Ézéchiel 18
1 La parole de l’Eternel me fut adressée en ces termes:
And the word of Jehovah came unto me, saying,
2 "Qu’avez-vous à colporter le dicton suivant, sur la terre d’Israël: "Les pères ont mangé du verjus et les dents des enfants en sont agacées"?
What mean ye, ye who use this proverb of the land of Israel, saying, [The] fathers eat sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge?
3 Par ma vie, dit le Seigneur Dieu, vous ne devrez plus citer ce dicton en Israël!
[As] I live, saith the Lord Jehovah, ye shall not have any more to use this proverb in Israel.
4 Oui, toutes les âmes sont à moi; l’âme du père comme l’âme du fils, elles sont à moi: l’âme pécheresse seule mourra.
Behold, all the souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.
5 Un homme qui se montre vertueux, qui pratique la justice et la vertu,
And if a man be righteous, and do judgment and justice:
6 qui ne mange pas sur les montagnes, et ne lève pas les yeux vers les idoles de la maison d’Israël, qui ne déshonore pas la femme de son prochain et ne s’approche pas d’une femme impure
— he hath not eaten upon the mountains, nor lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, neither hath defiled his neighbour's wife, nor come near to a woman in her separation,
7 qui ne fraude personne, qui restitue le gage de la dette, qui ne commet pas de vol, qui donne son pain à l’affamé et qui couvre d’un vêtement celui qui est nu,
and hath not oppressed any; he hath restored to the debtor his pledge, hath not exercised robbery, hath given his bread to the hungry, and covered the naked with a garment;
8 qui ne prête pas à usure et n’accepte pas de surcroît, qui écarte sa main de l’iniquité et exerce une justice loyale entre les hommes,
he hath not given forth upon usury, nor taken increase; he hath withdrawn his hand from unrighteousness, hath executed true judgment between man and man,
9 qui marche selon mes statuts et qui observe mes commandements pour agir avec loyauté, celui-là est un juste, il vivra à coup sûr, dit le Seigneur Dieu.
hath walked in my statutes, and kept mine ordinances, to deal faithfully: he is righteous, he shall certainly live, saith the Lord Jehovah.
10 Que (s’il engendre un fils violent, sanguinaire, et qui fasse à son frère une de ces choses,
And if he have begotten a son that is violent, a shedder of blood, and that doeth only one of any of these [things],
11 tandis que lui (son père) n’a rien fait de tout cela; un fils qui mange sur les montagnes et déshonore la femme de son prochain,
and that doeth not any of those [duties], but also hath eaten upon the mountains, and defiled his neighbour's wife,
12 qui exploite le pauvre et le nécessiteux, commet des vols, ne restitue pas le gage, et lève les yeux vers les idoles, fait des abominations,
hath oppressed the poor and needy, exercised robbery, hath not restored the pledge, and hath lifted up his eyes to the idols, committed abomination,
13 prête à intérêt et accepte le surcroit, il vivrait? II ne vivra pas, il a commis toutes ces infamies, il faut qu’il meure, son sang sera sur lui.
given forth upon usury, and taken increase; shall he then live? He shall not live: he hath done all these abominations; he shall certainly die; his blood shall be upon him.
14 Mais s’il a engendré un fils, lequel a vu tous les péchés que son père a commis; il les a vus et n’agit pas de même.
But lo, if he have begotten a son that seeth all his father's sins which he hath done, and considereth, and doeth not such like:
15 Il n’a pas mangé sur les montagnes, ni levé les yeux vers les idoles de la maison d’Israël, il n’a pas déshonoré la femme de son prochain.
— he hath not eaten upon the mountains, nor lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel; he hath not defiled his neighbour's wife,
16 Il n’a exploité personne, n’a pas retenu de gage, ni commis de vol, il a donné son pain à l’affamé et couvert d’un vêtement qui était nu.
and hath not oppressed any, nor withholden the pledge, neither hath exercised robbery; he hath given his bread to the hungry, and covered the naked with a garment;
17 Il a retenu sa main du pauvre, il n’a pas pris d’intérêt ni de surcroît, il a observé mes préceptes et suivi mes lois, lui, il ne mourra pas pour la faute de son père, mais il vivra.
he hath withdrawn his hand from the poor, hath not received usury nor increase, hath executed my judgments, [and] walked in my statutes: he shall not die for the iniquity of his father, he shall certainly live.
