Josué 9

1 Lorsque ces nouvelles parvinrent aux rois des Amorrhéens de la rive droite du fleuve, à ceux de la montagne, à ceux du plat pays, à ceux de la côte de la grande mer, à ceux qui avoisinent l'Anti-Liban et aux Hettéens, aux Chananéens, aux Phérézéens, aux Evéens, aux Amorrhéens, aux Gergéeens et aux Jébuséens,

And when the kings of the Amorites on the other side of Jordan, who were in the mountain country, and in the plain, and in all the coast of the great sea, and those who were near Antilibanus, and the Chettites, and the Chananites, and the Pherezites, and the Evites, and the Amorites, and the Gergesites, and the Jebusites, heard [of it],

2 Ils se réunirent à la fois pour combattre Josué et Israël.

they came all together at the same time to make war against Joshua and Israel.

3 En ce temps-là, les habitants de Gabaon ouïrent ce que le Seigneur avait fait de Jéricho et d'Haï.

And the inhabitants of Gabaon heard of all that the Lord did to Jericho and Gai.

4 Eux aussi usèrent d'artifice; ils se pourvurent de vivres, se tinrent prêts et partirent, ayant lié sur leurs épaules de vieux sacs, de vieilles outres de vin déchirées.

And they also wrought craftily, and they went and made provision and prepared themselves; and having taken old sacks on their shoulders, and old and rent and patched bottles of wine,

5 Le tour de leurs chaussures ainsi que leurs sandales étaient usés et rapiécés; leurs vêtements montraient la corde, et le pain de leur approvisionnement était desséché, moisi, rongé.

and the upper part of their shoes and their sandals old and clouted on their feet, and their garments old upon them—and the bread of their provision was dry and mouldy and corrupt.

6 Ils vinrent ainsi auprès de Josué, au camp d'Israël en Galgala, et ils dirent à Josué et à Israël: Nous arrivons d'une contrée lointaine, et maintenant faites avec nous une alliance.

And they came to Joshua into the camp of Israel to Galgala, and said to Joshua and Israel, We are come from a far land: now then make a covenant with us.

7 Aussitôt, les fils d'Israël dirent à l'Horréen: Prenez garde; n'habitez- vous pas notre territoire? En ce cas, comment pourrions-nous faire alliance avec vous?

And the children of Israel said to the Chorrhaean, Peradventure thou dwellest amongst us; and how should I make a covenant with thee?

8 Mais ils répondirent à Josué: Nous sommes tes esclaves. Et Josué leur dit: D'ou êtes-vous? et d'ou venez-vous?

And they said to Joshua, We are thy servants: and Joshua said to them, Whence are ye, and whence have ye come?

9 Ils reprirent: Tes esclaves arrivent d'une contrée très-lointaine, au nom du Seigneur ton Dieu; car nous avons ouï son nom, nous avons appris tout ce qu'il a fait en Egypte,

And they said, Thy servants are come from a very far country in the name of the Lord thy God: for we have heard his name, and all that he did in Egypt,

10 Et comment il a traité les rois des Amorrhéens qui étaient au delà du fleuve: Séhon, roi des Amorrhéens, et Og, roi de Basan, qui demeurait en Astaroth et en Edraïn.

and all that he did to the kings of the Amorites, who were beyond Jordan, to Seon king of the Amorites, and Og king of Basan, who dwelt in Astaroth and in Edrain.

11 A ces nouvelles, nos anciens et tous ceux qui habitent notre contrée nous ont dit: Prenez avec vous des vivres pour la route, allez à leur rencontre, et dites-leur: Nous sommes vos esclaves, et maintenant faites avec nous une alliance.

And our elders and all that inhabit our land when they heard spoke to us, saying, Take to yourselves provision for the way, and go to meet them; and ye shall say to them, We are thy servants, and now make a covenant with us.

12 Voici nos pains qui étaient chauds quand nous nous en sommes approvisionnés, le jour où nous sommes partis pour venir près de vous; ils sont maintenant desséchés et rongés.

These [are] the loaves—we took them hot for our journey on the day on which we came out to come to you; and now they are dried and become mouldy.

13 Et ces outres de vin que nous avons remplies neuves, vous les voyez déchirées; cependant, nos vêtements et nos chaussures se sont usés durant notre bien long voyage.

And these [are] the skins of wine which we filled when new, and they are rent; and our garments and our shoes are worn out because of the very long journey.

