Isaïe 10
1 Malheur à ceux qui décrètent des ordonnances injustes, Et aux rédacteurs qui écrivent des ordonnances oppressives
Woe to them that make unrighteous decrees, That write oppressive decisions,
2 pour priver de justice les indigents, Et pour dépouiller de leurs droits les pauvres de mon peuple, Afin que les veuves soient leur butin, Et qu'ils fassent de l'orphelin leur proie!
To turn away the needy from judgment, And rob the poor of my people of their right; That the widows may become their prey, And that they may plunder the orphans.
3 Que ferez-vous au jour du châtiment, au jour de la désolation qui viendra de loin? Vers qui fuiras-tu pour demander du secours? Où laisserez-vous vos richesses?
What will ye do in the day of visitation, And in the desolation which cometh from afar? To whom will ye flee for help, And where will ye leave your glory?
4 Ils ne se prosterneront que sous les prisonniers, et tomberont sous les morts. Pour autant, sa colère n'est pas détournée, mais sa main est encore tendue.
Forsaken by me, they shall sink down among the prisoners, And fall among the slain. For all this his anger is not turned away, But his hand is stretched out still.
5 Hélas Assyrien, la verge de ma colère, le bâton dans la main duquel est ma fureur!
Woe to the Assyrian, the rod of mine anger, The staff in whose hands is the instrument of my indignation!
6 Je l'envoie contre une nation profane, et contre le peuple qui m'irrite, je lui donne l'ordre de prendre le pillage et le butin, et de les fouler comme la boue des rues.
Against an impious nation I will send him, And against a people under my wrath I will give him a charge To gather the spoil, and seize the prey, And to trample them under foot like the mire of the streets.
7 Mais ce n'est pas ce qu'il veut, et ce n'est pas ce que son cœur pense; mais il a dans le cœur de détruire, et d'exterminer non pas quelques nations.
But he doth not so purpose, And his heart doth not so intend; But to destroy is in his heart, And to cut off a multitude of nations.
8 Car il dit: « Tous mes princes ne sont-ils pas des rois?
For he saith, “Are not my princes altogether kings?
9 Calno n'est-elle pas comme Carménich? Hamath n`est-elle pas comme Arpad? Samarie n'est-elle pas comme Damas? »
Is not Calno as Carchemish? Is not Hamath as Arpad? Is not Samaria as Damascus?
10 Comme ma main a trouvé les royaumes des idoles, dont les images gravées dépassaient celles de Jérusalem et de Samarie,
As my hand hath seized the kingdoms of the idols, Whose graven images were more numerous than those of Jerusalem and Samaria,
11 ne ferai-je pas, comme j'ai fait à Samarie et à ses idoles, à Jérusalem et à ses idoles?
Behold! as I have done to Samaria and her idols, So will I do to Jerusalem and her images.”
12 C'est pourquoi, lorsque l'Éternel aura accompli toute son œuvre sur la montagne de Sion et sur Jérusalem, je punirai le fruit du cœur orgueilleux et volontaire du roi d'Assyrie, et l'insolence de ses regards arrogants.
But when the Lord hath accomplished his whole work upon Mount Zion and Jerusalem, Then will he punish the fruit of the proud heart of the king of Assyria, And the arrogance of his lofty eyes.
13 Car il a dit: « C'est par la force de ma main que j'ai agi, et par ma sagesse, car j'ai de l'intelligence. J'ai fait disparaître les limites des peuples, et j'ai dérobé leurs trésors. Comme un vaillant homme, j'ai abattu leurs chefs.
For he hath said: “By the strength of my hand I have done it, And by my wisdom; for I am wise; I have removed the bounds of nations, I have plundered their treasures; As a hero have I brought down them that sat upon thrones.
14 Ma main a trouvé les richesses des peuples comme un nid, et comme on recueille des œufs abandonnés, j'ai recueilli toute la terre. Il n'y en a pas un qui ait remué l'aile, qui ait ouvert la bouche, ou qui ait gazouillé. »
The riches of the nations hath my hand seized, as a nest; As one gathereth eggs that have been left, So have I gathered the whole world. And there was none that moved the wing, Or that opened the beak, or that chirped.”
15 La hache se vante-t-elle de celui qui coupe? La scie doit-elle s'élever au-dessus de celui qui la scie? Comme si une verge devait élever ceux qui la soulèvent, ou comme si un bâton devait élever quelqu'un qui n'est pas du bois.
Shall the axe boast itself against him that heweth with it? Or shall the saw magnify itself against him that moveth it? As if the rod should wield him that lifteth it! As if the staff should lift up him that is not wood!
16 C'est pourquoi l'Éternel, l'Éternel des armées, enverra parmi ses gros la maigreur, et sous sa gloire s'allumera une ardeur comme celle d'un feu.
