1 Salomon s’allia avec Pharaon, roi d’Egypte: il épousa la fille de Pharaon et l’installa dans la Cité de David, jusqu’à ce qu’il eût achevé de bâtir sa propre maison, le temple du Seigneur et le mur d’enceinte de Jérusalem.
And Solomon intermarried with Pharaoh the king of Egypt, and took the daughter of Pharaoh, and brought her into the city of David, until he had finished building his own house, and the house of the Lord, and the wall of Jerusalem round about.
2 Cependant, le peuple sacrifiait sur les hauts-lieux, parce qu’aucune maison n’avait encore été, jusque-là, édifiée en l’honneur de l’Eternel.
But the people sacrificed still on the high-places; because there was no house built unto the name of the Lord, until those days.
3 Salomon aima le Seigneur, se conformant aux instructions de son père David; seulement, il offrait des sacrifices et brûlait de l’encens sur les hauts-lieux.
And Solomon loved the Lord, walking in the statutes of David his father: only that he sacrificed and burnt incense on the high-places.
4 Le roi alla à Gabaon pour y sacrifier, car là était le principal haut-lieu; et sur cet autel, Salomon offrit mille holocaustes.
And the king went to Gib'on to sacrifice there; for that was the great high-place: one thousand burnt-offerings did Solomon offer upon that altar.
5 Etant à Gabaon, Salomon vit, dans un songe nocturne, apparaître le Seigneur, qui lui dit: "Demande; que dois-je te donner?"
In Gib'on the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream of the night: and God said, Ask what I shall give thee.
6 Salomon répondit: "Tu as témoigné à ton serviteur, à mon père David, une grande faveur, parce qu’il a marché devant toi avec sincérité, justice et droiture de cœur; et tu lui as continué cette faveur insigne en lui donnant un fils, son successeur sur le trône, comme il l’est aujourd’hui.
And Solomon said, Thou hast shown unto thy servant David my father great kindness, just as he walked before thee in truth, and in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with thee; and thou hast kept for him this great kindness, and thou hast given him a son who sitteth on his throne, as it is this day.
7 Maintenant donc, Eternel, mon Dieu, tu m’as fait régner, moi ton serviteur, à la place de David, mon père, et je suis un tout jeune homme, inhabile à me conduire.
And now, O Lord my God, thou hast made thy servant king in the place of David my father: and I am but a young lad; I know not how to go out or come in.
8 Et ton serviteur est entouré d’un peuple qui est le tien, que tu as élu, peuple nombreux dont la multitude est incalculable.
And thy servant is in the midst of thy people which thou hast chosen, a great people, that cannot he numbered nor counted for multitude.
9 Donne donc à ton serviteur un cœur intelligent, capable de juger ton peuple, sachant distinguer le bien du mal; autrement, qui pourrait gouverner un peuple aussi considérable que celui-ci?"
Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, to discern between good and bad; for who would [otherwise] be able to judge this thy great people?
10 Ce discours plut au Seigneur, satisfait de la demande exprimée par Salomon
And the speech was pleasing in the eyes of the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing.
11 et Dieu lui dit: "Parce que tu as fait une telle demande, parce que tu n’as demandé ni de longs jours, ni des richesses, ni la vie de tes ennemis, que tu as seulement demandé l’intelligence afin de savoir rendre la justice,
And God said unto him, Because thou hast asked this thing, and hast not asked for thyself long life; and hast not asked for thyself riches, nor hast asked the life of thy enemies; but hast asked for thyself discernment to understand [how to give] judgment:
12 j’acquiesce à ton désir je te donne un tel esprit de sagesse et d’intelligence, que ton pareil n’a pas existé avant toi ni ne se verra après toi.
Behold, I have done according to thy word; lo, I have given thee a wise and a discerning heart; so that like unto thee there was none before thee, nor after thee shall any one arise like unto thee.
13 Mais je te donne, de plus, ce que tu n’as pas demandé: la richesse et la gloire, en quoi ne t’égalera aucun des rois, pendant toute la durée de ta vie.
And also what thou hast not asked have I given thee, both riches and honor: so that like unto thee there shall not have been any one among the kings all thy days.
14 Et si tu marches dans mes voies, fidèle à mes lois et à mes préceptes, comme a fait David, ton père, je prolongerai tes jours."
