1 Lorsque le roi Ezéchias eut entendu ce rapport, il déchira ses vêtements, se couvrit d’un sac et alla dans la maison de Yahweh.
And when King Hezekiah heard it, he rent his clothes and put on sackecloth, and came into the house of the Lord,
2 Il envoya Eliacim, chef de sa maison, Sobna, le secrétaire, et les anciens des prêtres, couverts de sacs, vers Isaïe, le prophète, fils d’Amos.
And sent Eliakim which was the stewarde of the house, and Shebnah the chanceller, and the Elders of the Priestes clothed in sackecloth to Isaiah the Prophet the sonne of Amoz.
3 Ils lui dirent: « Ainsi dit Ezéchias: Ce jour est un jour d’angoisse, de châtiment et d’opprobre; car les enfants sont près de sortir du sein maternel, et il n’y a pas de force pour enfanter.
And they said vnto him, Thus saith Hezekiah, This day is a day of tribulation and of rebuke, and blasphemie: for the childre are come to the birth, and there is no strength to bring foorth.
4 Peut-être Yahweh, ton Dieu, entendra-t-il toutes les paroles du grand échanson, que le roi d’Assyrie, son maître, a envoyé pour insulter au Dieu vivant, et le punira-t-il à cause des paroles qu’a entendues Yahweh, ton Dieu. Fais donc monter une prière pour le reste qui subsiste encore. »
If so be the Lord thy God hath heard all the wordes of Rabshakeh, whome the King of Asshur his master hath sent to raile on the liuing God, and to reproch him with wordes which the Lord thy God hath heard, then lift thou vp thy prayer for the remnant that are left.
5 Les serviteurs du roi Ezéchias se rendirent auprès d’Isaïe;
So the seruants of King Hezekiah came to Isaiah.
6 et Isaïe leur dit: « Voici ce que vous direz à votre maître. Ainsi dit Yahweh: “Ne t’effraie pas des paroles que tu as entendues, par lesquelles les serviteurs du roi d’Assyrie m’ont outragé.
And Isaiah said vnto them, So shall ye say to your master, Thus sayeth the Lord, Be not afraide of the words which thou hast heard, wherewith the seruants of the king of Asshur haue blasphemed me.
7 Voici que je mets en lui un esprit tel que, sur une nouvelle qu’il apprendra, il retournera dans son pays, et je le ferai tomber par l’épée dans son pays.” »
Beholde, I will sende a blast vpon him, and he shall heare a noyse, and returne to his owne lande: and I will cause him to fall by the sworde in his owne lande.
8 Le grand échanson s’en retourna et trouva le roi d’Assyrie qui attaquait Lobna; car il avait appris que son maître était parti de Lachis.
So Rabshakeh returned, and founde the King of Asshur fighting against Libnah: for he had heard that he was departed from Lachish.
9 Le roi d’Assyrie reçut une nouvelle au sujet de Tharaca, roi d’Ethiopie; on lui dit: « Voici qu’il s’est mis en marche pour te faire la guerre. » Et il envoya de nouveau des messagers à Ezéchias, en disant:
He heard also men say of Tirhakah King of Ethiopia, Beholde, he is come out to fight against thee: he therefore departed and sent other messengers vnto Hezekiah, saying,
10 « Vous parlerez ainsi à Ezéchias, roi de Juda: Que ton Dieu en qui tu te confies, ne t’abuse pas en disant: Jérusalem ne sera pas livrée entre les mains du roi d’Assyrie.
Thus shall ye speake to Hezekiah King of Iudah, and say, Let not thy God deceiue thee in whome thou trustest, saying, Ierusalem shall not be deliuered into the hande of the King of Asshur.
11 Voici que tu as appris ce qu’ont fait les rois d’Assyrie à tous les pays, les soumettant à l’anathème!... Et toi, tu serais délivré!...
Beholde, thou hast heard what the Kings of Asshur haue done to all landes, how they haue destroyed them: and shalt thou be deliuered?
12 Est-ce que leurs dieux les ont délivrées, ces nations que mes pères ont détruites: Gosan, Haran, Réseph, et les fils d’Eden qui étaient à Thélasar?
Haue the gods of the heathen deliuered them which my fathers haue destroyed? as Gozan, and Haran, and Rezeph, and the children of Eden, which were in Thelasar?
