Juges 17

1 Et il y avait un homme de la montagne d’Éphraïm, dont le nom était Michée;

In that time, there was a certain man, from mount Ephraim, named Micah.

2 et il dit à sa mère: Les 1 100 [pièces] d’argent qui t’ont été prises, et au sujet desquelles tu as fait des imprécations et as aussi parlé à mes oreilles…, voici, l’argent est par-devers moi; c’est moi qui l’avais pris. Et sa mère dit: Béni soit mon fils de par l’Éternel!

And he said to his mother, “The one thousand one hundred silver coins, which you had separated for yourself, and about which you had sworn in my hearing, behold, I have them, and they are with me.” And she answered him, “My son has been blessed by the Lord.”

3 Et il rendit à sa mère les 1 100 [pièces] d’argent; et sa mère dit: J’avais consacré de ma main l’argent à l’Éternel pour mon fils, afin d’en faire une image taillée, et une image de fonte; et maintenant, je te le rends.

Therefore, he restored them to his mother. And she said to him: “I have consecrated and vowed this silver to the Lord, so that my son would receive it from my hand, and would make a molten idol and a graven image. And now I deliver it to you.”

4 Et il rendit l’argent à sa mère; et sa mère prit 200 [pièces] d’argent et les donna au fondeur, et il en fit une image taillée, et une image de fonte; et elles furent dans la maison de Michée.

And when he restored these to his mother, she took two hundred of the silver coins, and she gave them to the silversmith, so that he might make from them a molten idol and a graven image. And it was in the house of Micah.

5 Et l’homme Michée eut une maison de dieux, et il fit un éphod et des théraphim, et consacra l’un de ses fils, et celui-ci fut son sacrificateur.

And he also separated in it a little shrine for the god. And he made an ephod and theraphim, that is, a priestly garment and idols. And he filled the hand of one of his sons, and he became his priest.

6 En ces jours-là, il n’y avait pas de roi en Israël; chacun faisait ce qui était bon à ses yeux.

In those days, there was no king in Israel. Instead, each one did what seemed right to himself.

7 Et il y avait un jeune homme de Bethléhem de Juda, [ville] de la famille de Juda, et il était Lévite, et il séjournait là.

Also, there was another young man, from Bethlehem of Judah, one of his relatives. And he himself was a Levite, and he was living there.

8 Et l’homme s’en alla de sa ville, de Bethléhem de Juda, pour séjourner là où il trouverait [un lieu]; et, chemin faisant, il vint à la montagne d’Éphraïm, jusqu’à la maison de Michée.

Then, departing from the city of Bethlehem, he wished to sojourn wherever he would find it beneficial to himself. And when he had arrived at mount Ephraim, while making the journey, he also turned aside for a little while to the house of Micah.

9 Et Michée lui dit: D’où viens-tu? Et il lui dit: Je suis un Lévite de Bethléhem de Juda, et je m’en vais pour séjourner là où je trouverai [un lieu].

And he was asked by him where he came from. And he responded: “I am a Levite from Bethlehem of Judah. And I am traveling so that I may live where I am able, if I perceive it to be useful to me.”

10 Et Michée lui dit: Demeure avec moi, et tu seras pour moi un père et un sacrificateur, et je te donnerai dix [pièces] d’argent par an, et un habillement complet, et ton entretien. Et le Lévite alla.

And Micah said: “Stay with me. And you shall be to me like a parent and a priest. And I will give to you, each year, ten silver coins, and a double-layered garment, and whatever provisions are necessary.”

11 Et le Lévite consentit à demeurer avec l’homme, et le jeune homme fut pour lui comme un de ses fils.

He agreed, and he stayed with the man. And he was to him like one of his sons.

12 Et Michée consacra le Lévite; et le jeune homme fut son sacrificateur; et il fut dans la maison de Michée.

And Micah filled his hand, and he had the young man with him as his priest,

13 Et Michée dit: Maintenant je connais que l’Éternel me fera du bien, puisque j’ai un Lévite pour sacrificateur.

saying: “Now I know that God will be good to me, since I have a priest from the stock of the Levites.”
