Romains 9
1 Je dis la vérité en Christ. Je ne mens pas, ma conscience m'attestant par le Saint-Esprit
I speak truth in Christ, I do not lie, my conscience bearing witness with me in the Holy Spirit, that
2 que j'ai dans le cœur une grande tristesse et une douleur incessante.
I have great grief and unceasing anguish in my heart.
3 Car je voudrais être moi-même maudit du Christ à cause de mes frères, mes parents selon la chair
For I could wish to be myself accursed and cast out from Christ in behalf of my brethren, my kinsmen as to the flesh;
4 qui sont Israélites; à qui appartiennent l'adoption, la gloire, les alliances, le don de la loi, le service et les promesses;
who are Israelites; whom God adopted as sons, whose was the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the Law, and the service of the sanctuary, and the promises;
5 dont sont les pères, et dont est issu le Christ selon la chair, qui est au-dessus de tout, Dieu, béni éternellement. Amen. (aiōn g165)
whose are the fathers, and from whom, as to the flesh, was the Christ. He who is over all, God, be blessed for ever! Amen. (aiōn g165)
6 Mais ce n'est pas comme si la parole de Dieu était restée sans effet. Car ce n'est pas tout Israël qui est d'Israël.
Not as though the word of God hath failed; for not all they that are of Israel are Israel;
7 Ils ne sont pas non plus tous des enfants, puisqu'ils sont la descendance d'Abraham. Mais « votre descendance sera comptée comme celle d'Isaac ».
nor because they are descendants of Abraham are they all children; but, “Thy offspring shall be reckoned from Isaac.”
8 C'est-à-dire que ce ne sont pas les enfants de la chair qui sont enfants de Dieu, mais les enfants de la promesse qui sont comptés comme héritiers.
That is, not the children by natural descent are children of God, but the children to whom the promise is made are accounted as the offspring.
9 Car voici la parole de la promesse: « Au temps fixé, je viendrai, et Sara aura un fils. »
For the word of promise is this: “At this time I will come, and Sarah shall have a son.”
10 Non seulement cela, mais Rebecca aussi a conçu par un seul, par notre père Isaac.
And not only so, but also when Rebecca had conceived by one man, our father Isaac,
11 Car, n'étant pas encore née, et n'ayant rien fait de bon ni de mauvais, afin que subsiste le dessein de Dieu selon l'élection, non des œuvres, mais de celui qui appelle,
before the children were born, or had done any thing good or evil, to the end that God's purpose according to election might stand, not depending on works, but on the will of him that calleth,
12 il lui fut dit: « L'aîné servira le cadet. »
it was said to her, “The elder shall serve the younger:”
13 Selon qu'il est écrit: « J'ai aimé Jacob, mais j'ai haï Ésaü. »
as it is written, “Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.”
14 Que dirons-nous donc? Y a-t-il de l'injustice devant Dieu? Qu'il n'y en ait jamais!
What then shall we say? Is there injustice with God? Far be it!
15 Car il a dit à Moïse: « J'aurai pitié de qui j'aurai pitié, et j'aurai compassion de qui j'aurai compassion. »
For he saith to Moses, “On whom I have mercy, on him will I have mercy; and on whom I have compassion, on him will I have compassion.”
16 Ainsi donc, ce n'est pas à celui qui veut, ni à celui qui court, mais à Dieu qui fait miséricorde.
So then it dependeth not on him that willeth, nor on him that runneth, but on God who showeth mercy.
17 Car l'Écriture dit à Pharaon: « C'est dans ce but que je t'ai suscité, afin de montrer en toi ma puissance et de proclamer mon nom par toute la terre. »
For the Scripture saith to Pharaoh, “For this very purpose did I raise thee up, that I might show forth my power in thee, and that my name might be made known in all the earth.”
18 Ainsi donc, il fait miséricorde à qui il veut, et il endurcit qui il veut.
So then he hath mercy on whom he will, and hardeneth whom he will.
