Ecclesiastes 6
1 There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, and it [is] common among men:
Há um mal que vi abaixo do sol, e é muito frequente entre os homens:
2 A man to whom God hath given riches, wealth, and honor, so that he wanteth nothing for his soul of all that he desireth, yet God giveth him not power to eat of it, but a stranger eateth it: this [is] vanity, and it [is] an evil disease.
Um homem a quem Deus deu riquezas, bens, e honra; e nada lhe falta de tudo quanto a sua alma deseja; porém Deus não lhe dá poder para dessas coisas comer; em vez disso, um estranho as come; isso é futilidade e um mal causador de sofrimento.
3 If a man begetteth a hundred [children], and liveth many years, so that the days of his years are many, and his soul is not filled with good, and also [that] he hath no burial; I say, [that] an untimely birth [is] better than he.
Se o homem gerar cem [filhos], e viver muitos anos, e os dias de seus anos forem muitos, porém se sua alma não se saciar daquilo que é bom, nem tiver sepultamento, digo que ter sido abortado [teria sido] melhor para ele.
4 For he cometh with vanity, and departeth in darkness, and his name shall be covered with darkness.
Pois veio em futilidade, e se vai em trevas; e nas trevas seu nome é encoberto.
5 Moreover he hath not seen the sun, nor known [any thing]: this hath more rest than the other.
[Alguém] que nunca tivesse visto o sol, nem [o] conhecido, teria mais descanso do que ele.
6 Yes, though he liveth a thousand years twice [told], yet hath he seen no good: do not all go to one place?
E ainda que vivesse mil anos duas vezes, e não experimentasse o que é bom, por acaso não vão todos para o mesmo lugar?
7 All the labor of man [is] for his mouth, and yet the appetite is not filled.
Todo o trabalho do homem é para sua boca; porém sua alma nunca se satisfaz.
8 For what hath the wise more than the fool? what hath the poor, that knoweth to walk before the living?
Pois que vantagem tem o sábio sobre o tolo? E que [mais] tem o pobre que sabe como se comportar diante dos vivos?
9 Better [is] the sight of the eyes than the wandering of the desire: this [is] also vanity and vexation of spirit.
Melhor é a vista dos olhos do que o vaguear da cobiça; também isto é fútil [como] perseguir o vento.
10 That which hath been is named already, and it is known that it [is] man: neither may he contend with him that is mightier than he.
Seja o que for, seu nome já foi chamado; e [já] se sabe o que o homem é; e que não pode disputar contra aquele que é mais poderoso do que ele.
11 Seeing there are many things that increase vanity, what [is] man the better?
Pois quanto mais palavras há, maior é a futilidade; e que proveito há [nelas] para o homem?
12 For who knoweth what [is] good for man in [this] life, all the days of his vain life which he spendeth as a shadow? for who can tell a man what shall be after him under the sun?
Pois quem sabe o que é bom nesta vida para o homem, durante os dias de sua vida de futilidade, os quais ele gasta como sombra? Pois quem contará ao homem o que haverá depois dele abaixo do sol?
