Proverbs 29
1 He that being often reproved hardeneth his neck shall suddenly be broken, and that without remedy.
Celui qui est souvent réprimandé et qui raidit son cou sera détruit soudainement, sans aucun remède.
2 When the righteous are increased, the people rejoice: but when a wicked man beareth rule, the people sigh.
Quand les justes prospèrent, le peuple se réjouit; mais quand les méchants gouvernent, le peuple gémit.
3 Whoso loveth wisdom rejoiceth his father: but he that keepeth company with harlots wasteth [his] substance.
Celui qui aime la sagesse fait la joie de son père; mais un compagnon de prostituées dilapide sa richesse.
4 The king by judgment establisheth the land: but he that exacteth gifts overthroweth it.
Le roi, par la justice, rend le pays stable, mais celui qui prend des pots-de-vin le démolit.
5 A man that flattereth his neighbour spreadeth a net for his steps.
Un homme qui flatte son prochain déploie un filet pour ses pieds.
6 In the transgression of an evil man there is a snare: but the righteous doth sing and rejoice.
L'homme mauvais est pris au piège par son péché, mais les justes peuvent chanter et se réjouir.
7 The righteous taketh knowledge of the cause of the poor: the wicked hath not understanding to know [it].
Les justes se soucient de la justice pour les pauvres. Les méchants ne se soucient pas de la connaissance.
8 Scornful men set a city in a flame: but wise men turn away wrath.
Les moqueurs agitent une ville, mais les hommes sages détournent la colère.
9 If a wise man hath a controversy with a foolish man, whether he be angry or laugh, there will be no rest.
Si un homme sage va au tribunal avec un homme insensé, le fou se met en colère ou se moque, et il n'y a pas de paix.
10 The bloodthirsty hate him that is perfect: and as for the upright, they seek his life.
Les sanguinaires détestent les hommes intègres; et ils recherchent la vie des honnêtes gens.
11 A fool uttereth all his anger: but a wise man keepeth it back and stilleth it.
L'imbécile évacue toute sa colère, mais un homme sage se maîtrise.
12 If a ruler hearkeneth to falsehood, all his servants are wicked.
Si un dirigeant écoute les mensonges, tous ses fonctionnaires sont méchants.
13 The poor man and the oppressor meet together: the LORD lighteneth the eyes of them both.
Le pauvre et l'oppresseur ont ceci en commun: Yahvé donne la vue aux yeux des deux.
14 The king that faithfully judgeth the poor, his throne shall be established for ever.
Le roi qui juge équitablement les pauvres, son trône sera établi pour toujours.
15 The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself causeth shame to his mother.
La verge de la correction donne la sagesse, mais un enfant laissé à lui-même fait honte à sa mère.
16 When the wicked are increased, transgression increaseth: but the righteous shall look upon their fall.
Quand les méchants augmentent, le péché augmente; mais les justes verront leur chute.
17 Correct thy son, and he shall give thee rest; yea, he shall give delight unto thy soul.
Corrige ton fils, et il te donnera la paix; oui, il apportera du plaisir à votre âme.
18 Where there is no vision, the people cast off restraint: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.
Là où il n'y a pas de révélation, le peuple se défait de toute contrainte; mais celui qui garde la loi est béni.
19 A servant will not be corrected by words: for though he understand he will not give heed.
Un serviteur ne peut pas être corrigé par des mots. Bien qu'il comprenne, il ne répond pas.
20 Seest thou a man that is hasty in his words? there is more hope of a fool than of him.
Vois-tu un homme qui se hâte dans ses paroles? Il y a plus d'espoir pour un fou que pour lui.
21 He that delicately bringeth up his servant from a child shall have him become a son at the last.
Celui qui dorlote son serviteur dès sa jeunesse le fera devenir un fils à la fin.
22 An angry man stirreth up strife, and a wrathful man aboundeth in transgression.
Un homme en colère suscite des querelles, et un homme courroucé abonde en péchés.
23 A man’s pride shall bring him low: but he that is of a lowly spirit shall obtain honour.
L'orgueil d'un homme l'abaisse, mais celui qui a l'esprit humble gagne l'honneur.
24 Whoso is partner with a thief hateth his own soul: he heareth the adjuration and uttereth nothing.
Celui qui est complice d'un voleur est l'ennemi de sa propre âme. Il prête serment, mais n'ose pas témoigner.
25 The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the LORD shall be safe.
La crainte de l'homme s'avère être un piège, mais celui qui met sa confiance en Yahvé est en sécurité.
26 Many seek the ruler’s favour: but a man’s judgment [cometh] from the LORD.
Beaucoup cherchent la faveur du chef, mais la justice d'un homme vient de Yahvé.
27 An unjust man is an abomination to the righteous: and he that is upright in the way is an abomination to the wicked.
L'homme malhonnête déteste les justes, et ceux qui sont droits dans leurs voies détestent les méchants.
