Juges 12

1 Et les hommes d’Éphraïm se rassemblèrent, et ils passèrent vers le nord, et dirent à Jephthé: Pourquoi as-tu passé pour combattre contre les fils d’Ammon, et ne nous as-tu pas appelés pour aller avec toi? Nous brûlerons au feu ta maison sur toi.

And the men of Ephraim are called together, and pass over northward, and say to Jephthah, 'Wherefore has thou passed over to fight against the Bene-Ammon, and on us hast not called to go with thee? thy house we burn over thee with fire.'

2 Et Jephthé leur dit: Nous avons eu de grands débats, moi et mon peuple, avec les fils d’Ammon; et je vous ai appelés, et vous ne m’avez pas sauvé de leur main.

And Jephthah saith unto them, 'A man of great strife I have been (I and my people) with the Bene-Ammon, and I call you, and ye have not saved me out of their hand,

3 Et quand j’ai vu que vous ne me sauviez pas, j’ai mis ma vie dans ma main, et j’ai passé vers les fils d’Ammon; et l’Éternel les a livrés en ma main. Et pourquoi êtes-vous montés contre moi en ce jour-ci, pour me faire la guerre?

and I see that thou art not a saviour, and I put my life in my hand, and pass over unto the Bene-Ammon, and Jehovah giveth them into my hand — and why have ye come up unto me this day to fight against me?'

4 Et Jephthé rassembla tous les hommes de Galaad et fit la guerre à Éphraïm; et les hommes de Galaad frappèrent Éphraïm, parce qu’ils avaient dit: Vous, Galaad, vous êtes des fugitifs d’Éphraïm, au milieu d’Éphraïm, au milieu de Manassé.

And Jephthah gathered all the men of Gilead, and fighteth with Ephraim, and the men of Gilead smite Ephraim, because they said, 'Fugitives of Ephraim [are] ye Gileadites, in the midst of Ephraim — in the midst of Manasseh.'

5 Et Galaad enleva à Éphraïm les gués du Jourdain; et il arriva que, lorsqu’un des fuyards d’Éphraïm disait: Je veux passer, les hommes de Galaad lui disaient: Es-tu Éphraïmite? et il disait: Non.

And Gilead captureth the passages of the Jordan to Ephraim, and it hath been, when [any of] the fugitives of Ephraim say, 'Let me pass over,' and the men of Gilead say to him, 'An Ephramite thou?' and he saith, 'No;'

6 Alors ils lui disaient: Dis donc Shibboleth. Mais il disait Sibboleth, car il ne pouvait pas bien prononcer. Alors ils le saisissaient et l’égorgeaient aux gués du Jourdain. Et il tomba en ce temps-là 42 000 [hommes] d’Éphraïm.

that they say to him, 'Say, I pray thee, Shibboleth;' and he saith, 'Sibboleth,' and is not prepared to speak right — and they seize him, and slaughter him at the passages of the Jordan, and there fall at that time, of Ephraim, forty and two chiefs.

7 Et Jephthé jugea Israël six ans. Et Jephthé, le Galaadite, mourut, et il fut enterré dans une des villes de Galaad.

And Jephthah judged Israel six years, and Jephthah the Gileadite dieth, and is buried in [one of] the cities of Gilead.

8 Et après lui, Ibtsan de Bethléhem jugea Israël.

And after him Ibzan of Beth-Lehem judgeth Israel,

9 Et il eut 30 fils, et 30 filles qu’il envoya au-dehors, et il fit venir du dehors 30 filles pour ses fils. Et il jugea Israël sept ans.

and he hath thirty sons and thirty daughters, he hath sent without and thirty daughters hath brought in to his sons from without; and he judgeth Israel seven years.

10 Et Ibtsan mourut, et il fut enterré à Bethléhem.

And Ibzan dieth, and is buried in Beth-Lehem.

11 Et après lui, Élon, le Zabulonite, jugea Israël; et il jugea Israël dix ans.

And after him Elon the Zebulunite judgeth Israel, and he judgeth Israel ten years,

12 Et Élon, le Zabulonite, mourut, et il fut enterré à Ajalon, dans le pays de Zabulon.

and Elon the Zebulunite dieth, and is buried in Aijalon, in the land of Zebulun.

13 Et après lui, Abdon, fils d’Hillel, le Pirhathonite, jugea Israël.

And after him, Abdon son of Hillel, the Pirathonite, judgeth Israel,

14 Et il eut 40 fils et 30 petits-fils, qui montaient sur 70 ânons. Et il jugea Israël huit ans.

and he hath forty sons, and thirty grandsons, riding on seventy ass-colts, and he judgeth Israel eight years.

15 Et Abdon, fils d’Hillel, le Pirhathonite, mourut; et il fut enterré à Pirhathon, dans le pays d’Éphraïm, sur la montagne de l’Amalékite.

And Abdon son of Hillel, the Pirathonite, dieth, and is buried in Pirathon, in the land of Ephraim, in the hill-country of the Amalekite.
