Deuteronomy 2
1 “And we turn and journey into the wilderness, the way of the Red Sea, as YHWH has spoken to me, and we go around Mount Seir [for] many days.
Allora cambiammo direzione e partimmo per il deserto verso il Mare Rosso, come il Signore mi aveva detto, e girammo intorno al monte Seir per lungo tempo.
2 And YHWH speaks to me, saying,
Il Signore mi disse:
3 For you go around this mountain long enough; turn for yourselves northward.
Avete girato abbastanza intorno a questa montagna; volgetevi verso settentrione.
4 And the people command you, saying, You are passing over into the border of your brothers, sons of Esau, who are dwelling in Seir, and they are afraid of you; and you have been very watchful;
Dà quest'ordine al popolo: Voi state per passare i confini dei figli di Esaù, vostri fratelli, che dimorano in Seir; essi avranno paura di voi; state bene in guardia:
5 you do not strive with them, for I do not give [any] of their land to you—even the treading of the sole of a foot; I have given Mount Seir to Esau for a possession.
non muovete loro guerra, perché del loro paese io non vi darò neppure quanto ne può calcare la pianta di un piede; infatti ho dato il monte di Seir in proprietà a Esaù.
6 You buy food from them with money, and have eaten; and you also buy water from them with money, and have drunk.
Comprerete da loro con denaro le vettovaglie che mangerete e comprerete da loro con denaro anche l'acqua da bere.
7 For your God YHWH has blessed you in all the work of your hands; He has known your walking in this great wilderness these forty years; your God YHWH [is] with you; you have not lacked anything.
Perché il Signore tuo Dio ti ha benedetto in ogni lavoro delle tue mani, ti ha seguito nel tuo viaggio attraverso questo grande deserto; il Signore tuo Dio è stato con te in questi quaranta anni e non ti è mancato nulla.
8 And we pass by from our brothers, sons of Esau, who are dwelling in Seir, by the way of the plain, by Elath and by Ezion-Gaber, and we turn and pass over the way of the wilderness of Moab;
Allora passammo oltre i nostri fratelli, i figli di Esaù, che abitano in Seir, lungo la via dell'Araba, per Elat ed Ezion-Gheber. Poi ci voltammo e avanzammo in direzione del deserto di Moab.
9 and YHWH says to me, Do not distress Moab, nor stir yourself up against them [in] battle, for I do not give [any] of their land to you [for] a possession; for I have given Ar to the sons of Lot [for] a possession.
Il Signore mi disse: Non attaccare Moab e non gli muovere guerra, perché io non ti darò nulla da possedere nel suo paese; infatti ho dato Ar ai figli di Lot, come loro proprietà.
10 The Emim have formerly dwelt in it, a people great, and numerous, and tall as the Anakim;
Prima vi abitavano gli Emim: popolo grande, numeroso, alto di statura come gli Anakiti.
11 they are reckoned [as] Rephaim, they also, as the Anakim; and the Moabites call them Emim.
Erano anch'essi considerati Refaim come gli Anakiti; ma i Moabiti li chiamavano Emim.
12 And the Horim have formerly dwelt in Seir, but the sons of Esau dispossess them, and destroy them from before them, and dwell in their stead, as Israel has done to the land of his possession which YHWH has given to them.
Anche Seir era prima abitata dagli Hurriti, ma i figli di Esaù li scacciarono, li distrussero e si stabilirono al posto loro, come ha fatto Israele nel paese che possiede e che il Signore gli ha dato.
13 Now rise and pass over the Brook of Zered for yourselves; and we pass over the Brook of Zered.
Ora alzatevi e passate il torrente Zered! E attraversammo il torrente Zered.
14 And the days which we have walked from Kadesh-Barnea until we have passed over the Brook of Zered [are] thirty-eight years, until the consumption of all the generation of the men of battle from the midst of the camp, as YHWH has sworn to them;
La durata del nostro cammino, da Kades-Barnea al passaggio del torrente Zered, fu di trentotto anni, finché tutta quella generazione di uomini atti alla guerra scomparve dall'accampamento, come il Signore aveva loro giurato.
15 and indeed the hand of YHWH has been against them, to destroy them from the midst of the camp until they are consumed.
Anche la mano del Signore era stata contro di loro, per sterminarli dall'accampamento finché fossero annientati.
16 And it comes to pass, when all the men of battle have finished dying from the midst of the people,
Quando tutti quegli uomini atti alla guerra furono passati nel numero dei morti,
17 that YHWH speaks to me, saying,
il Signore mi disse:
18 Today you are passing over the border of Moab, even Ar,
Oggi tu stai per passare i confini di Moab, ad Ar, e ti avvicinerai agli Ammoniti.
19 and [when] you have come near the sons of Ammon, you do not distress them, nor stir yourself up against them, for I do not give [any] of the land of the sons of Ammon to you [for] a possession; for I have given it to the sons of Lot [for] a possession.
Non li attaccare e non muover loro guerra, perché io non ti darò nessun possesso nel paese degli Ammoniti; infatti l'ho dato in proprietà ai figli di Lot.
