1 Where do conflicts and quarrels among you come from? Do they not come from your passions that war in your members?
yu. smaaka. m madhye samaraa ra. na"sca kuta utpadyante? yu. smada"nga"sibiraa"sritaabhya. h sukhecchaabhya. h ki. m notpadyante?
2 You lust, and do not have. You kill, covet, and cannot obtain. You fight and make war. You do not have, because you do not ask.
yuuya. m vaa nchatha kintu naapnutha, yuuya. m narahatyaam iir. syaa nca kurutha kintu k. rtaarthaa bhavitu. m na "saknutha, yuuya. m yudhyatha ra. na. m kurutha ca kintvapraaptaasti. s.thatha, yato heto. h praarthanaa. m na kurutha|
3 You ask, and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it for your pleasures.
yuuya. m praarthayadhve kintu na labhadhve yato heto. h svasukhabhoge. su vyayaartha. m ku praarthayadhve|
4 You adulterers and adulteresses, do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Therefore whoever wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.
he vyabhicaari. no vyabhicaari. nya"sca, sa. msaarasya yat maitrya. m tad ii"svarasya "saatravamiti yuuya. m ki. m na jaaniitha? ata eva ya. h ka"scit sa. msaarasya mitra. m bhavitum abhila. sati sa eve"svarasya "satru rbhavati|
5 Or do you think that the Scripture says in vain, "The Ruach which he made to dwell in us yearns jealously"?
yuuya. m ki. m manyadhve? "saastrasya vaakya. m ki. m phalahiina. m bhavet? asmadantarvaasii ya aatmaa sa vaa kim iir. syaartha. m prema karoti?
6 But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.
tannahi kintu sa pratula. m vara. m vitarati tasmaad uktamaaste yathaa, aatmaabhimaanalokaanaa. m vipak. so bhavatii"svara. h| kintu tenaiva namrebhya. h prasaadaad diiyate vara. h||
7 Be subject therefore to God. But resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
ataeva yuuyam ii"svarasya va"syaa bhavata "sayataana. m sa. mrundha tena sa yu. smatta. h palaayi. syate|
8 Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
ii"svarasya samiipavarttino bhavata tena sa yu. smaaka. m samiipavarttii bhavi. syati| he paapina. h, yuuya. m svakaraan pari. skurudhva. m| he dvimanolokaa. h, yuuya. m svaanta. hkara. naani "suciini kurudhva. m|
9 Lament, mourn, and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to gloom.
yuuyam udvijadhva. m "socata vilapata ca, yu. smaaka. m haasa. h "sokaaya, aananda"sca kaatarataayai parivarttetaa. m|
10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he will exalt you.
prabho. h samak. sa. m namraa bhavata tasmaat sa yu. smaan ucciikari. syati|
11 Do not speak against one another, brothers. He who speaks against a brother or judges his brother, speaks against the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law, but a judge.
he bhraatara. h, yuuya. m paraspara. m maa duu. sayata| ya. h ka"scid bhraatara. m duu. sayati bhraatu rvicaara nca karoti sa vyavasthaa. m duu. sayati vyavasthaayaa"sca vicaara. m karoti| tva. m yadi vyavasthaayaa vicaara. m karo. si tarhi vyavasthaapaalayitaa na bhavasi kintu vicaarayitaa bhavasi|
12 Only one is the lawgiver and judge, who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you to judge your neighbor?
advitiiyo vyavasthaapako vicaarayitaa ca sa evaaste yo rak. situ. m naa"sayitu nca paarayati| kintu kastva. m yat parasya vicaara. m karo. si?
13 Come now, you who say, "Today or tomorrow let us go into this city, and spend a year there, trade, and make a profit."
adya "svo vaa vayam amukanagara. m gatvaa tatra var. sameka. m yaapayanto vaa. nijya. m kari. syaama. h laabha. m praapsyaama"sceti kathaa. m bhaa. samaa. naa yuuyam idaanii. m "s. r.nuta|
14 Whereas you do not know what tomorrow will be like. What is your life? For you are a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.
"sva. h ki. m gha. ti. syate tad yuuya. m na jaaniitha yato jiivana. m vo bhavet kiid. rk tattu baa. spasvaruupaka. m, k. sa. namaatra. m bhaved d. r"sya. m lupyate ca tata. h para. m|
15 For you ought to say, "If the Lord wills, we will both live, and do this or that."
tadanuktvaa yu. smaakam ida. m kathaniiya. m prabhoricchaato vaya. m yadi jiivaamastarhyetat karmma tat karmma vaa kari. syaama iti|
16 But now you glory in your boasting. All such boasting is evil.
kintvidaanii. m yuuya. m garvvavaakyai. h "slaaghana. m kurudhve taad. r"sa. m sarvva. m "slaaghana. m kutsitameva|
17 To him therefore who knows to do good, and does not do it, to him it is sin.
ato ya. h ka"scit satkarmma kartta. m viditvaa tanna karoti tasya paapa. m jaayate|
