2 Samuel 11
1 And it came to pass, at the return of the year, at the time when kings go out [to battle], that David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the children of Ammon, and besieged Rabbah. But David tarried at Jerusalem.
Au retour de l'année, au moment où les rois sortent, David envoya avec lui Joab et ses serviteurs, et tout Israël; ils détruisirent les fils d'Ammon et assiégèrent Rabba. Mais David resta à Jérusalem.
2 And it came to pass at eventide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king’s house: and from the roof he saw a woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon.
Le soir, David se leva de son lit et se promena sur le toit de la maison du roi. Du toit, il vit une femme qui se baignait, et cette femme était très belle à voir.
3 And David sent and inquired after the woman. And one said, Is not this Bath-sheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?
David envoya demander des nouvelles de cette femme. On lui dit: « N'est-ce pas Bethsabée, fille d'Eliam, la femme d'Urie le Héthien? »
4 And David sent messengers, and took her; and she came in unto him, and he lay with her; (for she was purified from her uncleanness; ) and she returned unto her house.
David envoya des messagers, qui la prirent; elle entra chez lui, et il coucha avec elle (car elle était purifiée de son impureté); puis elle retourna dans sa maison.
5 And the woman conceived; and she sent and told David, and said, I am with child.
La femme devint enceinte; elle envoya avertir David, et dit: « Je suis enceinte. »
6 And David sent to Joab, [saying], Send me Uriah the Hittite. And Joab sent Uriah to David.
David envoya dire à Joab: « Envoie-moi Urie, le Hittite. » Joab envoya Urie à David.
7 And when Uriah was come unto him, David asked of him how Joab did, and how the people fared, and how the war prospered.
Lorsque Urie fut arrivé auprès de lui, David lui demanda comment allait Joab, comment se portait le peuple et comment la guerre avait prospéré.
8 And David said to Uriah, Go down thy house, and wash thy feet. And Uriah departed out of the king’s house, and there followed him a mess [of meat] from the king.
David dit à Urie: « Descends dans ta maison et lave-toi les pieds. » Urie sortit de la maison du roi, et un présent du roi fut envoyé après lui.
9 But Uriah slept at the door of the king’s house with all the servants of his lord, and went not down to his house.
Mais Urie se coucha à l'entrée de la maison du roi avec tous les serviteurs de son maître, et il ne descendit pas dans sa maison.
10 And when they had told David, saying, Uriah went not down unto his house, David said unto Uriah, Art thou not come from a journey? wherefore didst thou not go down unto thine house?
Lorsqu'on eut dit à David: « Urie n'est pas descendu dans sa maison », David dit à Urie: « Ne reviens-tu pas d'un voyage? Pourquoi n'es-tu pas descendu dans ta maison? »
11 And Uriah said unto David, The ark, and Israel, and Judah, abide in booths; and my lord Joab, and the servants of my lord, are encamped in the open field; shall I then go into mine house, to eat and to drink and to lie with my wife? as thou livest, and as thy soul liveth, I will not do this thing.
Urie dit à David: « L'arche, Israël et Juda sont sous des tentes, et mon seigneur Joab et les serviteurs de mon seigneur campent en plein champ. Irai-je donc dans ma maison pour manger et boire, et pour coucher avec ma femme? Aussi longtemps que tu vivras et que ton âme vivra, je ne ferai pas cela! ».
12 And David said to Uriah, Tarry here today also, and tomorrow I will let thee depart. So Uriah abode in Jerusalem that day, and the morrow.
David dit à Urie: « Reste ici aujourd'hui encore, et demain je te laisserai partir. » Urie resta donc à Jérusalem ce jour-là et le lendemain.
13 And when David had called him, he did eat and drink before him; and he made him drunk: and at even he went out to lie on his bed with the servants of his lord, but went not down to his house.
Lorsque David l'eut appelé, il mangea et but en sa présence, et il le fit boire. Le soir, il sortit pour se coucher sur son lit avec les serviteurs de son seigneur, mais il ne descendit pas dans sa maison.
