1 L’Éternel parla ainsi à Moïse:
And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:
2 "Annonce aux enfants d’Israël que tu dois recevoir d’eux une verge respectivement par famille paternelle, de la part de tous leurs chefs de familles paternelles, ensemble douze verges; le nom de chacun, tu l’écriras sur sa verge.
Speak to the children of Israel, and take of every one of them a rod by their kindreds, of all the princes of the tribes, twelve rods, and write the name of every man upon his rod.
3 Et le nom d’Aaron, tu l’écriras sur la verge de Lévi, car il faut une seule verge par chef de famille paternelle.
And the name of Aaron shall be for the tribe of Levi, and one rod shall contain all their families:
4 Tu les déposeras dans la tente d’assignation, devant le statut où je vous donne habituellement rendez-vous.
And thou shalt lay them up in the tabernacle of the covenant before the testimony, where I will speak to thee.
5 Or, l’homme que j’aurai élu, sa verge fleurira, et ainsi mettrai-je fin à ces murmures contre moi, que les enfants d’Israël profèrent à cause de vous."
Whomsoever of these I shall choose, his rod shall blossom: and I will make to cease from me the murmurings of the children of Israel, wherewith they murmur against you.
6 Moïse parla aux enfants d’Israël; et tous leurs phylarques lui remirent chacun une verge, selon leurs familles paternelles, ensemble douze verges; et la verge d’Aaron fut jointe aux leurs.
And Moses spoke to the children of Israel: and all the princes gave him rods one for every tribe: and there were twelve rods besides the rod of Aaron.
7 Moïse déposa ces verges devant le Seigneur, dans la tente du statut.
And when Moses had laid them up before the Lord in the tabernacle of the testimony:
8 Or, le lendemain, Moïse entra dans la tente du statut, et voici qu’avait fleuri la verge d’Aaron, déposée pour la famille de Lévi: il y avait germé des boutons, éclos des fleurs, mûri des amandes.
He returned on the following day, and found that the rod of Aaron for the house of Levi, was budded: and that the buds swelling it had bloomed blossoms, which spreading the leaves, were formed into almonds.
9 Moïse retira toutes les verges de devant le Seigneur et les exposa devant les enfants d’Israël: ils les regardèrent, et reprirent chacun la sienne.
Moses therefore brought out all the rods from before the Lord to all the children of Israel: and they saw, and every one received their rods.
10 Et l’Éternel dit à Moïse: "Replace la verge d’Aaron devant le statut, comme signe durable à l’encontre des rebelles; tu feras cesser par là leurs murmures contre moi, et ils ne mourront point."
And the Lord said to Moses: Carry back the rod of Aaron into the tabernacle of the testimony, that it may be kept there for a token of the rebellious children of Israel, and that their complaints may cease from me lest they die.
11 Moïse obéit: comme l’Éternel lui avait ordonné, ainsi fit-il.
And Moses did as the Lord had commanded.
12 Les enfants d’Israël parlèrent ainsi à Moïse: "Certes, c’est fait de nous, nous sommes perdus, tous perdus!
And the children of Israel said to Moses: Behold we are consumed, we all perish.
13 Quiconque s’approche tant soit peu de la résidence du Seigneur est frappé de mort: sommes-nous donc tous destinés à périr?"
Whosoever approacheth to the tabernacle of the Lord, he dieth. Are we all to a man to be utterly destroyed?