13 Où sont le roi d’Emath, le roi d’Arphad et le roi de la ville de Sépharvaïm, d’Ana et d’Ava? »
Where is the King of Hamath, and the King of Arpad, and the King of the citie of Shepharuaim, Hena and Iuah?
14 Ezéchias ayant pris la lettre de la main des messagers, la lut; puis Ezéchias monta à la maison de Yahweh et la déploya devant Yahweh.
So Hezekiah receiued the letter of the hande of the messengers, and read it: and Hezekiah went vp into the house of the Lord, and Hezekiah spread it before the Lord.
15 Et Ezéchias pria devant Yahweh, en disant: « Yahweh, Dieu d’Israël, assis sur les Chérubins, c’est vous qui êtes le seul Dieu de tous les royaumes de la terre, vous qui avez fait les cieux et la terre.
And Hezekiah prayed before the Lord, and saide, O Lord God of Israel, which dwellest betweene the Cherubims, thou art very God alone ouer all the kingdomes of the earth: thou hast made the heauen and the earth.
16 Yahweh, inclinez votre oreille et écoutez; Yahweh, ouvrez vos yeux et regardez. Entendez les paroles de Sennachérib, qui a envoyé le grand échanson pour insulter au Dieu vivant.
Lord, bow downe thine eare, and heare: Lord open thine eyes and behold, and heare the wordes of Saneherib, who hath sent to blaspheme the liuing God.
17 Il est vrai, Yahweh, que les rois d’Assyrie ont détruit les nations et dévasté leurs territoires,
Trueth it is, Lord, that the Kings of Asshur haue destroyed the nations and their landes,
18 et qu’ils ont jeté leurs dieux dans le feu; car ce n’étaient pas des dieux, mais des ouvrages de mains d’homme, du bois et de la pierre; et ils les ont anéantis.
And haue set fire on their gods: for they were no gods, but the worke of mans hands, euen wood and stone: therefore they destroyed them.
19 Maintenant Yahweh, notre Dieu, sauvez-nous de la main de Sennachérib, et que tous les royaumes de la terre sachent que vous seul, Yahweh, êtes Dieu. »
Nowe therefore, O Lord our God, I beseech thee, saue thou vs out of his hande, that all the kingdomes of the earth may knowe, that thou, O Lord, art onely God.
20 Et Isaïe, fils d’Amos, envoya dire à Ezéchias: « Ainsi dit Yahweh, Dieu d’Israël: La prière que tu m’as adressée au sujet de Sennachérib, roi d’Assyrie, je l’ai entendue.
Then Isaiah the sonne of Amoz sent to Hezekiah, saying, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, I haue heard that which thou hast prayed me, concerning Saneherib King of Asshur.
21 Voici la parole que Yahweh a prononcée contre lui: Elle te méprise, elle se moque de toi, la vierge, fille de Sion; elle branle la tête derrière toi, la fille de Jérusalem.
This is the worde that the Lord hath spoken against him, O Virgine, daughter of Zion, he hath despised thee, and laughed thee to scorne: O daughter of Ierusalem, he hath shaken his head at thee.
22 Qui as-tu insulté et outragé? Contre qui as-tu élevé la voix, et porté les yeux en haut? Contre le Saint d’Israël!...
Whome hast thou railed on? and whome hast thou blasphemed? and against whome hast thou exalted thy voyce, and lifted vp thine eyes on hie? euen against the Holie one of Israel.
23 Par tes messagers tu as insulté le Seigneur, et tu as dit: Avec la multitude de mes chars, j’ai gravi le sommet des montagnes, les extrémités du Liban; Je couperai les plus élevés de ses cèdres, les plus beaux de ses cyprès; et j’atteindrai sa dernière cime, sa forêt semblable à un verger.
By thy messengers thou hast rayled on the Lord, and said, By the multitude of my charets I am come vp to the toppe of the mountaines, by the sides of Lebanon, and will cut downe the hie cedars thereof, and the faire firre trees thereof, and I will goe into the lodging of his borders, and into the forest of his Carmel.
24 J’ai creusé et j’ai bu des eaux étrangères; avec la plante de mes pieds je dessécherai tous les fleuves de l’Égypte.
I haue digged, and drunke the waters of others, and with the plant of my feete haue I dried all the floods closed in.