14 And it came to pass in the morning, that David wrote a letter to Joab, and sent it by the hand of Uriah.
Le matin, David écrivit une lettre à Joab et l'envoya par la main d'Urie.
15 And he wrote in the letter, saying, Set ye Uriah in the forefront of the hottest battle, and retire ye from him, that he may be smitten, and die.
Il écrivit dans la lettre: « Envoie Urie au premier rang du combat le plus acharné, et retire-toi de lui, afin qu'il soit frappé et qu'il meure. »
16 And it came to pass, when Joab kept watch upon the city, that he assigned Uriah unto the place where he knew that valiant men were.
Joab, qui surveillait la ville, plaça Urie à l'endroit où il savait qu'il y avait des hommes vaillants.
17 And the men of the city went out, and fought with Joab: and there fell some of the people, even of the servants of David; and Uriah the Hittite died also.
Les hommes de la ville sortirent et se battirent avec Joab. Une partie du peuple tomba, même des serviteurs de David, et Urie, le Hittite, mourut aussi.
18 Then Joab sent and told David all the things concerning the war;
Joab envoya raconter à David tout ce qui s'était passé pendant la guerre.
19 and he charged the messenger, saying, When thou hast made an end of telling all the things concerning the war unto the king,
Il donna cet ordre au messager: « Quand tu auras fini de raconter au roi tout ce qui s'est passé pendant la guerre,
20 it shall be that, if the king’s wrath arise, and he say unto thee, Wherefore went ye so nigh unto the city to fight? knew ye not that they would shoot from the wall?
si la colère du roi se manifeste et qu'il te demande: « Pourquoi t'es-tu approché de la ville pour combattre? Ne savais-tu pas qu'on tirerait du haut de la muraille?
21 who smote Abimelech the son of Jerubbesheth? did not a woman cast an upper millstone upon him from the wall, that he died at Thebez? why went ye so nigh the wall? then shalt thou say, Thy servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.
Qui a frappé Abimélec, fils de Jerubbesheth? Une femme n'a-t-elle pas jeté sur lui, du haut de la muraille, une meule de moulin, de sorte qu'il est mort à Thèbes? Pourquoi t'es-tu approché de la muraille? Tu diras alors: « Ton serviteur Urie, le Héthien, est mort lui aussi ».
22 So the messenger went, and came and shewed David all that Joab had sent him for.
Le messager partit, et vint montrer à David tout ce que Joab lui avait envoyé chercher.
23 And the messenger said unto David, The men prevailed against us and came out unto us into the field, and we were upon them even unto the entering of the gate.
Le messager dit à David: « Les hommes ont eu raison de nous, ils sont sortis dans les champs, et nous les avons poursuivis jusqu'à l'entrée de la porte.
24 And the shooters shot at thy servants from off the wall; and some of the king’s servants be dead, and thy servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.
Les tireurs ont tiré sur tes serviteurs du côté de la muraille; certains des serviteurs du roi sont morts, et ton serviteur Urie le Hittite est également mort. »
25 Then David said unto the messenger, Thus shalt thou say unto Joab, Let not this thing displease thee, for the sword devoureth one as well as another: make thy battle more strong against the city, and overthrow it: and encourage thou him.
David dit au messager: « Dis à Joab: « Que cela ne te déplaise, car l'épée dévore aussi bien les uns que les autres. Fortifie ton combat contre la ville, et renverse-la ». Encourage-le. »
26 And when the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah her husband was dead, she made lamentation for her husband.
Lorsque la femme d'Urie apprit qu'Urie, son mari, était mort, elle porta le deuil de son mari.
27 And when the mourning was past, David sent and took her home to his house, and she became his wife, and bare him a son. But the thing that David had done displeased the LORD.
Lorsque le deuil fut terminé, David l'envoya chercher et la prit dans sa maison; elle devint sa femme et lui donna un fils. Mais ce que David avait fait déplut à Yahvé.
