Exode 3

1 Or, Moïse faisait paître les brebis de Jéthro son beau-père, prêtre de Madian. Il avait conduit le bétail au fond du désert et était parvenu à la montagne divine, au mont Horeb.

Now Moses fed the sheep of Jethro his father in law, the priest of Madian: and he drove the flock to the inner parts of the desert, and came to the mountain of God, Horeb.

2 Un ange du Seigneur lui apparut dans un jet de flamme au milieu d’un buisson. Il remarqua que le buisson était en feu et cependant ne se consumait point.

And the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he saw that the bush was on fire and was not burnt.

3 Moïse se dit: "Je veux m’approcher, je veux examiner ce grand phénomène: pourquoi le buisson ne se consume pas."

And Moses said: I will go and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt.

4 L’Éternel vit qu’il s’approchait pour regarder; alors Dieu l’appela du sein du buisson, disant: "Moïse! Moïse!" Et il répondit: "Me voici."

And when the Lord saw that he went forward to see, he called to him out of the midst of the bush, and said: Moses, Moses. And he answered: Here I am.

5 Il reprit: "N’Approche point d’ici! Ote ta chaussure, car l’endroit que tu foules est un sol sacré!"

And he said: Come not nigh hither, put off the shoes from thy feet: for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground.

6 Il ajouta: "Je suis la Divinité de ton père, le Dieu d’Abraham, d’Isaac et de Jacob…" Moïse se couvrit le visage, craignant de regarder le Seigneur.

And he said: I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Moses hid his face: for he durst not look at God.

7 L’Éternel poursuivit: "J’Ai vu, j’ai vu l’humiliation de mon peuple qui est en Égypte; j’ai accueilli sa plainte contre ses oppresseurs, car je connais ses souffrances.

And the Lord said to him: I have seen the affliction of my people in Egypt, and I have heard their cry because of the rigour of them that are over the works:

8 Je suis donc intervenu pour le délivrer de la puissance égyptienne et pour le faire passer de cette contrée-là dans une contrée fertile et spacieuse, dans une terre ruisselante de lait et de miel, où habitent le Cananéen, le Héthéen, l’Amorréen, le Phérézéen, le Hévéen et le Jébuséen.

And knowing their sorrow, I am come down to deliver them out of the hands of the Egyptians, and to bring them out of that land into a good and spacious land, into a land that floweth with milk and honey, to the places of the Chanaanite, and Hethite, and Amorrhite, and Pherezite, and Hevite, and Jebusite.

9 Oui, la plainte des enfants d’Israël est venue jusqu’à moi; oui, j’ai vu la tyrannie dont les Égyptiens les accablent.

For the cry of the children of Israel is come unto me: and I have seen their affliction, wherewith they are oppressed by the Egyptians.

10 Et maintenant va, je te délègue vers Pharaon; et fais que mon peuple, les enfants d’Israël, sortent de l’Égypte."

But come, and I will send thee to Pharao, that thou mayst bring forth my people, the children of Israel out of Egypt.

11 Moïse-dit au Seigneur: "Qui suis-je, pour aborder Pharaon et pour faire sortir les enfants d’Israël de l’Égypte?"

And Moses said to God: Who am I that I should go to Pharao, and should bring forth the children of Israel out of Egypt?

12 Il répondit: "C’Est que je serai avec toi et ceci te servira à prouver que c’est moi qui t’envoie: quand tu auras fait sortir ce peuple de l’Égypte, vous adorerez le Seigneur sur cette montagne même."

And he said to him: I will be with thee: and this thou shalt have for a sign, that I have sent thee: When thou shalt have brought my people out of Egypt, thou shalt offer sacrifice to God upon this mountain.

13 Moïse dit à Dieu: "Or, je vais trouver les enfants d’Israël et je leur dirai: Le Dieu de vos pères m’envoie vers vous… S’Ils me disent: Quel est son nom? que leur dirai-je?"

Moses said to God: Lo, I shall go to the children of Israel, and say to them: The God of your fathers hath sent me to you. If they should say to me: What is his name? what shall I say to them?

14 Dieu répondit à Moïse: "Je suis l’Être invariable!" Et il ajouta: "Ainsi parleras-tu aux enfants d’Israël: C’Est l’Être invariable qui m’a délégué auprès de vous."

God said to Moses: I AM WHO AM. He said: Thus shalt thou say to the children of Israel: HE WHO IS, hath sent me to you.

15 Dieu dit encore à Moïse: "Parle ainsi aux enfants d’Israël: ‘L’Éternel, le Dieu de vos pères, le Dieu d’Abraham, d’Isaac et de Jacob, m’envoie vers vous.’ Tel est mon nom à jamais, tel sera mon attribut dans tous les âges.

And God said again to Moses: Thus shalt thou say to the children of Israel: The Lord God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me to you: This is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations.

16 Va rassembler les anciens d’Israël et dis-leur: ‘L’Éternel, Dieu de vos pères, Dieu d’Abraham, d’Isaac et de Jacob, m’est apparu en disant: J’Ai fixé mon attention sur vous et sur ce qu’on vous fait en Égypte

Go, gather together the ancients of Israel, and thou shalt say to them: The Lord God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath appeared to me, saying: Visiting I have visited you: and I have seen all that hath befallen you in Egypt.

17 et j’ai résolu de vous faire monter, du servage de l’Égypte, au territoire du Cananéen, du Héthéen, de l’Amorréen, du Phérézéen, du Hévéen et du Jébuséen, contrée ruisselante de lait et de miel.’

And I have said the word to bring you forth out of the affliction of Egypt, into the land of the Chanaanite, the Hethite, and the Amorrhite, and Pherezite, and Hevite, and Jebusite, to a land that floweth with milk and honey.

18 Et ils écouteront ta voix; alors tu iras, avec les anciens d’Israël, trouver le roi d’Égypte et vous lui direz: ‘L’Éternel, le Dieu des Hébreux, s’est manifesté à nous. Et maintenant nous voudrions aller à trois journées de chemin, dans le désert, sacrifier à l’Éternel, notre Dieu’

And they shall hear thy voice: and thou shalt go in, thou and the ancients of Israel, to the king of Egypt, and thou shalt say to him: The Lord God of the Hebrews hath called us: we will go three days’ journey into the wilderness, to sacrifice unto the Lord our God.

19 Or, je sais que le roi d’Égypte ne vous laissera point partir, pas même en présence d’une puissance supérieure.

But I know that the king of Egypt will not let you go, but by a mighty hand.

20 Mais j’étendrai ma main et je terrasserai l’Égypte par tous les prodiges que j’accomplirai dans son sein; alors seulement on vous laissera partir.

For I will stretch forth my hand and will strike Egypt with all my wonders which I will do in the midst of them: after these he will let you go.

21 Et j’inspirerai aux Égyptiens de la bienveillance pour ce peuple; si bien que, lorsque vous partirez, vous ne partirez point les mains vides.

And I will give favour to this people, in the sight of the Egyptians: and when you go forth, you shall not depart empty:

22 Chaque femme demandera à sa voisine, à l’habitante de sa maison, des vases d’argent, des vases d’or, des parures; vous en couvrirez vos fils et vos filles et vous dépouillerez l’Égypte.

But every woman shall ask of her neighbour, and of her that is in her house, vessels of silver and of gold, and raiment: and you shall put them on your sons and daughters, and shall spoil Egypt.
