< Acts 20 >

1 After the people at Ephesus had stopped rioting, Paul summoned the believers. He encouraged them [to continue to trust in the Lord Jesus. Soon] after that, he told them goodbye and left to go to Macedonia [province].
MAHOPE iho o ka pau ana ae o keia haunaele, hoakoakoa iho la o Paulo i na hanmana, a honi ae la, a puka aku la iwaho, e hele i Makedonia.
2 [After he arrived] there, he visited [each town where there were believers], and encouraged them. Then he arrived in Greece [province], [which is also called Achaia].
Kaahele ae la ia ma ia mau aina, a hooikaika aku la ia lakou me ka olelo nui, hele aku la i Helene;
3 He stayed there for three months. Then he planned to return to Syria by ship, but [he heard that] some of the Jews [SYN] [in that area] were planning to kill him [as he traveled. So] he decided instead to go [by land, and he traveled] again through Macedonia.
Noho iho la malaila ekolu malama: a i kona kokoko ana o holo i Suria, hoohalua aku la na Iudaio ia ia, nolaila, manao iho la ia e hoi ma Makedonia aku.
4 The men who were going to travel with him [to Jerusalem were] Sopater, [who was] a son of Pyrrhus, who grew up in Berea [town]; Aristarchus and Secundus, who were from Thessalonica [city; ] Gaius, [who was] from Derbe [town; ] Timothy, [who was from Galatia province; ] and Tychicus and Trophimus who were from Asia [province].
Hele pu aku la me ia a hiki i Asia o Sopatero, no Beroia, a me Arisetareko laua o Sekunedo no Tesalonike, a me Gaio laua o Timoteo no Derebe, a me Tukiko laua o Teropima no Asia.
5 Those [seven] men went ahead of [Paul and me, Luke, by ship from Macedonia, so] they got to Troas [before we did and] waited for [the two of] us there.
Hele mua aku la lakou nei, a kakali iho la ma Teroa no makou.
6 [But we two(exc) traveled by land as far as] Philippi [city]. After the Jewish festival [when they eat] unleavened bread, we got on a ship [that was going from] the port near [Philippi to Troas city]. After five days we [(exc)] arrived at Troas and we met the other men who had traveled there [ahead of us]. Then we [all] stayed in Troas for seven days.
A mahope iho o na la o ka berena hu ole, holo aku la makou mai Pilipi aku, po alima hiki aku makou io lakou la ma Teroa; malaila makou i noho ai i na la ehiku.
7 (On Sunday evening/On the evening of the first day of the week), we [(exc) and the other believers there] gathered together to celebrate the Lord’s Supper [and to eat other food] [SYN]. Paul spoke to the believers. He continued teaching them until midnight, because he was planning to leave [Troas] the next day.
A i ka la mua o ka hebedoma, i ko na haumana akoakoa ana o wawahi i ka berena, kamailio mai la o Paulo ia lakou, ua makaukau hoi e holo ia kakahiaka ae. Hooloihi hoi i ka olelo ana a hiki i ke aumoe.
8 Many [oil] lamps were burning in the upstairs room in which we [(exc)] had gathered, [so the fumes caused some people to become sleepy].
Ua nui no hoi na kukui ma ke keena maluna, i kahi a makou i akoakoa ai.
9 A young man whose name was Eutychus was there. He was seated on [the sill of] an [open] window [on the third story of the house]. As Paul continued talking for a long time, Eutychus became sleepier and sleepier. Finally, he was sound/really asleep. He fell [out of the window] from the third story down [to the ground. Some of the believers went down] immediately and picked him up. [But he was] dead.
Noho iho la kekahi kanaka opiopio ma ka pukamakani, o Eutuko kona inoa, ua kaumaha i ka hiamoe nui; a i ka Paulo kamailio loihi ana, pauhia iho la ia i ka hiamoe, a haule iho la ia ilalo, mai ke kolu o ka papa mai, a hapaiia ae la ia, ua make.
10 Paul [also] went down. He lay down and stretched out on top of the young man and put his arms around him. Then he said [to the people who were standing around], “Do not worry, he is alive [again now]!”
Iho mai la o Paulo ilalo, moe iho la maluna ona, puliki aku la ia ia, i mai la, Mai makau oukou; no ka mea, eia no kona ola maloko ona.
11 Then Paul, [along with the others], went upstairs again and they ate the Lord’s Supper and other food [SYN]. Afterwards, Paul conversed with the believers until dawn. Then he left.
Pii hou aku la ia, wawahi ae la i ka berena, ai iho la, kamailio loihi mai la, a wanaao ae, alaila, hele aku la ia.
