1 Fia Herod se Yesu ŋkɔ
At that time Prince Herod heard of the fame of Jesus,
2 ale wògblɔ na eƒe amewo be, “Edze ƒãa be Yohanes Mawutsidetanamelae gagbɔ agbe, eya ta wòte ŋu le nukunu geɖe siawo wɔm ɖo.”
and said to his attendants: “This must be John the Baptist; he must be risen from the dead, and that is why these miraculous powers are active in him.”
3 Azɔ la, Herod na wolé Yohanes, eye woblae de gaxɔ me le Herod, nɔvia Filipo srɔ̃ ta,
For Herod had arrested John, put him in chains, and shut him up in prison, to please Herodias, the wife of Herod’s brother Philip.
4 elabena Yohanes he nya ɖe Herod ŋu be mele se nu be wòaxɔ nɔvia Filipo srɔ̃ aɖe o.
For John had said to him ‘You have no right to be living with her.’
5 Herod di be yeawu Yohanes, gake enɔ vɔvɔ̃m be ʋunyaʋunya ava dzɔ, elabena amewo katã xɔe se be Yohanes nye nyagblɔɖila.
Yet, though Herod wanted to put him to death, he was afraid of the people, because they looked on John as a Prophet.
6 Gbe ɖeka la, Herod nɔ dzigbezã ɖum, eye Herod ƒe vinyɔnuvi va ɖu ɣe le ame kpekpeawo ŋkume. Eƒe ɣeɖuɖu nya kpɔ na Herod ŋutɔ,
But, when Herod’s birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced before his guests, and so pleased Herod,
7 eya ta edo ŋugbe be yeana nu sia nu si nyɔnuvi la abia ye lae.
that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked.
8 Nyɔnuvia bia nu si wòabia la dadaa. Dadaa gblɔ nɛ be nebia Yohanes Mawutsidetanamela ƒe ta. Ale wòva do ɖe fia gbɔ gblɔ nɛ be, “Mele Yohanes Mawutsidetanamela ƒe ta dim le agba me.”
Prompted by her mother, the girl said ‘Give me here, on a dish, the head of John the Baptist.’
9 Nya sia te ɖe fia la dzi ŋutɔ, gake le atam si wòka ta la, medi be yeaɖu ŋukpe le eƒe ame kpekpeawo ŋkume o, ale wòɖe gbe be woatso ta le Yohanes nu akɔ vɛ.
The king was distressed at this; yet, on account of his oath and of the guests at his table, he ordered it to be given her.
10 Ale woyi ɖatso ta le Yohanes nu le gaxɔ me,
He sent and beheaded John in the prison;
11 tsɔ de agba me tsɔ vɛ na nyɔnuvi la, eye wòkɔe yi na dadaa.
and his head was brought on a dish and given to the girl, and she took it to her mother.
12 Yohanes ƒe nusrɔ̃lawo se nya la, eye woyi ɖaxɔ eƒe kukua ɖaɖi. Emegbe la, woyi ɖaka nya la ta na Yesu.
Then John’s disciples came, and took the body away, and buried it; and went and told Jesus.
13 Esi Yesu se nya sia la, eya ɖeka ge ɖe ʋu aɖe me dzo le afi ma, eye wòyi ɖaɣla eɖokui ɖe teƒe tsoabo aɖe. Ke ameawo kpɔ afi si wòɖo tae la, eya ta wo dometɔ geɖewo tso kɔƒe vovovowo me to afɔ dze eyome.
When Jesus heard of it, he retired privately in a boat to a lonely spot. The people, however, heard of his going, and followed him in crowds from the towns on foot.
14 Ale esi wotrɔ va ƒua ta la, ekpɔ be ame gbogbo aɖewo nɔ ye lalam. Woƒe nu wɔ nublanui nɛ ŋutɔ, eya ta eda gbe le dɔnɔ siwo le wo dome la ŋu.
On getting out of the boat, Jesus saw a great crowd, and his heart was moved at the sight of them; and he cured all the sick among them.
15 Esi zã nɔ dodom la, eƒe nusrɔ̃lawo va egbɔ va gblɔ nɛ be, “Afi sia la, gbedzie; naneke meli ame naɖu o, evɔ la, fiẽnuɖuɣi va yi xoxo, eya ta ɖe asi le ameha la ŋu ne woayi kɔƒe siwo te ɖe afi sia ŋu la me aɖaƒle nuɖuɖu.”
In the evening the disciples came up to him, and said: “This is a lonely spot, and the day is now far advanced; send the crowds away, that they may go to the villages, and buy themselves food.”
16 Yesu ɖo eŋu na wo be, “Mehiã be woayi aɖaƒle nuɖuɖu o, miawo midi nuɖuɖu na wo woaɖu!”
But Jesus said: “They need not go away, it is for you to give them something to eat.”
17 Nusrɔ̃lawo do ɣli gblɔ be, “Nu ka, abolo atɔ̃ kple tɔmelã eve pɛ koe le mía si le afi sia!”
“We have nothing here,” they said, “except five loaves and two fishes.”
18 Yesu gblɔ na wo be, “Mitsɔ wo vɛ.”
“Bring them here to me,” was his reply.
