Matthew 14
1 At that time, Herod the tetrarch heard the report concerning Yeshua,
Ἐν ἐκείνῳ τῷ καιρῷ ἤκουσεν Ἡρῴδης ὁ τετραάρχης τὴν ἀκοὴν Ἰησοῦ
2 and said to his servants, “This is Yochanan the Immerser. He is risen from the dead. That is why these powers work in him.”
καὶ εἶπεν τοῖς παισὶν αὐτοῦ· οὗτός ἐστιν Ἰωάννης ὁ βαπτιστής· αὐτὸς ἠγέρθη ἀπὸ τῶν νεκρῶν, καὶ διὰ τοῦτο αἱ δυνάμεις ἐνεργοῦσιν ἐν αὐτῷ.
3 For Herod had arrested Yochanan, bound him, and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife.
ὁ γὰρ Ἡρῴδης κρατήσας τὸν Ἰωάννην ἔδησεν αὐτὸν καὶ ἐν (τῇ *o*) φυλακῇ (ἀπέθετο *N(k)O*) διὰ Ἡρῳδιάδα τὴν γυναῖκα Φιλίππου τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ αὐτοῦ.
4 For Yochanan said to him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.”
ἔλεγεν γὰρ ὁ Ἰωάννης αὐτῷ· οὐκ ἔξεστίν σοι ἔχειν αὐτήν.
5 When he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet.
καὶ θέλων αὐτὸν ἀποκτεῖναι ἐφοβήθη τὸν ὄχλον ὅτι ὡς προφήτην αὐτὸν εἶχον.
6 But when Herod’s birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced among them and pleased Herod.
(Γενεσίοις *N(k)O*) δὲ (γενομένοις *N(k)O*) τοῦ Ἡρῴδου ὠρχήσατο ἡ θυγάτηρ τῆς Ἡρῳδιάδος ἐν τῷ μέσῳ καὶ ἤρεσεν τῷ Ἡρῴδῃ·
7 Therefore he promised with an oath to give her whatever she should ask.
ὅθεν μεθ᾽ ὅρκου ὡμολόγησεν αὐτῇ δοῦναι ὃ (ἐὰν *NK(o)*) αἰτήσηται.
8 She, being prompted by her mother, said, “Give me here on a platter the head of Yochanan the Immerser.”
ἡ δὲ προβιβασθεῖσα ὑπὸ τῆς μητρὸς αὐτῆς· δός μοι φησὶν ὧδε ἐπὶ πίνακι τὴν κεφαλὴν Ἰωάννου τοῦ βαπτιστοῦ.
9 The king was grieved, but for the sake of his oaths and of those who sat at the table with him, he commanded it to be given,
καὶ (λυπηθεὶς *N(k)O*) ὁ βασιλεὺς διὰ (δὲ *k*) τοὺς ὅρκους καὶ τοὺς συνανακειμένους ἐκέλευσεν δοθῆναι.
10 and he sent and beheaded Yochanan in the prison.
καὶ πέμψας ἀπεκεφάλισεν τὸν Ἰωάννην ἐν τῇ φυλακῇ.
11 His head was brought on a platter and given to the young lady; and she brought it to her mother.
καὶ ἠνέχθη ἡ κεφαλὴ αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ πίνακι καὶ ἐδόθη τῷ κορασίῳ, καὶ ἤνεγκεν τῇ μητρὶ αὐτῆς.
12 His disciples came, took the body, and buried it. Then they went and told Yeshua.
Καὶ προσελθόντες οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ ἦραν τὸ (πτῶμα *N(k)O*) καὶ ἔθαψαν (αὐτόν, *N(k)O*) καὶ ἐλθόντες ἀπήγγειλαν τῷ Ἰησοῦ.
13 Now when Yeshua heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat to a deserted place apart. When the multitudes heard it, they followed him on foot from the cities.
