< Genesis 4 >

1 Now Adam had marital relations with his wife Eve, and she conceived, and gave birth to Cain, and said, "I have gotten a man from God."
And the man knew Eve his wife; and she conceived and bore Cain, and said: 'I have gotten a man with the help of the LORD.'
2 Again she gave birth, to Cain's brother Abel. Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.
And again she bore his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.
3 As time passed, it happened that Cain brought an offering to God from the fruit of the ground.
And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD.
4 And Abel also brought some of the firstborn of his flock and of its fat. And God looked favorably on Abel and his offering,
And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering;
5 but he did not look favorably on Cain and his offering. Cain was very angry, and the expression on his face fell.
but unto Cain and to his offering He had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.
6 God said to Cain, "Why are you angry? Why has the expression of your face fallen?
And the LORD said unto Cain: 'Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen?
7 If you do well, will it not be lifted up? If you do not do well, sin lies in wait at the door. It desires to control you, but you must rule over it."
If thou doest well, shall it not be lifted up? and if thou doest not well, sin coucheth at the door; and unto thee is its desire, but thou mayest rule over it.'
8 Cain said to Abel, his brother, "Let's go into the field." It happened when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel, his brother, and killed him.
And Cain spoke unto Abel his brother. And it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.
9 Then God said to Cain, "Where is Abel, your brother?" He said, "I do not know. Am I my brother's keeper?"
And the LORD said unto Cain: 'Where is Abel thy brother?' And he said: 'I know not; am I my brother's keeper?'
10 And God said, "What have you done? The voice of your brother's blood cries out to me from the ground.
And He said: 'What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto Me from the ground.
11 Now you are cursed because of the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand.
And now cursed art thou from the ground, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand.
12 From now on, when you till the ground, it won't yield its strength to you. You shall be a fugitive and a wanderer in the earth."
When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a wanderer shalt thou be in the earth.'
13 Cain said to God, "My punishment is greater than I can bear.
And Cain said unto the LORD: 'My punishment is greater than I can bear.
14 Look, you have driven me out this day from the surface of the ground. I will be hidden from your face, and I will be a fugitive and a wanderer in the earth. It will happen that whoever finds me will kill me."
Behold, Thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the land; and from Thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a wanderer in the earth; and it will come to pass, that whosoever findeth me will slay me.'
15 And God said to him, "Not so. Whoever kills Cain vengeance will be taken on him sevenfold." And God appointed a sign for Cain, lest any finding him should strike him.
And the LORD said unto him: 'Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold.' And the LORD set a sign for Cain, lest any finding him should smite him.
16 So Cain went out from the presence of God and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden.
And Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.
17 Cain had marital relations with his wife, and she conceived and gave birth to Enoch. He built a city and called the name of the city after the name of his son, Enoch.
And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bore Enoch; and he builded a city, and called the name of the city after the name of his son Enoch.
18 To Enoch was born Irad, and Irad became the father of Mehaiel, and Mehaiel became the father of Methushael, and Methushael became the father of Lamech.
And unto Enoch was born Irad; and Irad begot Mehujael; and Mehujael begot Methushael; and Methushael begot Lamech.
19 Lamech took two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah.
And Lamech took unto him two wives; the name of one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah.
20 Adah gave birth to Jabal, who was the father of those who dwell in tents and have livestock.
And Adah bore Jabal; he was the father of such as dwell in tents and have cattle.
21 His brother's name was Jubal, who was the father of all who play the harp and flute.
And his brother's name was Jubal; he was the father of all such as handle the harp and pipe.
22 Zillah also gave birth to Tubal Cain, who heated metal and shaped instruments of bronze and iron. Tubal Cain's sister was Naamah.
And Zillah, she also bore Tubal-cain, the forger of every cutting instrument of brass and iron; and the sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah.
23 Lamech said to his wives, "Adah and Zillah, hear my voice. You wives of Lamech, listen to my speech, for I have slain a man for wounding me, a young man for bruising me.
And Lamech said unto his wives: Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; ye wives of Lamech, hearken unto my speech; for I have slain a man for wounding me, and a young man for bruising me;
24 If Cain will be avenged seven times, truly Lamech seventy-seven times."
If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold.
25 Adam had marital relations with his wife again, and she gave birth to a son, and named him Seth, saying, "For God has appointed me another child instead of Abel, for Cain killed him."
And Adam knew his wife again; and she bore a son, and called his name Seth: 'for God hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel; for Cain slew him.'
26 And a son was also born to Seth, and he named him Enosh. This one began to call on the name of God.
And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enosh; then began men to call upon the name of the LORD.