20 It is reckoned [as] a land of Rephaim, even it; Rephaim formerly dwelt in it, and the Ammonites call them Zamzummim,
Anche questo paese era reputato paese di Refaim: prima vi abitavano i Refaim e gli Ammoniti li chiamavano Zanzummim:
21 a people great, and numerous, and tall as the Anakim, and YHWH destroys them before them, and they dispossess them, and dwell in their stead,
popolo grande, numeroso, alto di statura come gli Anakiti; ma il Signore li aveva distrutti davanti agli Ammoniti, che li avevano scacciati e si erano stabiliti al loro posto.
22 as He has done for the sons of Esau who are dwelling in Seir, when He destroyed the Horim from before them, and they dispossess them, and dwell in their stead to this day.
Così il Signore aveva fatto per i figli di Esaù che abitano in Seir, quando distrusse gli Hurriti davanti a loro; essi li scacciarono e si stabilirono al loro posto e vi sono rimasti fino ad oggi.
23 As for the Avim who are dwelling in villages as far as Gaza, the Caphtorim—who are coming out from Caphtor—have destroyed them, and dwell in their stead.
Anche gli Avviti, che dimoravano in villaggi fino a Gaza, furono distrutti dai Kaftoriti, usciti da Kaftor, i quali si stabilirono al loro posto.
24 Rise, journey, and pass over the Brook of Arnon; see, I have given into your hand Sihon king of Heshbon, the Amorite, and his land; begin to possess [it], and stir yourself up against him [in] battle.
Suvvia, levate l'accampamento e passate la valle dell'Arnon; ecco io metto in tuo potere Sicon, l'Amorreo, re di Chesbon, e il suo paese; comincia a prenderne possesso e muovigli guerra.
25 This [is] the day I begin to put your dread and your fear on the face of the peoples under the whole heavens, who hear your fame, and have trembled and been pained because of you.
Oggi comincerò a incutere paura e terrore di te ai popoli che sono sotto tutto il cielo, così che, all'udire la tua fama, tremeranno e saranno presi da spavento dinanzi a te.
26 And I send messengers from the wilderness of Kedemoth to Sihon king of Heshbon, [with] words of peace, saying,
Allora mandai messaggeri dal deserto di Kedemot a Sicon, re di Chesbon, con parole di pace, e gli feci dire:
27 Let me pass over through your land; in the way—in the way I go, I do not turn aside [to the] right or left.
Lasciami passare nel tuo paese; io camminerò per la strada maestra, senza volgermi né a destra né a sinistra.
28 You sell me food for money, and I have eaten; and you give to me water for money, and I have drunk; only, let me pass over on my feet,
Tu mi venderai per denaro contante le vettovaglie che mangerò e mi darai per denaro contante l'acqua che berrò; permittimi solo il transito,
29 as the sons of Esau who are dwelling in Seir and the Moabites who are dwelling in Ar have done for me, until I pass over the Jordan to the land which our God YHWH is giving to us.
come mi hanno permesso i figli di Esaù, che abitano in Seir, e i Moabiti che abitano in Ar, finché io abbia passato il Giordano per entrare nel paese che il Signore nostro Dio sta per darci.
30 And Sihon king of Heshbon has not been willing to let us pass over by him, for your God YHWH has hardened his spirit and strengthened his heart, so as to give him into your hand as at this day.
Ma Sicon, re di Chesbon, non ci volle lasciar passare nel suo paese, perché il Signore tuo Dio gli aveva reso inflessibile lo spirito e ostinato il cuore, per mettertelo nelle mani, come appunto è oggi.
31 And YHWH says to me, See, I have begun to give Sihon and his land before your faces; begin to possess—to possess his land.
Il Signore mi disse: Vedi, ho cominciato a mettere in tuo potere Sicon e il suo paese; dà inizio alla conquista impadronendoti del suo paese.
32 And Sihon comes out to meet us, he and all his people, to the battle at Jahaz;
Allora Sicon uscì contro di noi con tutta la sua gente per darci battaglia a Iaaz.
33 and our God YHWH gives him before our faces, and we strike him, and his sons, and all his people;
Il Signore nostro Dio ce lo mise nelle mani e noi abbiamo sconfitto lui, i suoi figli e tutta la sua gente.
34 and we capture all his cities at that time, and devote the whole city—men, and the women, and the infants; we have not left a remnant;
In quel tempo prendemmo tutte le sue città e votammo allo sterminio ogni città, uomini, donne, bambini; non vi lasciammo alcun superstite.
35 only, we have spoiled the livestock for ourselves, and the spoil of the cities which we have captured.
Soltanto asportammo per noi come preda il bestiame e le spoglie delle città che avevamo prese.
36 From Aroer, which [is] by the edge of the Brook of Arnon, and the city which [is] by the brook, even to Gilead, there has not been a city which [is] too high for us; our God YHWH has given the whole before our faces.
Da Aroer, che è sull'orlo della valle dell'Arnon, e dalla città che è sul torrente stesso, fino a Gàlaad, non ci fu città che fosse inaccessibile per noi: il Signore nostro Dio le mise tutte in nostro potere.
37 Only, you have not drawn near to the land of the sons of Ammon—any part of the Brook of Jabbok, and cities of the hill-country, and anything which our God YHWH has [not] commanded.”
Ma non ti avvicinasti al paese degli Ammoniti, a tutta la riva dal torrente Iabbok, alle città delle montagne, a tutti i luoghi che il Signore nostro Dio ci aveva proibito di attaccare.