(Καὶ *k*) Ἀκούσας (δὲ *no*) ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἀνεχώρησεν ἐκεῖθεν ἐν πλοίῳ εἰς ἔρημον τόπον κατ᾽ ἰδίαν. καὶ ἀκούσαντες οἱ ὄχλοι ἠκολούθησαν αὐτῷ πεζῇ ἀπὸ τῶν πόλεων.
14 Yeshua went out, and he saw a great multitude. He had compassion on them and healed their sick.
καὶ ἐξελθὼν (ὁ Ἰησοῦς *k*) εἶδεν πολὺν ὄχλον καὶ ἐσπλαγχνίσθη ἐπ᾽ (αὐτοῖς *N(k)O*) καὶ ἐθεράπευσεν τοὺς ἀρρώστους αὐτῶν.
15 When evening had come, his disciples came to him, saying, “This place is deserted, and the hour is already late. Send the multitudes away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves food.”
Ὀψίας δὲ γενομένης προσῆλθον αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταὶ (αὐτοῦ *k*) λέγοντες· ἔρημός ἐστιν ὁ τόπος, καὶ ἡ ὥρα ἤδη παρῆλθεν· ἀπόλυσον τοὺς ὄχλους ἵνα ἀπελθόντες εἰς τὰς κώμας ἀγοράσωσιν ἑαυτοῖς βρώματα.
16 But Yeshua said to them, “They don’t need to go away. You give them something to eat.”
Ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· οὐ χρείαν ἔχουσιν ἀπελθεῖν· δότε αὐτοῖς ὑμεῖς φαγεῖν.
17 They told him, “We only have here five loaves and two fish.”
οἱ δὲ λέγουσιν αὐτῷ· οὐκ ἔχομεν ὧδε εἰ μὴ πέντε ἄρτους καὶ δύο ἰχθύας.
18 He said, “Bring them here to me.”
ὁ δὲ εἶπεν· φέρετέ μοι ὧδε αὐτούς.
19 He commanded the multitudes to sit down on the grass; and he took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, broke and gave the loaves to the disciples; and the disciples gave to the multitudes.
καὶ κελεύσας τοὺς ὄχλους ἀνακλιθῆναι ἐπὶ (τοῦ χόρτου, *N(k)O*) (καὶ *k*) λαβὼν τοὺς πέντε ἄρτους καὶ τοὺς δύο ἰχθύας, ἀναβλέψας εἰς τὸν οὐρανὸν εὐλόγησεν, καὶ κλάσας ἔδωκεν τοῖς μαθηταῖς τοὺς ἄρτους, οἱ δὲ μαθηταὶ τοῖς ὄχλοις.
20 They all ate and were filled. They took up twelve baskets full of that which remained left over from the broken pieces.
καὶ ἔφαγον πάντες καὶ ἐχορτάσθησαν· καὶ ἦραν τὸ περισσεῦον τῶν κλασμάτων, δώδεκα κοφίνους πλήρεις.
21 Those who ate were about five thousand men, in addition to women and children.
οἱ δὲ ἐσθίοντες ἦσαν ἄνδρες ὡσεὶ πεντακισχίλιοι χωρὶς γυναικῶν καὶ παιδίων.
22 Immediately Yeshua made the disciples get into the boat and go ahead of him to the other side, while he sent the multitudes away.
Καὶ εὐθέως ἠνάγκασεν (ὁ Ἰησοῦς *k*) τοὺς μαθητὰς (αὐτοῦ *k*) ἐμβῆναι εἰς τὸ πλοῖον καὶ προάγειν αὐτὸν εἰς τὸ πέραν ἕως οὗ ἀπολύσῃ τοὺς ὄχλους.
23 After he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into the mountain by himself to pray. When evening had come, he was there alone.
Καὶ ἀπολύσας τοὺς ὄχλους ἀνέβη εἰς τὸ ὄρος κατ᾽ ἰδίαν προσεύξασθαι. Ὀψίας δὲ γενομένης μόνος ἦν ἐκεῖ.
