Genesis 18
1 Forsothe in the valei of Mambre the Lord apperide to Abraham, sittynge in the dore of his tabernacle, in thilke heete of the dai.
Et Dieu lui apparut près du chêne de Membré, tandis qu'il était assis sur la porte de sa tente à midi.
2 And whanne he hadde reisid his iyen, thre men apperiden to hym, and stoden nyy hym. And whanne he hadde seyn hem, he ran fro the dore of his tabernacle in to the meting of hem, and he worschipide on erthe,
Comme il levait les yeux, il aperçut trois hommes placés au-dessus de lui; et les ayant vus, il courut de la porte de sa tente à leur rencontre, et il se prosterna jusqu'à terre,
3 and seide, Lord, if Y haue founde grace in thin iyen, passe thou not thi seruaunt,
En disant: Seigneur, si j'ai trouvé grâce devant vous, ne passez point outre devant votre serviteur.
4 but I schal brynge a litil watir, and youre feet be waischid, and reste ye vndur the tre;
Que l'on prépare l'eau, que mes serviteurs vous lavent les pieds et rafraîchissez-vous sous le chêne.
5 and Y schal sette a mussel of breed, and youre herte be coumfortid; aftirward ye schulen passe; for herfor ye bowiden to youre seruaunt. Whiche seiden, Do thou as thou hast spoke.
Pour moi, j'apporterai du pain, et vous mangerez; puis, vous poursuivrez votre voyage: c'est pour cela que vous êtes venus vers votre serviteur. Le Seigneur dit: Qu'il soit fait comme tu le demandes.
6 Abraham hastide in to the tabernacle, to Sare, and seide to hir, Hast thou, meddle thou thre half buschelis of clene flour; and make thou looues bakun vndur aischis.
Abraham se hâta donc d'entrer sous sa tente vers Sarra, et il lui dit: Dépêche-toi, pétris trois mesures de fleur de farine, et fais-nous cuire des pains sous la cendre.
7 Forsothe he ran to the droue of beestis, and took therof a calf moost tendre and best, and yaf to a child, which hastide, and sethede the calfe;
Puis, Abraham courut aux bœufs, et prit un beau petit veau bien tendre, qu'il donna au serviteur, en le pressant de l'apprêter.
8 and he took botere, and mylk, and the calf which he hadde sode, and settide bifore hem; forsothe Abraham stood bisidis hem vndur the tre.
De son côté, il prit du beurre et du lait, ainsi que le veau qu'il avait fait préparer, et il plaça le tout devant ses hôtes qui mangèrent. Lui-même cependant se tenait devant eux sous le chêne.
9 And whanne thei hadden ete, thei seiden to hym, Where is Sare thi wijf? He answerde, Lo! sche is in the tabernacle.
Le Seigneur lui dit: Où est Sarra ta femme? Il répondit: La voici sous la tente.
10 To whom the Lord seide, Y schal turne ayen, and Y schal come to thee in this tyme, if Y lyue; and Sare, thi wijf, schal haue a sone. Whanne this was herd, Sare leiyede bihynde the dore of the tabernacle.
Je reviendrai, dit le Seigneur, vers toi à pareille époque, et Sarra ta femme aura un fils. Or, Sarra entendit derrière la porte de la tente où elle était.
11 Forsothe bothe weren olde, and of greet age, and wommans termes ceessiden to be maad to Sare.
Or, Abraham et Sarra étaient vieux, ayant vécu bien des jours; Sarra avait même cessé d'avoir ce qui arrive aux femmes.
12 And she leiyede, seiynge pryueli, after that Y wexede eld, and my lord is eld, schal Y yyue diligence to lust?
Sarra rit donc en elle-même, disant: Cela ne m'est point encore arrivé jusqu'ici, et mon seigneur est un vieillard.
13 Forsothe the Lord seide to Abraham, Whi leiyeth Sare, thi wijf, seiynge, whether Y an eld womman schal bere child verili?
Mais le Seigneur dit à Abraham: Pourquoi Sarra a-t-elle ri en elle-même, disant: Enfanterai-je véritablement, moi qui suis devenue vieille?
14 whether ony thing is hard to God? Bi the biheeste Y schal turne ayen to thee in this same tyme, if Y lyue; and Sara schal haue a sone.
Est-ce que rien est impossible à Dieu? Je reviendrai près de toi à pareille époque, et Sarra aura un fils.
15 Sare was aferd for drede, and denyede, seiynge, Y leiyede not. Forsothe the Lord seide, It is not so, but thou leiyedist.
Alors Sarra nia, disant: Je n'ai point ri, car elle eut peur; et le Seigneur lui dit: Non, mais tu as ri.
16 Therfor whanne the men hadden risen fro thennus, thei dressiden the iyen ayens Sodom; and Abraham yede to gidre, ledynge hem forth.
Et, s'étant levés de ce lieu, les trois hommes regardèrent du côté de Sodome et de Gomorrhe, et Abraham partit avec eux pour les reconduire.
