< Genesis 2 >
1 Then the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the living things that filled them.
Thus were finished the heavens and the earth, and all their host.
2 On the seventh day God came to the end of his work which he had done, and so he rested on the seventh day from all his work.
And God had finished on the seventh day his work which he had made, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.
3 God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it he rested from all his work which he had done in his creation.
And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it; because thereon he had rested from all his work which God had created in making it.
4 These were the events concerning the heavens and the earth, when they were created, on the day that Yahweh God made the earth and the heavens.
These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, on the day that the Lord God made earth and heaven.
5 No bush of the field was yet in the earth, and no plant of the field had yet sprouted, for Yahweh God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was no man to cultivate the ground.
And every plant of the field was not yet on the earth, and every herb of the field had not yet grown; for the Lord God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and man was not yet there to till the ground.
6 But a mist went up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground.
But there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground.
7 Yahweh God formed man from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living being.
And the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and the man became a living being.
8 Yahweh God planted a garden eastward, in Eden, and there he put the man whom he had formed.
And the Lord God planted a garden in Eden to the eastward, and he put there the man whom he had formed.
9 Out of the ground Yahweh God made every tree to grow that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. This included the tree of life that was in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
And the Lord God caused to grow out of the ground every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food; and the tree of life in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
10 A river went out of Eden to water the garden. From there it divided and became four rivers.
And a river went out of Eden to water the garden, and from there it was parted, and became four principal streams.
11 The name of the first is Pishon. It is the one which flows throughout the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold.
The name of the first is Pishon, the same which compasseth the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold.
12 The gold of that land is good. There are also bdellium and the onyx stone.
And the gold of that land is good; there is the bdellium and the onyx stone.
13 The name of the second river is Gihon. This one flows throughout the whole land of Cush.
And the name of the second river is Gihon, the same which compasseth the whole land of Cush.
14 The name of the third river is Tigris, which flows east of Ashur. The fourth river is the Euphrates.
And the name of the third river is Hiddekel, the same which floweth towards the east of Assyria; and the fourth river is the Euphrates.
15 Yahweh God took the man and put him into the garden of Eden to work it and to maintain it.
And the Lord God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden, to till it, and to keep it.
16 Yahweh God commanded the man, saying, “From every tree in the garden you may freely eat.
And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat;
17 But from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you may not eat, for on the day that you eat from it, you will surely die.”
But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it; for on the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.
18 Then Yahweh God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone. I will make him a helper suitable for him.”
And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a help suitable for him.
19 Out of the ground Yahweh God formed every animal of the field and every bird of the sky. Then he brought them to the man to see what he would call them. Whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name.
And the Lord God had formed out of the ground every beast of the field, and every fowl of the heaven, and he brought them unto the man to see what he would call them; and whatsoever the man would call every living creature, that should be its name.
20 The man gave names to all the livestock, to all the birds of the sky, and to every beast of the field. But for the man himself there was found no helper suitable for him.
And the man gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the heaven, and to every beast of the field; but for man there was not found a help suitable for him.
21 Yahweh God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, so the man slept. Yahweh God took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh where he took the rib.
And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof.
22 With the rib that Yahweh God had taken from the man, he made a woman and brought her to the man.
And the Lord God formed the rib which he had taken from the man into a woman, and brought her unto the man.
23 The man said, “This time, this one is bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh. She will be called 'woman,' because she was taken out of man.”
And the man said, This time it is bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh; this shall be called Woman, [[Ishah, ]] because out of Man [[Ishi]] was this one taken.
24 Therefore a man will leave his father and his mother, he will be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.
Therefore doth a man leave his father and his mother, and cleave unto his wife, and they become one flesh.
25 They were both naked, the man and his wife, but were not ashamed.
And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.