19 Vous me direz alors: « Pourquoi trouve-t-il encore à redire? Car qui résiste à sa volonté? »
Hence thou wilt say to me, Why then doth he still find fault? for who resisteth his will?
20 Mais en vérité, ô homme, qui es-tu pour répondre contre Dieu? La chose formée demandera-t-elle à celui qui l'a formée: « Pourquoi m'as-tu fait ainsi? ».
Nay but, O man, who art thou that makest answer to God? Shall the thing that is wrought say to the workman, Why hast thou made me thus?
21 Ou bien le potier n'a-t-il pas un droit sur l'argile, à partir de la même masse, pour faire d'une partie un vase pour l'honneur, et d'une autre pour le déshonneur?
Hath not the potter a right out of the same lump of clay to make one vessel for an honorable use, and another for a dishonorable?
22 Et si Dieu, voulant montrer sa colère et faire connaître sa puissance, a supporté avec beaucoup de patience des vases de colère préparés pour la destruction,
What if God endured with much patience vessels of wrath fitted for destruction, purposing to manifest his wrath and to make known his power;
23 et qu'il a voulu faire connaître les richesses de sa gloire sur des vases de miséricorde, qu'il a préparés d'avance pour la gloire -
purposing also to make known the riches of his glory upon vessels of mercy, which he had before prepared for glory,
24 nous, qu'il a aussi appelés, non seulement des Juifs, mais aussi des païens?
whom he also called, even us, not only from among the Jews, but also from among the gentiles?
25 Comme il le dit aussi dans Osée, « Je les appellerai 'mon peuple', eux qui n'étaient pas mon peuple; et sa « bien-aimée », qui n'était pas bien-aimée. »
as he also saith in Hosea, “I will call that my people, which was not my people; and her beloved, that was not beloved.
26 « Dans le lieu où il leur a été dit: « Vous n'êtes pas mon peuple ». ils seront appelés « enfants du Dieu vivant ». »
And it shall be, that in the place where it was said to them, Ye are not my people, there shall they be called sons of the living God.”
27 Ésaïe crie à propos d'Israël, « Si le nombre des enfants d'Israël est comme le sable de la mer, c'est le reste qui sera sauvé;
But Isaiah crieth out concerning Israel, “Though the number of the sons of Israel be as the sand of the sea, only the remnant will be saved.
28 car il achèvera l'œuvre et la coupera dans la justice, parce que l'Éternel fera une courte œuvre sur la terre. »
For he is accomplishing his word and speedily fulfilling it in righteousness; for a speedily fulfilled word will the Lord execute upon the earth.”
29 Comme l'a déjà dit Ésaïe, « A moins que le Seigneur des Armées ne nous ait laissé une graine, nous serions devenus comme Sodome, et aurait été rendu comme Gomorrah. »
And as Isaiah hath said before, “Unless the Lord of hosts had left us a seed, we should have become as Sodom, and been made like Gomorrah.”
30 Que dirons-nous donc? Que les païens, qui ne cherchaient pas la justice, sont parvenus à la justice, à la justice de la foi;
What then shall we say? That the gentiles, who did not strive after righteousness, obtained righteousness, but a righteousness which is of faith;
31 mais qu'Israël, qui cherchait une loi de justice, n'est pas parvenu à la loi de justice.
while Israel, which strove after a law of righteousness, did not attain to a law of righteousness.
32 Pourquoi? Parce qu'ils ne l'ont pas cherchée par la foi, mais pour ainsi dire par les œuvres de la loi. Ils ont trébuché sur la pierre d'achoppement,
Why? Because they did not strive for it by faith, but as being by works. For they stumbled against the stone of stumbling;
33 selon qu'il est écrit, « Voici que je pose en Sion une pierre d'achoppement et un rocher de scandale; et aucun de ceux qui croient en lui ne sera déçu. »
as it is written, “Behold, I lay in Zion a stone of stumbling and rock of offence; and he that believeth in him shall not be put to shame.”