25 N’as-tu pas appris que depuis longtemps j’ai fait ces choses, que je les ai formées dès les temps anciens? A présent je les fais s’accomplir, pour que tu réduises en monceaux de ruines les villes fortes.
Hast thou not heard, howe I haue of olde time made it, and haue formed it long ago? and should I nowe bring it, that it should be destroyed, and laid on ruinous heapes, as cities defensed?
26 Leurs habitants sont sans force, dans l’épouvante et le trouble; ils sont comme l’herbe des champs et la tendre verdure, comme le gazon des toits, comme le blé niellé qui sèche avant sa maturité.
Whose inhabitants haue small power, and are afraid, and confounded: they are like the grasse of the field, and greene herbe, or grasse on ye house toppes, or as corne blasted before it be growen.
27 Mais je sais quand tu t’assieds, quand tu sors et quand tu entres, je connais ta fureur contre moi.
I knowe thy dwelling, yea, thy going out, and thy comming in, and thy furie against me.
28 Parce que tu es furieux contre moi, et que ton arrogance est montée à mes oreilles, je mettrai mon anneau dans ta narine et mon mors à tes lèvres, et je te ferai retourner par le chemin par lequel tu es venu.
And because thou ragest against me, and thy tumult is come vp to mine eares, I will put mine hooke in thy nostrels, and my bridle in thy lippes, and will bring thee backe againe the same way thou camest.
29 Et ceci sera un signe pour toi: On mangera cette année le produit du grain tombé; la seconde année, on mangera ce qui croît de soi-même; mais la troisième année, vous sèmerez et vous moissonnerez, vous planterez des vignes et vous en mangerez le fruit.
And this shalbe a signe vnto thee, O Hezekiah, Thou shalt eate this yeere such things as growe of them selues, and the next yeere such as growe without sowing, and the third yeere sowe ye and reape, and plant vineyardes, and eate the fruites thereof.
30 Ce qui aura été sauvé de la maison de Juda, ce qui restera, poussera encore des racines par-dessous, et portera du fruit par-dessus.
And the remnant that is escaped of the house of Iudah, shall againe take roote downewarde, and beare fruite vpwarde.
31 Car de Jérusalem il sortira un reste, et de la montagne de Sion des réchappés. Voilà ce que fera le zèle de Yahweh des armées.
For out of Ierusalem shall goe a remnant, and some that shall escape out of mount Zion: the zeale of the Lord of hostes shall doe this.
32 C’est pourquoi ainsi parle Yahweh sur le roi d’Assyrie: Il n’entrera pas dans cette ville, il n’y lancera pas de flèches, il ne lui présentera pas de boucliers, il n’élèvera pas de retranchements contre elle.
Wherefore thus saith the Lord, concerning the King of Asshur, He shall not enter into this citie, nor shoote an arrowe there, nor come before it with shield, nor cast a mount against it:
33 Il s’en retournera par le chemin par lequel il est venu, et il n’entrera pas dans cette ville, — oracle de Yahweh.
But he shall returne the way he came, and shall not come into this citie, saith the Lord.
34 Je protégerai cette ville pour la sauver, à cause de moi et à cause de David, mon serviteur. »
For I will defende this citie to saue it for mine owne sake, and for Dauid my seruants sake.
35 Cette nuit-là, l’ange de Yahweh sortit et frappa, dans le camp des Assyriens, cent quatre-vingt-cinq mille hommes; et quand on se leva le matin, voici que c’étaient tous des cadavres.
And the same night the Angell of the Lord went out and smote in the campe of Asshur an hundreth foure score and fiue thousande: so when they rose earely in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses.
36 Et Sennachérib, roi d’Assyrie, ayant levé son camp, partit et s’en retourna, et il resta à Ninive.
So Saneherib King of Asshur departed, and went his way, and returned, and dwelt in Nineueh.
37 Comme il était prosterné dans la maison de Nesroch, son dieu, Adramélech et Sarasar, ses fils, le frappèrent avec l’épée, et s’enfuirent au pays d’Ararat. Et Assarhaddon, son fils, régna à sa place.
And as he was in the Temple worshipping Nisroch his god, Adramelech and Sharezer his sonnes slewe him with the sworde: and they escaped into the land of Ararat, and Esarhaddon his sonne reigned in his steade.