Wherefore the Lord, the Lord of hosts, shall send upon his fat ones leanness, And under his glory shall he kindle a burning, like the burning of a fire.
17 La lumière d'Israël sera comme un feu, et son Saint comme une flamme; et il brûlera et dévorera ses épines et ses ronces en un seul jour.
The light of Israel shall be a fire, And his Holy One a flame, Which shall burn and devour his thorns and briers in one day.
18 Il consumera la gloire de sa forêt et de son champ fertile, l'âme et le corps. Ce sera comme lorsqu'un porte-étendard s'évanouit.
The glory of his forest and of his fruitful field From the spirit even to the flesh shall he consume; It shall be with them as when a sick man fainteth.
19 Le reste des arbres de sa forêt sera peu nombreux, au point qu'un enfant pourrait écrire leur nombre.
The remaining trees of the forest shall be few, So that a child may write them down.
20 En ce jour-là, le reste d'Israël et les réchappés de la maison de Jacob ne s'appuieront plus sur celui qui les frappait, mais ils s'appuieront sur Yahvé, le Saint d'Israël, dans la vérité.
In that day shall the remnant of Israel, and they that have escaped of the house of Jacob, no more lean upon him that smote them; They shall lean upon Jehovah, the Holy One of Israel, in truth.
21 Un reste reviendra, le reste de Jacob, vers le Dieu puissant.
The remnant shall return, the remnant of Jacob, to the mighty Potentate;
22 Car si ton peuple, Israël, est comme le sable de la mer, un reste seulement reviendra. Une destruction est prévue, débordante de justice.
For though thy people, O Israel, be as the sand of the sea, Only a remnant of them shall return. The devastation is decreed; It shall overflow with righteousness.
23 Car l'Éternel, le Yahvé des armées, fera une destruction complète, et déterminée, sur toute la terre.
For devastation and punishment doth the Lord, Jehovah of hosts, execute in the midst of the whole land,
24 C'est pourquoi l'Éternel, le Yahvé des armées, dit: « Mon peuple qui habite Sion, ne craignez pas l'Assyrien, même s'il vous frappe de sa verge et qu'il lève son bâton contre vous, comme l'Égypte.
Yet thus saith the Lord, Jehovah of hosts: Fear not, O my people, that dwellest in Zion, because of the Assyrian! With his rod indeed shall he smite thee, And lift up his staff against thee in the manner of Egypt;
25 Car encore un tout petit moment, et l'indignation contre vous s'accomplira, et ma colère se portera sur sa destruction. »
But yet a very little while, and my indignation shall have past, And my anger shall destroy them.
26 Yahvé des armées suscitera contre lui un fléau, comme lors du massacre de Madian au rocher d'Oreb. Sa verge sera au-dessus de la mer, et il la lèvera comme il l'a fait contre l'Égypte.
Jehovah of hosts shall raise up against him a scourge, As he smote Midian at the rock of Horeb, And as he lifted up the rod against the sea; Yea, he shall lift it up, as in Egypt.
27 En ce jour-là, son fardeau disparaîtra de ton épaule, et son joug de ton cou, et le joug sera détruit à cause de l'huile d'onction.
In that day shall his burden be removed from thy shoulder, And his yoke from thy neck; Yea, thy yoke shall be broken, as that of a fat steer.
28 Il est arrivé à Aiath. Il passe par Migron. A Michmash, il range ses bagages.
He is come to Aiath; he passeth through Migron; In Michmash he leaveth his baggage;
29 Ils ont franchi le col. Ils se logent à Guéba. Rama tremble. Gibéa de Saül s'est enfuie.
They pass the strait; At Geba they make their night-quarters; Ramah trembleth; Gibeah of Saul fleeth.
30 Crie de ta voix, fille de Gallim! Écoute, Laisha! Pauvre Anathoth!
Cry aloud, O daughter of Gallim! Hear, O Laish! Alas, poor Anathoth!
31 Madmena est une fugitive. Les habitants de Guébim fuient pour se mettre en sûreté.
Madmenah hasteth away; The inhabitants of Gebim take to flight.
32 Aujourd'hui même, il s'arrête à Nob. Il serre la main à la montagne de la fille de Sion, à la colline de Jérusalem.
Yet one day shall he rest at Nob, Then shall he shake his hand against the mount of the daughter of Zion, The hill of Jerusalem.
33 Voici que le Seigneur, l'Éternel des armées, fauche les rameaux avec terreur. Les grands seront abattus, et les grands seront abaissés.
But behold! the Lord, Jehovah of hosts, shall lop the branches with fearful force, And the high of stature shall be cut down, And the lofty shall be brought low.
34 Ilabattra avec le fer les fourrés de la forêt, et le Liban tombera sous les coups du Puissant.
He shall hew the thickets of the forest with iron, And Lebanon shall fall by a mighty hand.