12 The [other] people took the young man [home], and were greatly encouraged because he was alive [again].
Lawe mai la lakou i ua kanaka opiopio la, ua ola, aole okana mai ko lakou olioli.
13 We then went to the ship. Paul did not get on the ship [with us in Troas], because he preferred to go [more quickly] overland to Assos [town]. The rest of us got on the ship and sailed for Assos.
Holo mua aku la makou ma ka moku, a holo aku la i Aso: manao iho la malaila e hoee ia Paulo maloko, no ka mea, pela ia i kauoha mai ai, no kona makemake a hele wawae ilaila.
14 We [(exc)] met Paul in Assos. He got on [the ship] with us, and we sailed to Mitylene [town].
A halawai mai la ia me makou ma Aso, hoee mai la makou ia ia, a holo ma Mitulene.
15 The day after [we reached Mitylene], we [sailed from there and] arrived [at a place] near Kios [Island]. The day after that, we sailed to Samos [Island]. The next day we [left Samos and] sailed to Miletus [town].
Holo aku la makou mailaila aku, a ao ae hiki ma Kio, a ia la ae, hiki makou i Samo, a noho ma Terogulio; a ia la ae, hele mai makou a Mileto.
16 [Miletus was just south of Ephesus city]. Paul had [earlier] decided that he would not get on a ship that would stop at Ephesus, because he did not want to spend [several] days in Asia [province]. If possible, he wanted to arrive in Jerusalem by the [time of the] Pentecost festival, [and the time of that festival was near].
Ua paa no ko Paulo manao, e holo ma Epeso ae, aole hoi e kali ma Asia; no ka mea, ua wikiwiki no ia, ina pono ia ia ke hiki i Ierusalema ma ka la Penetekota.
17 [When the ship arrived at] Miletus, Paul sent [a messenger] to Ephesus to ask the elders of the congregation to come to talk with him.
Hoouna ae la ia, mai Mileto aku a Epeso, e kii i na lunakahiko o ka ekalesia.
18 When the elders arrived, Paul said to them, “You personally know how I [conducted myself among you the entire time] that I was with you, from the first day when I arrived [here] in Asia [province until the day I left].
A hiki lakou io na la, i mai la oia ia lakou, Ua ike no oukou, mai ka la makamua a'u i hiki mai ai i Asia nei, i ke ano o ko'u noho ana me oukou i na manawa a pau,
19 [You know how] I was serving the Lord [Jesus] very humbly and how I sometimes wept [about people. You also know how] I suffered because the Jews [SYN] [who were not believers often] tried [to harm me].
E hookauwa ana'ku na ka Haku me ka manao hoohaahaa a pau, a me na waimaka, a me na pilikia i loaa ia'u, no ka hoohalua ana o na Iudaio;
20 You also know that, as I preached [God’s message] to you, I never left out anything that would help you. You know that I taught you [God’s message] when many people were present, and I [also went to your] homes and taught it there.
Aole hoi au i huna i kekahi mea pono, aka, ua hoike au ia oukou, ua ao aku hoi ia oukou ma ke akea, a ma kela hale a ia hale aku,
21 I preached both to Jews and to non-Jews, telling them [all] that they must turn away from their sinful behavior. [I also told them they should] believe in our Lord Jesus.”
E hoike ana'ku i na Iudaio, a i na Helene, i ka mihi aku i ke Akua, a me ka manaoio aku i ka Haku, ia Iesu Kristo.
22 “And now note this: I am going to Jerusalem, because [God’s] Spirit has clearly shown me that I must go there. I do not know what will happen to me [while I am there].
Eia hoi au, ke hele paa aku nei ma ka uhane i Ierusalema; aole nae au i ike i na mea e loohia ai ia'u ilaila:
23 But I do know that in each city [where I have stopped], the Holy Spirit has (told me/[caused the believers to] tell me) that [in Jerusalem] people will put me in prison [PRS] and will cause me to suffer [PRS].
Aka, ke hoike pono mai nei ka Uhane Hemolele ma na kulanakauhale a pau, i mai, Ua makaukau na kaula paa a me ka pilikia no'u.
24 But I do not care even if people kill me, if first I am able to finish the work [MET] that the Lord Jesus has told me [to do. He appointed me] to tell people the good message that God [saves us] by doing for us what we do not deserve.
Aole hoi au e manao i keia mau mea, aole no hoi e manao wau he mea makemake no'u kuu ola nei, i hoopau wau i ko'u hele ana me ka olioli, a me ka oihana i loaa mai ia'u na ka Haku mai, na Iesu; i hoike aku no hoi au i ka euanelio o ka lokomaikai o ke Akua.