18 Quant à son père, qui a exercé des actes d’oppression, qui a volé son frère, et n’a pas bien agi au milieu de son peuple, voici qu’il meurt pour sa faute.
As for his father, because he practised oppression, exercised robbery upon his brother, and did what was not good among his people, behold, he shall die in his iniquity.
19 Et vous dites: Pourquoi le fils n’a-t-il pas supporté la faute du père? C’Est que le fils a pratiqué la justice et la vertu, il a observé toutes mes lois et les a pratiquées: il vivra.
And ye say, Why doth not the son bear the iniquity of the father? But the son hath done judgment and justice, hath kept all my statutes, and hath done them; he shall certainly live.
20 C’Est la personne qui pèche qui mourra: le fils ne portera pas la faute du père, ni le père la faute du fils; la justice du juste est imputable au juste, la méchanceté du méchant au méchant.
The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son; the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.
21 Mais si le méchant revient de toutes les fautes qu’il a commises, qu’il observe toutes mes lois, qu’il pratique le droit et la vertu, il vivra et ne mourra pas.
And the wicked, if he turn from all his sins which he hath committed, and keep all my statutes, and do judgment and justice, he shall certainly live, he shall not die.
22 Aucun des péchés qu’il a commis ne lui sera compté; grâce à la justice qu’il a pratiquée, il vivra.
None of his transgressions which he hath committed shall be remembered against him; in his righteousness which he hath done shall he live.
23 Est-ce que je souhaite la mort du méchant, dit le Seigneur Dieu, ne préféré-je pas qu’il revienne de sa conduite et qu’il vive?
Have I any pleasure at all in the death of the wicked? saith the Lord Jehovah; is it not in his turning from his way, that he may live?
24 Et si le juste renonce à sa vertu et commet l’iniquité, et s’il fait des abominations pareilles à celles qu’a faites le méchant, vivra-t-il? On ne lui tiendra compte d’aucune des vertus qu’il a pratiquées; pour l’infidélité qu’il a commise et les péchés qu’il a fait, il mourra.
And when the righteous turneth from his righteousness and practiseth what is wrong, [and] doeth according to all the abominations that the wicked doeth, shall he live? None of his righteous acts which he hath done shall be remembered: in his unfaithfulness which he hath wrought, and in his sin which he hath sinned, in them shall he die.
25 Et vous dites: La voie de l’Eternel n’est pas régulière! Ecoutez donc, maison d’Israël, est-ce ma voie qui n’est pas régulière? Ne sont-ce pas vos voies qui ne sont pas régulières?
And ye say, The way of the Lord is not equal. Hear then, house of Israel. Is not my way equal? are not your ways unequal?
26 Si le juste renonce à sa vertu et fait le mal, il en mourra; pour la faute qu’il a commise, il mourra.
When the righteous turneth away from his righteousness, and practiseth what is wrong, and dieth for it; in his wrong that he hath done shall he die.
27 Et si le méchant revient de sa méchanceté et qu’il pratique le droit et la vertu, il sauvera sa vie.
And when the wicked turneth from his wickedness which he hath committed, and doeth judgment and justice, he shall keep his soul alive.
28 Qu’il voie et revienne de tous les péchés qu’il a commis: il vivra et ne mourra pas.
Because he considereth, and turneth from all his transgressions which he hath committed, he shall certainly live, he shall not die.
29 La maison d’Israël dit: "La voie de l’Eternel n’est pas régulière!" Sont-ce mes voies qui ne sont pas régulières, maison d’Israël, ne sont-ce pas les vôtres?
But the house of Israel say, The way of the Lord is not equal. O house of Israel, are not my ways equal? Is it not your ways that are unequal?
30 C’Est pourquoi je vous jugerai chacun selon ses oeuvres, maison d’Israël, dit le Seigneur Dieu; revenez, détachez-vous de tous vos péchés, pour qu’il n’y ait plus pour vous d’occasion de faute.
Therefore I will judge you, house of Israel, every one according to his ways, saith the Lord Jehovah. Return ye, and turn from all your transgressions; so iniquity shall not be your snare.
31 Rejetez loin de vous tous les péchés que vous avez commis, faites-vous un coeur nouveau et une âme nouvelle, et pourquoi mourriez-vous, maison d’Israël?
Cast away from you all your transgressions wherewith ye have transgressed, and make you a new heart and a new spirit: why then will ye die, house of Israel?
32 Car je ne désire pas la mort de qui meurt, dit le Seigneur Dieu, revenez et vivez!
For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord Jehovah; therefore turn ye and live.