And if thou wilt walk in my ways, to keep my statutes and my commandments, as thy father David did walk, then will I lengthen thy days.
15 Salomon s’éveilla et vit que c’était un songe. De retour à Jérusalem, il se présenta devant l’arche d’alliance du Seigneur, offrit des holocaustes et des sacrifices rémunératoires, et donna un festin à tous ses serviteurs.
And Solomon awoke, and, behold, it was a dream; and he went to Jerusalem, and stood before the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and offered up burnt-offerings, and prepared peace-offerings, and made a feast to all his servants.
16 En ce temps-là, deux femmes de mauvaise vie vinrent se présenter devant le roi.
Then came there two women, that were harlots, unto the king, and placed themselves before him.
17 Et l’une de ces femmes dit "Ecoute-moi, Seigneur! Moi et cette femme nous habitons la même maison; j’y ai donné naissance à un enfant, étant avec elle.
And the one woman said, Pardon, my Lord, I and this woman dwell in one house; and I was delivered of a child with her in the house.
18 Trois jours après ma délivrance, cette femme a également accouché. Or, nous vivons ensemble, nul étranger n’habite avec nous la maison, nous deux seules y demeurons.
And it came to pass on the third day after I was delivered, that also this woman was delivered: and we were together, there was no stranger with us in the house, only we two were in the house.
19 Pendant la nuit, l’enfant de cette femme est mort, parce qu’elle s’était couchée sur lui.
And this woman's son died in the night; because she had overlaid him.
20 Mais elle s’est levée au milieu de la nuit, a enlevé mon fils d’auprès de moi, tandis que ta servante était endormie, l’a couchée sur son sein, et son fils qui était mort, elle l’a déposé entre mes bras.
And she arose in the midst of the night, and took my son from beside me, while thy hand-maid slept, and laid him in her bosom, and her dead son she laid in my bosom.
21 Comme je me disposais, le matin, à allaiter mon enfant, voici, il était mort! Je l’examinai attentivement quand il fit grand jour, et ce n’était pas là le fils que j’avais enfanté.
And when I rose in the morning to give my son suck, behold, he was dead; but when I looked at him carefully in the morning, behold, it was not my son, whom I had born.
22 Non pas! dit l’autre femme, mon fils est vivant, et c’est le tien qui est mort! Point du tout, reprit la première, c’est le tien qui est mort, celui qui vit est le mien!" C’Est ainsi qu’elles discutaient devant le roi.
And the other woman said, It is not so; my son is the living one, and thy son is the dead; and this one said, It is not so; thy son is the dead, and my son is the living: thus they spoke before the king.
23 Le roi dit alors: "L’Une dit: Cet enfant qui vit est le mien, et c’est le tien qui est mort; l’autre dit: Non, c’est le tien qui est mort, celui qui vit est le mien."
Then said the king, This one saith, This is my son that liveth, and thy son is dead: and the other saith, It is not so; thy son is the dead, and my son is the living.
24 Le roi ajouta: "Apportez-moi un glaive;" et l’on présenta un glaive au roi.
And the king said, Fetch me a sword: and they brought the sword before the king.
25 Et le roi dit: "Coupez en deux parts l’enfant vivant, et donnez-en une moitié à l’une de ces femmes, une moitié à l’autre."
And the king said, Hew the living child in two, and give the one half to one, and the other half to the other.
26 La mère de l’enfant vivant, dont les entrailles étaient émues de pitié pour son fils, s’écria, parlant au roi: "De grâce, seigneur! Qu’on lui donne l’enfant vivant, qu’on ne le fasse pas mourir!" Mais l’autre disait: "Ni toi ni moi ne l’aurons: coupez!"
Then spoke the woman whose son was the living unto the king, for her love had become enkindled for her son, and she said, O pardon, my Lord, give her the living child, and only do not slay it; but the other said, Neither mine nor thine shall it be, hew it asunder.
27 Le roi reprit alors la parole et dit: "Donnez-lui l’enfant vivant et gardez-vous de le faire mourir: celle-ci est sa mère."
The king then answered and said, Give her the living child, and do not slay it: she is its mother.
28 Tout Israël eut connaissance du jugement que le roi avait rendu, et ils furent saisis de respect pour le roi; car ils comprirent qu’une sagesse divine l’inspirait dans l’exercice de la justice.
And when all Israel heard of the judgment which the king had given, they feared the king; for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him, to exercise justice.
