John 4
1 When therefore Jesus knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John,
Ut ergo cognovit Iesus quia audierunt Pharisaei quod Iesus plures discipulos facit, et baptizat, quam Ioannes,
2 (though Jesus himself did not baptize, but his disciples, )
(quamquam Iesus non baptizaret, sed discipuli eius)
3 he left Judaea, and went again to Galilee.
reliquit Iudaeam, et abiit iterum in Galilaeam.
4 And he must necessarily pass through Samaria.
oportebat autem eum transire per mediam Samariam.
5 He cometh therefore to a city of Samaria, called Sychar, near the piece of land which Jacob gave to his son Joseph.
Venit ergo in civitatem Samariae, quae dicitur Sichar: iuxta praedium, quod dedit Iacob Ioseph filio suo.
6 And Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with the journey, was sitting thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour.
Erat autem ibi fons Iacob. Iesus ergo fatigatus ex itinere, sedebat sic supra fontem. Hora autem erat quasi sexta.
7 There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water. Jesus saith to her, Give me to drink.
Venit mulier de Samaria haurire aquam. Dicit ei Iesus: Da mihi bibere.
8 For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.
(Discipuli enim eius abierant in civitatem ut cibos emerent.)
9 The Samaritan woman saith to him, How is it that thou, who art a Jew, askest drink of me, who am a Samaritan woman? For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.
Dicit ergo ei mulier illa Samaritana: Quomodo tu Iudaeus cum sis, bibere a me poscis, quae sum mulier Samaritana? non enim coutuntur Iudaei Samaritanis.
10 Jesus answered and said to her, If thou hadst known the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink, thou wouldst have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.
Respondit Iesus, et dixit ei: Si scires donum Dei, et quis est, qui dicit tibi: Da mihi bibere: tu forsitan petisses ab eo, et dedisset tibi aquam vivam.
11 The woman saith to him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. Whence hast thou the living water?
Dicit ei mulier: Domine, neque in quo haurias habes, et puteus altus est: unde ergo habes aquam vivam?
12 Art thou greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his sons, and his cattle?
Numquid tu maior es patre nostro Iacob, qui dedit nobis puteum, et ipse ex eo bibit, et filii eius, et pecora eius?
13 Jesus answered and said to her, Every one that drinketh of this water, will thirst again;
Respondit Iesus, et dixit ei: Omnis, qui bibit ex aqua hac, sitiet iterum:
15 The woman saith to him, Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come hither to draw.
Dicit ad eum mulier: Domine, da mihi hanc aquam, ut non sitiam: neque veniam huc haurire.
16 He saith to her, Go, call thy husband, and come hither.
Dicit ei Iesus: Vade, voca virum tuum, et veni huc.
17 The woman answered, I have no husband. Jesus saith to her, Thou saidst well, that thou hast no husband.
Respondit mulier, et dixit: Non habeo virum. Dicit ei Iesus: Bene dixisti, quia non habeo virum:
18 For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband; in this thou hast spoken truly.
quinque enim viros habuisti, et hunc, quem habes, non est tuus vir: hoc vere dixisti.
19 The woman saith to him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.
Dicit ei mulier: Domine, video quia Propheta es tu.
20 Our fathers worshipped on this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.
Patres nostri in monte hoc adoraverunt, et vos dicitis, quia Ierosolymis est locus, ubi adorare oportet.
21 Jesus saith to her, Believe me, woman, the hour is coming, when ye shall neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father.
Dicit ei Iesus: Mulier crede mihi, quia venit hora, quando neque in monte hoc, neque in Ierosolymis adorabitis Patrem.
22 Ye worship that which ye know not; we worship that which we know; for salvation is from the Jews.
Vos adoratis quod nescitis: nos adoramus quod scimus, quia salus ex Iudaeis est.
23 But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth; for such worshippers the Father seeketh.
Sed venit hora, et nunc est, quando veri adoratores adorabunt Patrem in spiritu et veritate. Nam et Pater tales quaerit, qui adorent eum.
24 God is a spirit; and they who worship must worship in spirit and in truth.
Spiritus est Deus: et eos qui adorant eum, in spiritu et veritate oportet adorare.
25 The woman saith to him, I know that Messiah cometh (who is called Christ); when he hath come, he will tell us all things.
Dicit ei mulier: Scio quia Messias venit, (qui dicitur Christus.) cum ergo venerit ille, nobis annunciabit omnia.
26 Jesus saith to her, I who speak to thee am he.
Dicit ei Iesus: Ego sum, qui loquor tecum.
27 And upon this his disciples came, and marveled that he was talking with a woman. Yet no one said, What dost thou seek? or, Why dost thou talk with her?
Et continuo venerunt discipuli eius: et mirabantur quia cum muliere loquebatur. Nemo tamen dixit: Quid quaeris, aut quid loqueris cum ea?
28 The woman then left her water-pot, and went away into the city, and saith to the men,
Reliquit ergo hydriam suam mulier, et abiit in civitatem, et dicit illis hominibus:
29 Come, see a man who told me all things which I have done. Is this the Christ?
Venite, et videte hominem, qui dixit mihi omnia quaecumque feci: numquid ipse est Christus?