19 Azɔ ebia tso ameha la si be woanɔ anyi ɖe gbea dzi. Ale wòtsɔ abolo atɔ̃ kple tɔmelã eve la, eye wòwu mo dzi hedo gbe ɖa ɖe wo dzi. Emegbe la, eŋe wo me tsɔ na nusrɔ̃lawo be woama na ameawo.
Jesus ordered the people to take their seats on the grass; and, taking the five loaves and the two fishes, he looked up to Heaven, and said the blessing, and, after he had broken the loaves, gave them to his disciples; and they gave them to the crowds.
20 Ame sia ame ɖu nu ɖi ƒo nyuie, eye esi woƒo nuɖuɖu wuwlui mamlɛawo nu ƒu la, woyɔ kusi wuieve sɔŋ.
Every one had sufficient to eat, and they picked up enough of the broken pieces that were left to fill twelve baskets.
21 Ame siwo ɖu nua la ƒe xexlẽme nɔ ŋutsu akpe atɔ̃, nyɔnuwo kple ɖeviwo mele eme o.
The men who ate were about five thousand in number, without counting women and children.
22 Le esia megbe la, Yesu gblɔ na nusrɔ̃lawo be woage ɖe ʋua me atso ƒu la, ke ye la, yeanɔ anyi ado mɔ ameha la woayi aƒe me.
Immediately afterwards Jesus made the disciples get into a boat and cross over in advance of him, while he dismissed the crowds.
23 Esi wòdo mɔ ameawo wodzo vɔ la, eya ɖeka yi togbɛawo dzi be yeado gbe ɖa. Enɔ teƒe sia va se ɖe fiẽ me,
After dismissing the crowds, he went up the hill by himself to pray; and, when evening fell, he was there alone.
24 ke afi si tɔdziʋu la ɖo la didi tso gota gbɔ, eye ƒutsotsoewo nɔ enyamam, elabena ya nɔ ƒoƒom henɔ ʋu la kpem.
The boat was by this time some miles from shore, labouring in the waves, for the wind was against her.
25 Anɔ abe fɔŋli ga ene me lɔƒo ene la, Yesu zɔ ƒua dzi yina wo gbɔ.
Three hours after midnight, however, Jesus came towards the disciples, walking on the water.
26 Esi nusrɔ̃lawo kpɔe wònɔ ƒua dzi zɔm la, vɔvɔ̃ ɖo wo. Tete wodo ɣli be, “Ŋɔlie.”
But, when they saw him walking on the water, they were terrified. “It is a ghost,” they exclaimed, and cried out for fear.
27 Yesu ƒo nu na wo enumake, eye wòde dzi ƒo na wo gblɔ be, “Nyee, migavɔ̃ o; miaƒe dzi nedze eme.”
But Jesus at once spoke to them. “Courage!” he said, “It is I; do not be afraid!”
28 Petro gblɔ nɛ be, “Aƒetɔ, nenye wò tututue la, na nye hã mazɔ tsia dzi ava gbɔwò.”
“Master,” Peter exclaimed, “if it is you, tell me to come to you on the water.”
29 Yesu gblɔ nɛ be, “Enyo, zɔ va.” Ale Petro ɖi ɖe tsia me le ʋua xa, eye wòzɔ tsia dzi ɖo ta Yesu gbɔ.
And Jesus said: “Come.” So Peter got down from the boat, and walked on the water, and went towards Jesus;
30 Ke esi wònye kɔ kpɔ ale si ƒutsotsoeawo nɔ nyanyram la, vɔvɔ̃ ɖoe, eye wode asi toyiyi me. Ale wòdo ɣli sesĩe be, “Aƒetɔ, ɖem!”
but, when he felt the wind, he was frightened, and, beginning to sink, cried out: “Master! Save me!”
31 Yesu do asi ɖa enumake, eye wòhee ɖe go. Azɔ egblɔ nɛ be, “O, wò xɔse ʋɛ tɔ, nu ka ta nèke ɖi mahã?”
Instantly Jesus stretched out his hand, and caught hold of him. “O man of little faith!” he said, “Why did you falter?”
32 Esi ame eveawo ge ɖe ʋua me ko la, yaƒoƒo la tɔ zi ɖeka.
When they had got into the boat, the wind dropped.
33 Nusrɔ̃la mamlɛa siwo le tɔdziʋua me la dze klo nɛ hegblɔ nɛ be, “Mawu ƒe Vie nènye vavã!”
But the men in the boat threw themselves on their faces before him, and said: “You are indeed God’s Son.”
34 Azɔ wotso ƒu la va do ɖe Genesaretnyigba la dzi.
When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret.
35 Woƒe vava ɖi hoo le dua katã me. Amewo kpɔ Yesu dze sii, eye wonɔ tsatsam nɔ gbeƒã ɖem be amewo nakplɔ woƒe dɔnɔwo vɛ wòada gbe le wo ŋu.
But the people of that place, recognising Jesus, sent out to the whole country round, and brought to him all who were ill,
36 Dɔnɔ aɖewo va ɖe kuku na Yesu be yewoaka asi eƒe awu to ko, eye ame siwo katã ka asi eƒe awu to la kpɔ dɔyɔyɔ.
begging him merely to let them touch the tassel of his cloak; and all who touched were made perfectly well.
