Jonas 4
1 Mais cela déplut fortement à Jonas, qui se mit en colère.
But this displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was very angry.
2 Il pria Yahvé et dit: « Je t'en prie, Yahvé, n'est-ce pas ce que j'ai dit quand j'étais encore dans mon pays? C'est pourquoi je me suis hâté de fuir à Tarsis, car je savais que tu es un Dieu miséricordieux et compatissant, lent à la colère et riche en bonté, et que tu ne fais pas de mal.
And he prayed to Jehovah and said, Ah! Jehovah, was not this what I said, when I was yet in my own country? Therefore I made haste to flee to Tarshish. For I knew that thou art a gracious and merciful God, slow to anger and abundant in mercy, and that thou repentest of a threatened evil.
3 C'est pourquoi maintenant, Yahvé, enlève-moi la vie, je t'en supplie, car il vaut mieux pour moi mourir que vivre. »
And now, O Jehovah, take, I pray thee, my life from me! for it is better for me to die than to live.
4 Yahvé dit: « Est-ce que tu as raison de te mettre en colère? »
And Jehovah said, Is it right that thou shouldst be angry?
5 Alors Jonas sortit de la ville et s'assit à l'est de la ville; il se fit une tente et s'assit dessous à l'ombre, jusqu'à ce qu'il puisse voir ce qu'il adviendrait de la ville.
Now Jonah had gone out of the city, and had sat on the east side of the city, and had made himself a booth there, and had sat under it in the shade, till he should see what would become of the city.
6 Yahvé Dieu prépara une vigne et la fit monter au-dessus de Jonas, afin qu'elle soit un ombrage sur sa tête et le délivre de son malaise. Et Jonas se réjouit beaucoup à cause de la vigne.
And God, Jehovah, appointed a gourd; and it grew up over Jonah to be a shadow over his head, to deliver him from his distress. And Jonah was exceedingly glad of the gourd.
7 Mais le lendemain, à l'aube, Dieu prépara un ver qui rongea la vigne et la fit se dessécher.
But God appointed a worm when the morning rose the next day, and it smote the gourd so that it withered.
8 Lorsque le soleil se leva, Dieu prépara un vent d'est très fort, et le soleil frappa la tête de Jonas, qui se sentit faible et demanda à mourir. Il dit: « Il vaut mieux pour moi mourir que vivre. »
And when the sun arose, God appointed a sultry east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah, and he was faint, and he asked for himself death, and said, It is better for me to die than to live.
9 Dieu dit à Jonas: « Est-ce bien que tu sois en colère contre la vigne? » Il a dit: « J'ai le droit d'être en colère, même jusqu'à la mort. »
And God said to Jonah, Is it right that thou shouldst be angry for the gourd? And he said, It is right that I should be angry even to death.
10 L'Éternel dit: « Tu t'es préoccupé de la vigne, pour laquelle tu n'as pas travaillé et que tu n'as pas fait croître, qui est montée en une nuit et qui a péri en une nuit.
And Jehovah said, Thou hast had pity on the gourd for which thou hast not labored, and which thou madest not to grow, which grew up in a night and perished in a night;
11 Nedevrais-je pas m'inquiéter de Ninive, cette grande ville, dans laquelle il y a plus de cent vingt mille personnes qui ne savent pas distinguer leur main droite de leur main gauche, et aussi beaucoup d'animaux? ».
and should not I spare Nineveh, the great city, wherein are more than a hundred and twenty thousand persons that cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand, and also many cattle?