25 I have preached to you the message about how God desires to rule [people’s lives]. But now I know that today is the last time that you fellow believers will see me [SYN].
Aia hoi, ano la, ua ike no wau, aole e ike hou ia ko'u maka e oukou a pau, ka poe au i hoike aku ai i ke aupuni o ke Akua, i ko'u hele ana mawaena o oukou.
26 So I want you all to understand that if anyone [who has heard me preach] dies [without trusting in Jesus], it is not my fault [MTY],
No ia mea, ke hoike aku nei au ia oukou i keia la, ua maemae au i ke koko o na mea a pau.
27 because I told you [LIT] everything [HYP] that God has planned for us [(inc)].
No ka mea, aole au i molowa i ko'u hai ana aku ia oukou i ka makemake a pau a ke Akua.
28 [You leaders] must continue to believe and obey [God’s message. You must also help] all the other believers [MET] for whom the Holy Spirit has caused you to be responsible [MTY]. Watch over [MET] yourselves and the other believers [as] a shepherd [watches over his sheep]. God bought them with the blood [that flowed from] his [Son’s body on the cross].
Nolaila e ao oukou ia oukou iho, a me ka ohana a pau, maluna ona i hooliloia'i oukou e ka Uhane Hemolele i poe kahu. E hanai i ka ekalesia o ke Akua, i ka mea ana i kuai ai i kona koko iho.
29 I know [very well] that after I leave, [people who teach] [MET] [false doctrines] will come among you and will do great harm to the believers. [They will be like] fierce wolves [that kill sheep].
No ka mea, ua ike no au i keia, a hala au, alaila e komo mai na iliohae ino loa iwaena o oukou, aole loa lakou e minamina i ka ohana.
30 Even in your own group of believers there will be some who will deceive [other] believers by teaching them messages that are false. They will teach those messages so that some people [will believe them and] will become their followers.
E ku mai no hoi kekahi poe kanaka no oukou iho, e olelo no i na mea hoopunipuni e hoohuli i haumana mamuli o lakou.
31 So watch out [that none of you stops believing the true message about our Lord Jesus]. Remember that day and night for [about] three years I repeatedly taught you that message, and warned you with tears [in my eyes not to believe any other message].”
No ia mea, e makaala oukou, e hoomanao hoi i na makahiki ekolu a'u i hoomaha ole ai ke ao aku ia oukou a pau i ka po, a me ke ao, me na waimaka.
32 “[Now as I leave you], I ask God to protect you and to keep you believing the message [that he saves us(inc)] by doing for us what we do not deserve. [If you continue believing] the message [that I told you], you will become [spiritually mature], and God will give you the blessings that he has promised to give to all of those who belong to him.
E na hoahanau, ano la, ke haawi aku nei au ia oukou i ke Akua, a i ka olelo o kona lokomaikai, i ka mea hiki ke hookupaa ia oukou, a me ka haawi ia oukou i hooilina mawaena o ka poe a pau i hoomaemaeia.
33 [As for myself], I have not desired anyone’s money [MTY] or [fine] clothing.
Aole loa au i kuko aku i ke kala, a me ke gula, a me ka aahu o kekahi.
34 You yourselves know that I have worked [with my hands] [MTY] to earn the money that my companions and I needed.
Oiaio, ua ike no oukou, ua hookauwa mai keia mau lima no ko'u hemahema, a no ka poe me a'u.
35 In everything that I did, I showed you that we [(inc)] should work hard in order [to have enough money] to give some to those who are needy. We [(inc)] should remember that our Lord Jesus himself said, ‘You are happy when people give you what you need, but God will be happy with you when you give other people what they need.’”
Ua hoike aku no au ia oukou, i na mea a pau, a pela hoi e pono ai ke hana oukou, a e kokua aku no hoi i ka poe palupalu; e manao no hoi i ka olelo a ka Haku, a Iesu, i kana i ana mai, Ua oi aku ka pomaikai o ka haawi ana aku mamua o ka loaa ana mai.
36 When Paul had finished speaking, he knelt down with all of the elders and prayed.
Olelo mai la ia i keia mau mea, kukuli iho la ia, a pule aku la me lakou a pau.
37 They all cried a lot, and they hugged Paul and kissed him.
Uwe nui iho la lakou a pau, a hina lakou ma ka ai o Paulo, honi mai la ia ia;
38 They were especially sad because he had said that they would never see him [SYN] again. Then they [all] went with him to the ship.
No kela olelo ana i i mai ai, aole lakou e ike hou i kona maka, nolaila ko lakou kaumaha nui. Ukali aku la lakou ia ia ma ka moku.