17 And the Lord seide, Wher Y mowe hele fro Abraham what thingis Y schal do,
Bientôt le Seigneur dit: Ne dévoilerai-je point les choses que je fais à Abraham, mon serviteur,
18 sithen he schal be in to a greet folk and moost strong, and alle naciouns of erthe schulen be blessid in hym?
A lui qui doit devenir père d'une nation grande et nombreuse, et en qui seront bénies toutes les nations de la terre?
19 For Y woot that Abraham schal comaunde hise children, and his hows after hym, that thei kepe the weie of the Lord, and that thei do riytfulnesse and dom, that the Lord bringe for Abraham alle thingis whiche he spak to Abraham.
Car je sais qu'il donnera ses ordres à ses fils et à sa maison après lui; et ils garderont les voies du Seigneur en pratiquant l'équité et la justice, afin que le Seigneur accomplisse, en faveur d'Abraham, toutes les choses qu'il lui a dites.
20 And so the Lord seide, The cry of men of Sodom and of men of Gomorre is multiplied, and her synne is agreggid greetli; Y schal come doun,
Le Seigneur ajouta: Le cri de Sodome et de Gomorrhe s'est élevé jusqu'à moi, et leurs péchés sont énormes.
21 and schal se whether thei han fillid in werk the cry that cam to me, that Y wite whether it is not so.
Étant donc descendu, je verrai si leurs actions répondent à ce cri qui m'est parvenu; et si non, je le saurai...
22 And thei turneden han fro thennus, and yeden to Sodom. Abraham sotheli stood yit bifore the Lord,
S'étant alors éloignés, les hommes s'en allèrent à Sodome, et Abraham resta devant le Seigneur.
23 and neiyede, and seide, Whether thou schalt leese a iust man with the wickid man?
Abraham s'approcha et dit: Perdrez-vous le juste avec les impies, et le juste sera-t-il comme l'impie?
24 if fifti iust men ben in the citee, schulen thei perische togidere, and schalt thou not spare that place for fifti iust men, if thei ben ther ynne?
S'il y a cinquante justes dans la ville, les perdrez-vous? Ne ferez-vous point grâce à toute la contrée, à cause des cinquante justes, s'ils sont dans la ville?
25 Fer be it fro thee that thou do this thing, and sle a iust man with a wickid man, and that a iust man be maad as a wickid man; this is not thin that demest al erthe; thou schalt not make this doom.
Non, vous ne ferez point cette action de tuer le juste avec les impies, car le juste serait comme l'impie; il n'en sera point ainsi; vous qui jugez toute la terre, vous ne rendriez point justice!
26 And the Lord seide to him, If Y schal fynde in Sodom fifti iust men in the myddis of the citee, Y schal foryyue to al the place for hem.
Le Seigneur repartit: S'il y a cinquante justes en la ville de Sodome, j'épargnerai, à cause d'eux, toute la ville et la contrée entière.
27 Abraham answerde and seide, For Y bigan onys, Y schal speke to my Lord, sithen Y am dust and aische;
Et Abraham répondant: Maintenant, dit-il, j'ai commencé à parler à mon Seigneur, moi, terre et poussière!
28 what if lesse than fifti iust men bi fyue ben, schalt thou do a wey al the cite for fyue and fourti? And the Lord seide, Y schal not do a wei, if I schal fynde fyue and fourti there.
Si les cinquante justes se réduisent à quarante-cinq, détruirez-vous toute la ville à cause des cinq? Le Seigneur dit: S'il s'y trouve quarante- cinq justes, je ne la détruirai pas.
29 And eft Abraham seide to hym, But if fourti ben there, what schalt thou do? The Lord seide, Y schal not smyte for fourti.
Et Abraham, continuant de parler au Seigneur, dit: S'il s'en trouve quarante? Le Seigneur reprit: En faveur des quarante, je ne la détruirai pas.
30 Abraham seide, Lord, Y biseche, take thou not to indignacioun, if Y speke; what if thretti be foundun there? The Lord answerde, Y schal not do, if Y schal fynde thretti there.
Abraham dit ensuite: Qu'en sera-t-il, Seigneur, si je parle encore? S'il s'en trouve trente? Le Seigneur dit: En faveur des trente, je ne la détruirai pas.
31 Abraham seide, For Y bigan onys, Y schal speke to my Lord; what if twenti be foundun there? The Lord seide, Y schal not sle for twenti.
Abraham ajouta: Puisqu'il m'est donné de parler au Seigneur, s'il s'en trouve vingt? Et le Seigneur répondit: Si j'en trouve vingt, je ne la détruirai pas.
32 Abraham seide, Lord, Y biseche, be thou not wrooth, if Y speke yit onys; what if ten be founden there? The Lord seide, Y schal not do a wey for ten.
Et Abraham dit: Seigneur, parlerai-je encore une seule fois? S'il s'en trouve dix? Et le Seigneur dit: En faveur des dix, je ne la détruirai pas.
33 The Lord yede forth, after that he ceesside to speke to Abraham, and Abraham turnede ayen in to his place.
Lorsqu'il eut cessé de parler à Abraham, le Seigneur partit, et celui-ci retourna au lieu qu'il habitait.