14 Alors, les chefs d'Israël prirent de ces provisions, et ils n'interrogèrent point le Seigneur.

And the chiefs took of their provision, and asked not [counsel of] the Lord.

15 Josué leur accorda donc la paix; il fit avec eux une alliance qui les préserva de tout dommage, et les chefs de la synagogue leur prêtèrent serment.

And Joshua made peace with them, and they made a covenant with them to preserve them; and the princes of the congregation sware to them.

16 Trois jours après la conclusion de l'alliance, on leur apprit que c'étaient des voisins, et qu'ils habitaient leur territoire.

And it came to pass three days after they had made a covenant with them, they heard that they were near neighbours, and that they dwelt among them.

17 Ensuite, les fils d'Israël levèrent leur camp, et eux allèrent à leurs villes; or, leurs villes étaient Gabaon, Caphira, Beroth et Cariathiarim.

And the children of Israel departed and came to their cities; and their cities [were] Gabaon, and Kephira, and Berot, and the cities of Jarin.

18 Mais les fils d'Israël ne les combattirent point, parce que tous les chefs leur avaient prêté serment, au nom du Seigneur Dieu d'Israël. Et tout le peuple se prit à murmurer contre les chefs.

Land the children of Israel fought not with them, because all the princes sware to them by the Lord God of Israel; and all the congregation murmured at the princes.

19 Et les chefs dirent à tout le peuple: Nous leur avons prêté serment au nom du Seigneur Dieu d'Israël, et maintenant nous ne pouvons les toucher.

And the princes said to all the congregation: We have sworn to them by the Lord God of Israel, and now we shall not be able to touch them.

20 Voici ce que nous ferons: accordons-leur la vie et réservons-les, et il n'y aura point contre nous de colère, à cause du serment que nous leur avons prêté.

This we will do; take them alive, and we will preserve them: so there shall not be wrath against us by reason of the oath which we swore to them.

21 Ils vivront et ils seront les fendeurs de bois, les porteurs d'eau de toute la synagogue, comme les chefs le leur ont dit.

They shall live, and shall be hewers of wood and drawers of water to all the congregation, as the princes said to them.

22 Et Josué, les ayant appelés auprès de lui, leur dit: Pourquoi m'avez-vous trompé, disant: Nous sommes très-éloignés de toi; tandis que vous êtes de ceux qui habitent le territoire qui nous appartient?

And Joshua called them together and said to them, Why have ye deceived me, saying, We live very far from you; whereas ye are fellow-countrymen of those who dwell among us?

23 Maintenant, vous voici nappés de malédiction; jamais vous ne cesserez d'être esclaves, fendeurs de bois, porteurs d'eau à mon service et au service de mon Dieu.

And now ye are cursed: there shall not fail of you a slave, or a hewer of wood, or a drawer of water to me and my God.

24 Et ils répondirent à Josué, disant: On nous a rapporté que le Seigneur ton Dieu a prescrit à Moïse, son serviteur, de prendre possession de cette terre et d'exterminer devant vous, nous et tous ceux qui l'habitent; à votre approche, nous avons donc été remplis de crainte pour notre vie, et nous avons fait cette chose.

And they answered Joshua, saying, It was reported to us what the Lord thy God charged his servant Moses, to give you this land, and to destroy us and all that dwelt on it from before you; and we feared very much for our lives because of you, and [therefore] we did this thing.

25 Maintenant, voilà que nous sommes en vos mains; faites de nous ce qui vous sera agréable, ce que vous jugerez à propos.

And now, behold, we [are] in your power; do to us as it is pleasing to you, and as it seems [good] to you.

26 Or, voilà ce qu'on fit à leur égard: ce jour-là même, Josué les retira des mains des fils d'Israël, et ceux-ci ne les tuèrent point;

And they did so to them; and Joshua rescued them in that day out of the hands of the children of Israel, and they did not slay them.

27 Et ce jour-là même, Josué en fit des fendeurs de bois, des porteurs d'eau pour tout le peuple, et pour l'autel du Seigneur. A cause de cela, les Gabaonites devinrent fendeurs de bois et porteurs d'eau pour l'autel du Seigneur; ils le sont encore de nos jours, et ils doivent servir au lieu qu'aura choisi le Seigneur.

And Joshua made them in that day hewers of wood and drawers of water to the whole congregation, and for the altar of God: therefore the inhabitants of Gabaon became hewers of wood and drawers of water for the altar of God until this day, even for the place which the Lord should choose.