24 But the boat was now in the middle of the sea, distressed by the waves, for the wind was contrary.
τὸ δὲ πλοῖον ἤδη (σταδίους πολλοὺς *NO*) (ἀπὸ *N(K)O*) τῆς (γῆς ἀπεῖχεν *N(K)O*) βασανιζόμενον ὑπὸ τῶν κυμάτων· ἦν γὰρ ἐναντίος ὁ ἄνεμος.
25 In the fourth watch of the night, Yeshua came to them, walking on the sea.
τετάρτῃ δὲ φυλακῇ τῆς νυκτὸς (ἦλθεν *N(K)O*) πρὸς αὐτοὺς (ὁ Ἰησοῦς *k*) περιπατῶν ἐπὶ (τὴν θάλασσαν. *N(k)O*)
26 When the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, “It’s a ghost!” and they cried out for fear.
Οἱ (δὲ *N(k)O*) μαθηταὶ ἰδόντες αὐτὸν ἐπὶ (τῆς θαλάσσης *N(k)O*) περιπατοῦντα ἐταράχθησαν λέγοντες ὅτι φάντασμά ἐστιν, καὶ ἀπὸ τοῦ φόβου ἔκραξαν.
27 But immediately Yeshua spoke to them, saying, “Cheer up! It is I! Don’t be afraid.”
εὐθὺς δὲ ἐλάλησεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς αὐτοῖς λέγων· θαρσεῖτε· ἐγώ εἰμι, μὴ φοβεῖσθε.
28 Peter answered him and said, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the waters.”
Ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ αὐτῷ ὁ Πέτρος εἶπεν· κύριε, εἰ σὺ εἶ, κέλευσόν με ἐλθεῖν πρός σε ἐπὶ τὰ ὕδατα.
29 He said, “Come!” Peter stepped down from the boat and walked on the waters to come to Yeshua.
ὁ δὲ εἶπεν· ἐλθέ. καὶ καταβὰς ἀπὸ τοῦ πλοίου ὁ Πέτρος περιεπάτησεν ἐπὶ τὰ ὕδατα (καὶ *no*) (ἦλθεν *N(k)O*) πρὸς τὸν Ἰησοῦν.
30 But when he saw that the wind was strong, he was afraid, and beginning to sink, he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!”
βλέπων δὲ τὸν ἄνεμον ἰσχυρὸν ἐφοβήθη, καὶ ἀρξάμενος καταποντίζεσθαι ἔκραξεν λέγων· κύριε, σῶσόν με.
31 Immediately Yeshua stretched out his hand, took hold of him, and said to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?”
Εὐθέως δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἐκτείνας τὴν χεῖρα ἐπελάβετο αὐτοῦ καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ· ὀλιγόπιστε, εἰς τί ἐδίστασας;
32 When they got up into the boat, the wind ceased.
καὶ (ἀναβάντων *N(k)O*) αὐτῶν εἰς τὸ πλοῖον ἐκόπασεν ὁ ἄνεμος.
33 Those who were in the boat came and worshiped him, saying, “You are truly the Son of God!”
οἱ δὲ ἐν τῷ πλοίῳ (ἐλθόντες *ko*) προσεκύνησαν αὐτῷ λέγοντες· ἀληθῶς θεοῦ υἱὸς εἶ.
34 When they had crossed over, they came to the land of Gennesaret.
καὶ διαπεράσαντες ἦλθον (εἰς *NK(o)*) τὴν γῆν (εἰς *no*) Γεννησαρέτ.
35 When the people of that place recognized him, they sent into all that surrounding region and brought to him all who were sick;
καὶ ἐπιγνόντες αὐτὸν οἱ ἄνδρες τοῦ τόπου ἐκείνου ἀπέστειλαν εἰς ὅλην τὴν περίχωρον ἐκείνην καὶ προσήνεγκαν αὐτῷ πάντας τοὺς κακῶς ἔχοντας
36 and they begged him that they might just touch the fringe of his garment. As many as touched it were made whole.
καὶ παρεκάλουν αὐτὸν ἵνα μόνον ἅψωνται τοῦ κρασπέδου τοῦ ἱματίου αὐτοῦ· καὶ ὅσοι ἥψαντο διεσώθησαν.
