Deutéronome 1
1 Voici les paroles que Moïse adressa à tout Israël, de l’autre côté du Jourdain, dans le désert, dans l’Arabah, vis-à-vis de Souph, entre Pharan, Thophel, Laban, Haséroth et Di-Zahab.
These [are] the words which Moses has spoken to all Israel beyond the Jordan in the wilderness, in the plain opposite Suph, between Paran, and Tophel, and Laban, and Hazeroth, and Di-Zahab.
2 — Il y a onze journées de marche depuis Horeb, par le chemin de la montagne de Séïr, jusqu’à Cadès-Barné. —
[It takes] eleven days [to go] from Horeb, the way of Mount Seir, to Kadesh-Barnea.
3 En la quarantième année, au onzième mois, le premier jour du mois, Moïse parla aux enfants d’Israël selon tout ce que Yahweh lui avait ordonné de leur dire:
And it comes to pass in the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, on the first of the month, Moses has spoken to the sons of Israel according to all that YHWH has commanded him concerning them,
4 après qu’il eut battu Séhon, roi des Amorrhéens, qui habitait à Hésebon, et Og, roi de Basan, qui habitait à Astaroth et à Edraï.
after his striking Sihon king of the Amorite who is dwelling in Heshbon, and Og king of Bashan who is dwelling in Ashtaroth in Edrei.
5 De l’autre côté du Jourdain, dans le pays de Moab, Moïse commença à expliquer cette loi, en disant:
Beyond the Jordan, in the land of Moab, Moses has begun to explain this law, saying,
6 Yahweh, notre Dieu, nous a parlé à Horeb, en disant: « Vous avez séjourné assez longtemps dans cette montagne;
“Our God YHWH has spoken to us in Horeb, saying, For you dwell at this mountain long enough;
7 tournez-vous et partez; allez à la montagne des Amorrhéens et dans tous ses alentours: dans l’Arabah, dans la montagne, dans la Séphéla, dans le Négeb, sur la côte de la mer, au pays des Chananéens, et au Liban, jusqu’au grand fleuve, au fleuve de l’Euphrate.
turn and journey for yourselves, and go to the mountain of the Amorite, and to all its neighboring places in the plain, in the hill-country, and in the low country, and in the south, and in the haven of the sea, the land of the Canaanite, and of Lebanon, as far as the great river, the Euphrates River;
8 Voici que je mets ce pays devant vous; allez et prenez possession du pays que Yahweh a juré à vos pères, Abraham, Isaac et Jacob, de leur donner, à eux et à leur postérité après eux. »
see, I have set the land before you; go in and possess the land which YHWH has sworn to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give to them and to their seed after them.
9 Je vous parlai ainsi dans ce temps-là: « Je ne puis, à moi seul, vous porter.
And I speak to you at that time, saying, I am not able to bear you by myself;
10 Yahweh, votre Dieu vous a multipliés, et vous êtes aujourd’hui aussi nombreux que les étoiles du ciel.
your God YHWH has multiplied you, and behold, today you [are] as the stars of the heavens for multitude;
11 — Que Yahweh, le Dieu de vos pères, vous fasse croître encore mille fois plus, et qu’il vous bénisse comme il vous l’a promis! —
YHWH, God of your fathers, is adding to you, as you [are], one thousand times, and blesses you as He has spoken to you.
12 Comment porterais-je, à moi seul, votre charge, votre fardeau et vos contestations?
How do I bear your pressure, and your burden, and your strife by myself?
13 Prenez dans vos tribus des hommes sages, intelligents et connus, et je les établirai à votre tête. »
Provide wise and understanding men for yourselves that are known to your tribes, and I set them for your heads;
14 Vous me répondîtes en disant: « La chose que tu proposes de faire est bonne ».
and you answer me and say, The thing which you have spoken [is] good to do.
15 Je pris donc les chefs de vos tribus, des hommes sages et connus, et je les mis à votre tête comme chefs de milliers, chefs de centaines, chefs de cinquantaines et chefs de dizaines, et comme magistrats dans vos tribus.
And I take the heads of your tribes, wise men that are known, and I appoint them [as] heads over you, princes of thousands, and princes of hundreds, and princes of fifties, and princes of tens, and authorities for your tribes.
16 Dans le même temps, je donnai ce commandement à vos juges: « Ecoutez les débats de vos frères, et jugez selon la justice les différends qu’ils auront chacun avec son frère ou avec l’étranger qui est avec lui.
