Exode 20
1 Et Dieu prononça toutes ces paroles, en disant:
Then God said this [to the Israeli people: ]
2 Je suis Yahweh, ton dieu, qui t’ai fait sortir du pays d’Égypte, de la maison de servitude.
“I am Yahweh God, the one you [worship]. I am the one who brought you out of Egypt. I am the one who freed you from being slaves [there].
3 Tu n’auras pas d’autres dieux devant ma face.
[So] you must worship [only] me; you must not worship any other god.
4 Tu ne te feras pas d’image taillée, ni aucune figure de ce qui est en haut dans le ciel, ou de ce qui est en bas sur la terre, ou de ce qui est dans les eaux au-dessous de la terre.
You must not carve/make for yourselves any idol that represents anything in the sky or that is on the ground or that is in the water under the ground/earth.
5 Tu ne te prosterneras pas devant elles et tu ne les serviras point. Car moi Yahweh, ton Dieu, je suis un Dieu jaloux, qui punis l’iniquité des pères sur les enfants, sur la troisième et sur la quatrième génération pour ceux qui me haïssent,
You must not bow down to any idol and worship it, because I am Yahweh God, and I (am very jealous/want you to worship me only). I will punish those who sin and hate me. I will punish not only them, but I will punish (their descendants, down to the third and fourth generation/their children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren).
6 et faisant miséricorde jusqu’à mille générations, pour ceux m’aiment et qui gardent mes commandements.
But I will steadfastly love thousands of generations of those who love me and obey my commandments (OR, I will love for thousands of generations.)
7 Tu ne prendras pas le nom de Yahweh, ton Dieu, en vain, car Yahweh ne laissera pas impuni celui qui prendra son nom en vain.
Do not use my name carelessly (OR, for wrong/evil purposes), because I am Yahweh God, the one whom you [should worship], and I will certainly punish those who use my name for wrong/evil purposes [LIT].
8 Souviens-toi du jour du sabbat pour le sanctifier.
Do not forget that the seventh day [of every week] is mine, so dedicate those days to me.
9 Pendant six jours tu travailleras, et tu feras tout ton ouvrage.
There are six days each week for you to do all your work,
10 Mais le septième jour est un sabbat consacré à Yahweh, ton Dieu: tu ne feras aucun ouvrage, ni toi, ni ton fils, ni ta fille, ni ton serviteur, ni ta servante, ni ton bétail, ni l’étranger qui est dans tes portes.
but the seventh day is a day of rest, a day dedicated to me, Yahweh God, the one whom you [should worship]. On that day you must not do any work. You and your sons and daughters and your male and female slaves must not work. You must not even force your livestock to work, and you must not allow foreigners to work, those who are living in your country.
11 Car pendant six jours Yahweh a fait le ciel, la terre, la mer et tout ce qu’ils contiennent, et il s’est reposé le septième jour: c’est pourquoi Yahweh a béni le jour du sabbat et l’a sanctifié.
I, Yahweh, created the sky, the earth, the ocean, and everything that is in them, in six days. Then I stopped my work of creating everything, and rested on the seventh day. That is the reason that I, Yahweh, have blessed the rest day and set it apart [to be a sacred/special day].
12 Honore ton père et ta mère, afin que tes jours soient prolongés dans le pays que Yahweh, ton Dieu, te donne.
Honor/Respect your fathers and your mothers, in order that you may live a long time in the land that I, Yahweh God, will give you.
13 Tu ne tueras point.
Do not murder anyone.
14 Tu ne commettras pas d’adultère.
Do not (commit adultery/have sex with anyone other than your spouse).
15 Tu ne déroberas point.
Do not steal anything.
16 Tu ne porteras pas de faux témoignages contre ton prochain.
Do not falsely accuse anyone [of committing a crime].
17 Tu ne convoiteras pas la maison de ton prochain; tu ne convoiteras pas la femme de ton prochain, ni son serviteur, ni sa servante, ni son bœuf, ni son âne, ni rien de ce qui appartient à ton prochain.
Do not (covet/desire to have) someone else’s house, someone else’s wife, someone else’s male or female slave, someone else’s livestock, someone else’s donkeys, or anything else that some other person owns.”
18 Tout le peuple entendait les tonnerres et le son de la trompette; il voyait les flammes et la montagne fumante; à ce spectacle, il tremblait et se tenait à distance.
When the people heard the thunder and saw the lightning, and when they heard the sound of the trumpet and saw the smoke on the mountain, they were afraid and trembled. They stood at a distance,
19 Ils dirent à Moïse: « Parles-nous, toi, et nous écouterons; mais que Dieu ne nous parle point, de peur que nous ne mourrions. »
and said to Moses/me, “If you speak to us, we will listen. But do not let God speak any more to us. [We are afraid that] if he speaks [any more] to us, we will die.”
20 Moïse répondit au peuple: « Ne vous effrayez pas, car c’est pour vous mettre à l’épreuve que Dieu est venu, et pour que sa crainte vous soit présente, afin que vous ne péchiez pas. »
Moses/I replied, “Do not be afraid! God has come to determine/test [how you will behave]. He wants you to revere him, and to not sin.”
21 Et le peuple resta à distance; mais Moïse s’approcha de la nuée où était Dieu.
Then, as the people [watched from] a distance, Moses/I went close to the black cloud where God was.
22 Et Yahweh dit à Moïse: « Tu parleras ainsi aux enfants d’Israël: vous avez vu que je vous ai parlé du ciel.
Yahweh said to Moses/me, “Say this to the Israeli people: ‘You have heard how I, Yahweh, have spoken to you from heaven. I told you that you must not make any idols of silver or gold [that you will worship instead] of me.
23 Vous ne ferez pas à côté de moi de dieux d’argent et vous ne ferez pas de dieux d’or.
24 Tu m’élèveras un autel de terre, sur lequel tu offriras tes holocaustes et tes sacrifices pacifiques, tes brebis et tes bœufs. Dans tous les lieux où j’aurai fait souvenir de mon nom, je viendrai vers toi, et je te bénirai.
Make for me an altar from dirt. Sacrifice on it the animals that you will burn completely. Also sacrifice on it the animals that you will not burn completely, to maintain fellowship with me. Worship me [MTY] in any place that I choose for you to honor/worship me; and if you do that, I will come to you and bless you.
25 Si tu m’élèves un autel de pierre, tu ne le construiras pas en pierres taillées, car, en levant ton ciseau sur la pierre, tu la rendrais profane.
If you make for me an altar from stones, do not make it from stones that you have cut [to make them look nice], because you will make the altar unsuitable for [worshiping] me if you use tools to cut the stones.
26 Tu ne monteras pas par des degrés à mon autel, afin que ta nudité n’y soit pas découverte.
Do not make an altar that has steps in front of it, because if you do that, [people] could see your naked [buttocks] as you go up the steps.’”