30 They went out of the city, and came to him.
Exierunt ergo de civitate, et veniebant ad eum.
31 In the mean while the disciples asked him, saying, Rabbi, eat.
Interea rogabant eum discipuli, dicentes: Rabbi, manduca.
32 But he said to them, I have food to eat that ye know not of.
Ille autem dicit eis: Ego cibum habeo manducare, quem vos nescitis.
33 The disciples therefore said to one another, Hath any one brought him anything to eat?
Dicebant ergo discipuli ad invicem: Numquid aliquis attulit ei manducare?
34 Jesus saith to them, My food is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.
Dicit eis Iesus: Meus cibus est ut faciam voluntatem eius, qui misit me, ut perficiam opus eius.
35 Do ye not say, There are yet four months, and the harvest cometh? Lo! I say to you, lift up your eyes, and look on the fields, that they are white for harvest.
Nonne vos dicitis, quod adhuc quattuor menses sunt, et messis venit? Ecce dico vobis: Levate oculos vestros, et videte regiones, quia albae sunt iam ad messem.
36 Already is the reaper receiving wages, and gathering fruit unto everlasting life; that both the sower and the reaper may rejoice together. (aiōnios g166)
Et qui metit, mercedem accipit, et congregat fructum in vitam aeternam: ut, et qui seminat, simul gaudeat, et qui metit. (aiōnios g166)
37 And herein is fulfilled the true saying, One soweth, and another reapeth.
In hoc enim est verbum verum: quia alius est qui seminat, et alius est qui metit.
38 I have sent you to reap that whereon ye have not labored. Others have labored, and ye have entered into their labor.
Ego misi vos metere quod vos non laborastis: alii laboraverunt, et vos in labores eorum introistis.
39 And many of the Samaritans of that city believed in him because of the words of the woman, who testified, He told me all things which I have done.
Ex civitate autem illa multi crediderunt in eum Samaritanorum, propter verbum mulieris testimonium perhibentis: Quia dixit mihi omnia quaecumque feci.
40 When therefore the Samaritans came to him, they besought him to remain with them; and he remained there two days.
Cum venissent ergo ad illum Samaritani, rogaverunt eum ut ibi maneret. Et mansit ibi duos dies.
41 And many more believed on account of his word;
Et multo plures crediderunt in eum propter sermonem eius.
42 and said to the woman, No longer do we believe on account of what thou hast told us; for we have ourselves heard him, and know that this is in truth the Saviour of the world.
Et mulieri dicebant: Quia iam non propter tuam loquelam credimus: ipsi enim audivimus, et scimus quia hic est vere Salvator mundi.
43 And after the two days he went from that place into Galilee.
Post duos autem dies exiit inde: et abiit in Galilaeam.
44 For Jesus himself testified, that a prophet hath no honor in his own country.
Ipse enim Iesus testimonium perhibuit quia Propheta in sua patria honorem non habet.
45 When therefore he came into Galilee, the Galilaeans received him, having seen all that he did in Jerusalem at the feast; for they also went to the feast.
Cum ergo venisset in Galilaeam, exceperunt eum Galilaei, cum omnia vidissent quae fecerat Ierosolymis in die festo: et ipsi enim venerant ad diem festum.
46 So he came again into Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman, whose son was sick, at Capernaum.
Venit ergo iterum in Cana Galilaeae, ubi fecit aquam vinum. Et erat quidam regulus, cuius filius infirmabatur Capharnaum.
47 He, having heard that Jesus had come out of Judaea into Galilee, went to him, and asked him to go down and heal his son; for he was at the point of death.
Hic cum audisset quia Iesus adveniret a Iudaea in Galilaeam, abiit ad eum, et rogabat eum ut descenderet, et sanaret filium eius: incipiebat enim mori.
48 Then Jesus said to him, Unless ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe.
Dixit ergo Iesus ad eum: Nisi signa, et prodigia videritis, non creditis.
49 The nobleman saith to him, Sir, come down before my child die.
Dicit ad eum regulus: Domine, descende prius quam moriatur filius meus.
50 Jesus saith to him, Go; thy son liveth. The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him, and went away.
Dicit ei Iesus: Vade, filius tuus vivit. Credidit homo sermoni, quem dixit ei Iesus, et ibat.
51 And as he was now going down, the servants met him, and brought word that his child was living.
Iam autem eo descendente, servi occurrerunt ei, et nunciaverunt dicentes, quia filius eius viveret.
52 Then he inquired of them the hour when he began to mend. And they said to him, Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.
Interrogabat ergo horam ab eis, in qua melius habuerit. Et dixerunt ei: Quia heri hora septima reliquit eum febris.
53 So the father knew that it was in the same hour in which Jesus said to him, Thy son is living. And he himself believed, and his whole house.
Cognovit ergo pater, quia illa hora erat, in qua dixit ei Iesus: Filius tuus vivit: et credidit ipse, et domus eius tota.
54 This again, a second sign, Jesus wrought, when he had come out of Judaea into Galilee.
Hoc iterum secundum signum fecit Iesus, cum venisset a Iudaea in Galilaeam.
