered the people who were present with him, about six hundred men.
16 Or Saül et et Jonathan, son fils, avec la troupe qui se trouvaient avec eux, avaient pris position à Gibea de Benjamin, et les Philistins campaient à Michmas.
Saul, his son Jonathan, and the people who were present with them, stayed in Geba of Benjamin. But the Philistines camped at Michmash.
17 Et les fourrageurs sortirent du camp des Philistins en trois corps, dont le premier se porta sur la route d'Ophra dans la contrée de Sual;
Raiders came from the camp of the Philistines in three groups. One group turned toward Ophrah, to the land of Shual.
18 et l'autre corps se porta sur la route de Bethoron, et le troisième sur la route de la frontière en saillie au-dessus de la vallée de Tesboïm du côté du désert.
Another group turned toward Beth Horon, and another group turned toward the border that overlooks the Valley of Zeboyim toward the wilderness.
19 Cependant il ne se serait pas trouvé de forgeron dans tout le pays d'Israël, car les Philistins avaient dit: Il ne faut pas que les Hébreux se fabriquent ni épée ni javelot;
No blacksmith could be found throughout all of Israel, because the Philistines said, “Otherwise the Hebrews would make swords or spears for themselves.”
20 et tous les Israélites descendaient chez les Philistins pour aiguiser chacun sa charrue, et son hoyau et sa bêche,
But all the men of Israel used to go down to the Philistines, each to sharpen his plow points, his mattock, his ax, and his sickle.
21 quand le tranchant des bêches et des hoyaux et des tridents et des haches était ébréché, et pour redresser les aiguillons.
The charge was two-thirds of a shekel for the plow points, and the mattocks, and one-third of a shekel for sharpening axes and for straightening the goads.
22 Et quand vint le jour du combat, il ne se trouvait ni épée ni javelot entre les mains de toute la troupe qui était avec Saül et Jonathan; il ne s'en trouvait que chez Saül et Jonathan, son fils.
So on the day of battle, there were no swords or spears found in the hands of any of the soldiers who were with Saul and Jonathan; only Saul and his son Jonathan had them.
23 Et un détachement de Philistins se porta au Pas-de-Michmas.
The garrison of the Philistines went out to the pass of Michmash.