And I command your judges at that time, saying, Listen between your brothers—then you have judged [in] righteousness between a man, and his brother, and his sojourner;
17 Vous n’aurez pas égard, dans vos jugements, à l’apparence des personnes; vous écouterez les petits comme les grands, n’ayant peur d’aucun homme, car le jugement est de Dieu; et si vous trouvez une cause trop difficile, vous la porterez devant moi, pour que je l’entende. »
you do not discern faces in judgment; you hear the little as well as the great; you are not afraid of the face of any, for the judgment is God’s, and the thing which is too hard for you, you bring near to me, and I have heard it.
18 C’est ainsi que je vous prescrivis, dans ce temps-là, toutes les choses que vous auriez à faire.
And I command you at that time all the things which you do.
19 Etant partis d’Horeb, nous traversâmes tout ce vaste et affreux désert que vous avez vu, nous dirigeant vers la montagne des Amorrhéens, comme Yahweh, votre Dieu, nous l’avait ordonné, et nous arrivâmes à Cadès-Barné.
And we journey from Horeb, and go [through] all that great and fearful wilderness which you have seen, the way of the hill-country of the Amorite, as our God YHWH has commanded us, and we come to Kadesh-Barnea.
20 Je vous dis alors: « Vous êtes arrivés à la montagne des Amorrhéens, que nous donne Yahweh, notre Dieu.
And I say to you, You have come to the hill-country of the Amorite, which our God YHWH is giving to us;
21 Vois, Yahweh, ton Dieu, met ce pays devant toi; monte et prends-en possession, comme te l’a dit Yahweh, le Dieu de tes pères; ne crains pas et ne t’effraie pas. »
see, your God YHWH has set the land before you; go up, possess, as YHWH, God of your fathers, has spoken to you; do not fear, nor be frightened.
22 Vous vous approchâtes tous de moi et vous dites: « Envoyons des hommes devant nous, pour explorer le pays et nous faire un rapport sur le chemin par lequel nous y monterons, et sur les villes où nous arriverons. »
And you come near to me, all of you, and say, Let us send men before us, and they search the land for us, and they bring us back word [concerning] the way in which we go up into it, and the cities to which we come in;
23 La chose m’ayant paru bonne, je pris parmi vous douze hommes, un homme par tribu.
and the thing is good in my eyes, and I take twelve men from you, one man for the tribe.
24 Ils partirent et, après avoir traversé la montagne, ils arrivèrent à la vallée d’Escol et l’explorèrent.
And they turn and go up to the hill-country, and come to the Valley of Eshcol, and spy it out,
25 Ils prirent dans leurs mains des fruits du pays et nous les apportèrent, et ils nous firent un rapport, en disant: « C’est un bon pays que nous donne Yahweh, notre Dieu. »
and they take in their hand from the fruit of the land, and bring [it] down to us, and bring us back word, and say, The land is good which our God YHWH is giving to us.
26 Cependant vous ne voulûtes pas monter, et vous fûtes rebelles à l’ordre de Yahweh, votre Dieu.
And you have not been willing to go up, and you provoke the mouth of your God YHWH,
27 Vous murmurâtes dans vos tentes, en disant: « C’est parce que Yahweh nous hait qu’il nous a fait sortir du pays d’Égypte, pour nous livrer entre les mains de l’Amorrhéen, afin de nous détruire.
and murmur in your tents, and say, In YHWH’s hating us He has brought us out of the land of Egypt, to give us into the hand of the Amorite—to destroy us;
28 Où montons-nous? Nos frères nous ont fait fondre le cœur, en disant: C’est un peuple plus grand et de plus haute stature que nous; ce sont des grandes villes, dont les murailles s’élèvent jusqu’au ciel, et même nous y avons vu des fils des Enacim. »
to where are we going up? Our brothers have melted our heart, saying, [The] people [are] greater and taller than we; [the] cities [are] great and fortified up to the heavens, and we have also seen sons of Anakim there.
29 Je vous dis: « Ne vous effrayez pas et n’ayez pas peur d’eux.
And I say to you, Do not be terrified, nor be afraid of them;
30 Yahweh, votre Dieu, qui marche devant vous, combattra lui-même pour vous, selon tout ce qu’il a fait pour vous sous vos yeux en Égypte,
your God YHWH, who is going before you—He fights for you, according to all that He has done with you in Egypt before your eyes,
31 et ensuite au désert, où tu as vu comment Yahweh, ton Dieu, t’a porté, ainsi qu’un homme porte son fils, sur toute la route que vous avez parcourue jusqu’à votre arrivée en ce lieu. »
and in the wilderness where you have seen that your God YHWH has carried you, as a man carries his son, in all the way which you have gone until your coming to this place.
