Deutéronome 20
1 Lorsque tu sortiras pour combattre tes ennemis, et que tu verras des chevaux, des chars et un peuple plus nombreux que toi, tu ne les craindras pas, car l'Éternel, ton Dieu, qui t'a fait monter du pays d'Égypte, est avec toi.
When thou shalt go out to wage war against thine enemy, and shalt see the horses and chariots of a people more in number than thou, thou shalt not be afraid of them, —for, Yahweh thy God, is with thee, who brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.
2 Lorsque vous approcherez de la bataille, le prêtre s'approchera et parlera au peuple,
And it shall be, when ye are coming nigh unto the battle, that the priest shall approach and speak unto the people;
3 et il lui dira: « Écoute, Israël, tu t'approches aujourd'hui de la bataille contre tes ennemis. Que ton cœur ne s'affaiblisse pas! N'aie pas peur, ne tremble pas et n'aie pas peur d'eux;
and shall say unto them, —Hear, O Israel, ye are coming near to-day, unto battle against your enemies, —let not your heart faint do not fear nor start nor quake because of them.
4 car Yahvé ton Dieu est celui qui marche avec toi, pour combattre pour toi contre tes ennemis, pour te sauver. »
For Yahweh your God, is he that is going with you, —to fight for you against your enemies to save you.
5 Les officiers parleront au peuple, en disant: « Quel est l'homme qui a construit une maison neuve et qui ne l'a pas consacrée? Qu'il aille et retourne dans sa maison, de peur qu'il ne meure dans la bataille et qu'un autre ne la dédie.
Then shall the officers speak unto the people saying, Who is the man that hath built a new house and hath not dedicated it? let him go and return unto his house, —lest he die in the battle, and, another man dedicate it.
6 Quel est l'homme qui a planté une vigne, et qui n'en a pas utilisé le fruit? Qu'il s'en aille et retourne dans sa maison, de peur qu'il ne meure dans la bataille, et qu'un autre n'en utilise le fruit.
And who is the man that hath planted a vineyard and hath not thrown it open? let him go and return unto his house, —lest he die in the battle, and another man, throw it open.
7 Quel est l'homme qui s'est engagé à épouser une femme, et qui ne l'a pas prise? Qu'il aille et retourne dans sa maison, de peur qu'il ne meure dans la bataille et qu'un autre homme ne la prenne. »
And who is the man that hath betrothed a wife and hath not taken her? let him go and return unto his house, —lest he die in the battle, and, another man, take her.
8 Les officiers parleront encore au peuple, et ils diront: « Quel est l'homme qui a peur et qui est pusillanime? Qu'il s'en aille et retourne dans sa maison, de peur que le cœur de son frère ne se fonde comme son cœur. »
Then shall the officers further speak unto the people, and say—Who is the man that is fearful and faint-hearted? let him go and return unto his house, —lest his brethren’s heart melt as well as his heart.
9 Lorsque les officiers auront fini de parler au peuple, ils nommeront des chefs d'armée à la tête du peuple.
And it shall be, when the officers have made an end of speaking unto the people, then shall they appoint captains of hosts at the head of the people.
10 Lorsque vous vous approchez d'une ville pour la combattre, annoncez-lui la paix.
When thou shalt come nigh unto a city, to fight against it, —then shalt thou proclaim unto it—peace,
11 Si elle te donne une réponse de paix et s'ouvre à toi, tous les habitants qui s'y trouvent deviendront tes travailleurs forcés et te serviront.
and it shall be if peace, be the answer it giveth thee, and it open unto thee, then shall it be, that, all the people that are found therein, shall become thy tributaries and shall serve thee.
12 S'il ne veut pas faire la paix avec toi, mais te faire la guerre, tu l'assiégeras.
But if it will not make peace with thee, but will make war with thee, then shalt thou lay siege to it;
13 Lorsque Yahvé, ton Dieu, la livrera entre tes mains, tu en frapperas tous les mâles du tranchant de l'épée.
and Yahweh thy God will deliver it into thy hand, —and thou shalt smite every male thereof with the edge of the sword;
14 Mais tu prendras pour toi les femmes, les petits enfants, le bétail, tout ce qui se trouve dans la ville et tout son butin. Tu pourras utiliser le butin de tes ennemis, que Yahvé ton Dieu t'a donné.
but the women and the little ones and the cattle and all that shall be in the city—all the spoil thereof, shalt thou take as thy prey, —so shalt thou eat the spoil of thine enemies, whom Yahweh thy God hath delivered unto thee.
15 Tu feras ainsi à toutes les villes qui sont très éloignées de toi et qui ne font pas partie des villes de ces peuples.
Thus, shalt thou do unto all the cities that are very far away from thee, —which are not of the cities of those nations.
16 Mais parmi les villes de ces peuples que l'Éternel, ton Dieu, te donne en héritage, tu ne sauveras rien de ce qui respire,
But of the cities of these peoples which Yahweh thy God is giving unto thee as an inheritance, shalt thou not save alive, any breathing thing.
17 mais tu les dévoueras par interdit, le Héthien, l'Amoréen, le Cananéen, le Phérézien, le Hévien et le Jébusien, comme l'Éternel, ton Dieu, te l'a ordonné,
But thou shalt devote them to destruction—the Hittites and the Amorites the Canaanites and the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, —as Yahweh thy God hath commanded thee:
18 afin qu'ils ne t'apprennent pas à suivre toutes leurs abominations, qu'ils ont faites pour leurs dieux, et que tu ne pèches pas contre l'Éternel, ton Dieu.
lest they teach you to do, according to all their abominations, which they have done unto their gods, —and so ye sin against Yahweh your God.
19 Lorsque tu assiégeras une ville pendant une longue période, en lui faisant la guerre pour la prendre, tu ne détruiras pas ses arbres en maniant la hache contre eux, car tu pourras en manger. Tu ne les couperas pas, car l'arbre des champs est-il un homme, pour que tu l'assailles?
When thou shalt besiege a city for many days to fight against it, to take it, thou shalt not destroy the trees thereof by wielding against them an axe, when of them, thou mightest eat, them, there-fore shalt thou not cut down, —for, Is the tree of the field, a man, that it should enter, because of thee into the siege?
20 Seuls les arbres dont tu sais qu'ils ne sont pas destinés à la nourriture, tu les détruiras et tu les couperas. Tu construiras des remparts contre la ville qui te fait la guerre, jusqu'à ce qu'elle tombe.
Nevertheless, the tree of which thou knowest that it is, not a tree yielding food, the same, mayest thou destroy, and cut down, —and so build up a siege-work against the city which is making war with thee, until thou hast subdued it.