32 Malgré cela vous n’aviez pas confiance en Yahweh, votre Dieu,
And in this thing you are not steadfast in your God YHWH,
33 qui marchait devant vous sur le chemin pour vous chercher des lieux de campement, dans un feu pendant la nuit pour vous montrer le chemin où vous deviez marcher, et dans une nuée pendant le jour.
who is going before you in the way to search out for you a place for your encamping, in fire by night, to show you in the way in which you go, and in a cloud by day.
34 Yahweh entendit le bruit de vos paroles et, dans sa colère, il jura, en disant:
And YHWH hears the voice of your words, and is angry, and swears, saying,
35 « Aucun des hommes de cette génération mauvaise ne verra le bon pays que j’ai juré de donner à vos pères,
Not one of these men of this evil generation sees the good land which I have sworn to give to your fathers,
36 excepté Caleb fils de Jéphoné; il le verra, lui, et je lui donnerai, à lui et à ses enfants, le pays qu’il a foulé, parce qu’il a fidèlement suivi Yahweh. »
except Caleb son of Jephunneh—he sees it, and to him I give the land on which he has trodden, and to his sons, because that he has been fully after YHWH.
37 Yahweh s’irrita aussi contre moi, à cause de vous, et il dit: « Toi non plus tu n’y entreras pas.
Moreover, YHWH has been angry with me for your sake, saying, Indeed, you do not go in there;
38 Mais Josué, fils de Nun, ton serviteur, y entrera; fortifie-le, car c’est lui qui mettra Israël en possession de ce pays.
Joshua son of Nun, who is standing before you, he goes in there; strengthen him, for he causes Israel to inherit [it].
39 Et vos petits enfants dont vous avez dit: Ils seront une proie! et vos fils qui ne connaissent aujourd’hui ni le bien ni le mal, eux y entreront, c’est à eux que je le donnerai, ce sont eux qui le posséderont.
And your infants, of whom you have said, They are for a prey, and your sons who today have not known good and evil, they go in there, and I give it to them, and they possess it;
40 Vous, retournez en arrière et partez pour le désert, par le chemin de la mer Rouge. »
but you, turn and journey for yourselves toward the wilderness, the way of the Red Sea.
41 Vous répondîtes en me disant: « Nous avons péché contre Yahweh; nous monterons et nous combattrons, selon tout ce que Yahweh, notre Dieu, nous a ordonné. » Et vous ceignîtes chacun vos armes, et vous vous disposâtes inconsidérément à monter à la montagne.
And you answer and say to me, We have sinned against YHWH; we go up and we have fought, according to all that which our God YHWH has commanded us; and you each gird on his weapons of war, and you are ready to go up into the hill-country;
42 Yahweh me dit: « Dis-leur: Ne montez pas et ne combattez pas, car je ne suis pas au milieu de vous; ne vous faites pas battre par vos ennemis. »
and YHWH says to me, Say to them, You do not go up, nor fight, for I am not in your midst, and you are not struck before your enemies.
43 Je vous parlai, mais vous n’écoutiez pas; vous résistiez à l’ordre de Yahweh, et vous fûtes assez présomptueux pour monter à la montagne.
And I speak to you, and you have not listened, and provoke the mouth of YHWH, and act proudly, and go up into the hill-country;
44 Alors l’Amorrhéen qui habite cette montagne, sortit à votre rencontre; il vous poursuivit comme font les abeilles, et vous battit en Seïr, jusqu’à Horma.
and the Amorite who is dwelling in that hill-country comes out to meet you, and they pursue you as the bees do, and strike you in Seir, even to Hormah.
45 Vous revîntes et vous pleurâtes devant Yahweh; mais Yahweh n’écouta pas votre voix, et ne vous prêta pas l’oreille.
And you return and weep before YHWH, and YHWH has not listened to your voice, nor has He given ear to you;
46 Vous restâtes de longs jours à Cadès, le temps que vous y avez séjourné.
and you dwell in Kadesh [for] many days, according to the days which you had dwelt.”
