2 Kings 19
1 And it came to pass, when king Hezekiah heard it, that he rent his clothes, and covered himself with sackcloth, and went into the house of the Lord.
Lorsque le roi Ézéchias l'apprit, il déchira ses vêtements, se couvrit d'un sac et entra dans la maison de Yahvé.
2 And he sent Elyakim, who was superintendent over the house, and Shebnah the scribe, and the elders of the priests, covered with sackcloth, to Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz.
Il envoya Eliakim, chef de la maison, Shebna, le scribe, et les anciens des prêtres, couverts de sacs, vers Ésaïe, le prophète, fils d'Amoz.
3 And they said unto him, Thus hath said Hezekiah, A day of trouble, and of rebuke, and derision is this day; for the children are come to the birth, and there is not strength to bring forth.
Ils lui dirent: « Ézéchias dit: 'C'est aujourd'hui un jour de détresse, de réprimande et de rejet, car les enfants sont sur le point de naître, et il n'y a pas de force pour les délivrer.
4 Perhaps the Lord thy God will hear all the words of Rabshakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master hath sent to blaspheme the living God; and who hath reproached with the words which the Lord thy God hath heard: wherefore lift up a prayer in behalf of the remnant that is still found here.
Il se peut que Yahvé ton Dieu entende toutes les paroles de Rabschaké, que le roi d'Assyrie, son maître, a envoyé pour défier le Dieu vivant, et qu'il réprouve les paroles que Yahvé ton Dieu a entendues. C'est pourquoi tu dois élever ta prière pour le reste qui est resté. »
5 And the servants of king Hezekiah came to Isaiah.
Les serviteurs du roi Ézéchias vinrent auprès d'Ésaïe.
6 And Isaiah said unto them, Thus shall ye say to your master, Thus hath said the Lord, Be not afraid because of the words which thou hast heard, with which the boys of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me.
Ésaïe leur dit: « Dites ceci à votre maître: Yahvé dit: « Ne craignez pas les paroles que vous avez entendues et par lesquelles les serviteurs du roi d'Assyrie m'ont blasphémé.
7 Behold, I will put an [other] spirit in him, that when he will hear a rumor, he shall return to his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.
Voici, je vais mettre un esprit en lui, il entendra des nouvelles, et il retournera dans son pays. Je le ferai tomber par l'épée dans son pays. »'"
8 And Rabshakeh returned, and found the king of Assyria warring against Libnah; for he had heard that he was departed from Lachish.
Rabschaké revint donc et trouva le roi d'Assyrie en guerre contre Libna, car il avait appris qu'il était parti de Lakis.
9 And he heard it said of Thirhakah the king of Ethiopia, Behold, he is come out to fight with thee; and he again sent messengers unto Hezekiah, saying,
Lorsqu'il entendit dire de Tirhakah, roi d'Éthiopie: « Voici qu'il est sorti pour te combattre », il envoya de nouveau des messagers à Ézéchias, en disant:
10 Thus shall ye say to Hezekiah the king of Judah, as followeth, Let not thy God in whom thou trustest deceive thee, saying, Jerusalem shall not be given up into the hand of the king of Assyria.
« Dis ceci à Ézéchias, roi de Juda: Ne laisse pas ton Dieu, en qui tu as confiance, te tromper en disant: Jérusalem ne sera pas livrée entre les mains du roi d'Assyrie.
11 Behold, thou thyself hast heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all the lands, by destroying them utterly: and thou alone shouldst be delivered?
Voici, tu as entendu ce que les rois d'Assyrie ont fait à tous les pays, en les détruisant par interdit. Serez-vous délivrés?
12 Have the gods of the nations which my fathers destroyed delivered them; as Gozan, and Charan, and Rezeph, and the children of 'Eden, who were in Thelassar?
Les dieux des nations ont-ils délivré ceux que mes pères ont détruits: Gozan, Haran, Rezeph, et les enfants d'Eden qui étaient à Telassar?
13 Where is the king of Chamath, and the king of Arpad, and the king of the city of Sepharvayim, of Hena', and 'Ivvah?
Où est le roi de Hamath, le roi d'Arpad, et le roi de la ville de Sépharvaïm, de Héna et d'Ivva? »
14 And Hezekiah took the letters out of the hand of the messengers, and read them: and Hezekiah went up into the house of the Lord, and spread them out before the Lord.
Ézéchias reçut la lettre de la main des messagers et la lut. Puis Ézéchias monta à la maison de l'Éternel, et la déploya devant l'Éternel.
15 And Hezekiah prayed before the Lord, and said, O Lord God of Israel, who dwellest between the cherubims, thou art the [true] God, thou alone, for all the kingdoms of the earth; for it is thou who hast made the heavens and the earth.
Ézéchias pria devant Yahvé et dit: « Yahvé, le Dieu d'Israël, qui trône au-dessus des chérubins, tu es le Dieu, toi seul, de tous les royaumes de la terre. Tu as fait le ciel et la terre.
16 Bend down, O Lord, thy ear, and hear! open, O Lord, thy eyes, and see! and hear the words of Sennacherib, that which he hath sent to blaspheme the living God.
Incline ton oreille, Yahvé, et écoute. Ouvre tes yeux, Yahvé, et regarde. Écoute les paroles de Sennacherib, qu'il a envoyées pour défier le Dieu vivant.
17 Truly, Lord, the kings of Assyria have devastated the nations and their land,
En vérité, Yahvé, les rois d'Assyrie ont dévasté les nations et leurs pays,
18 And they have placed their gods into the fire; for they are no gods, but the work of man's hands, wood and stone: and these have they destroyed.
et ils ont jeté au feu leurs dieux, qui n'étaient pas des dieux, mais l'ouvrage de mains d'hommes, du bois et de la pierre. C'est pourquoi ils les ont détruits.
19 And now, O Lord our God, save us, I beseech thee, out of his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that thou art the Lord God, thou alone.
Maintenant, Yahvé notre Dieu, sauve-nous, je t'en prie, de sa main, afin que tous les royaumes de la terre sachent que toi, Yahvé, tu es Dieu seul. »
20 Then sent Isaiah the son of Amoz to Hezekiah, saying, Thus hath said the Lord the God of Israel, What thou hast prayed to me concerning Sennacherib the king of Assyria have I heard.
Alors Ésaïe, fils d'Amoz, envoya à Ézéchias, en disant: « Yahvé, le Dieu d'Israël, dit: 'Tu m'as prié contre Sennacherib, roi d'Assyrie, et je t'ai entendu.
21 This is the word that the Lord hath spoken over him: She despiseth thee, she laugheth thee to scorn, the virgin daughter of Zion; behind thee shaketh her head the daughter of Jerusalem.
Voici la parole que Yahvé a prononcée à son sujet: « La vierge de Sion t'a méprisé et s'est moqué de toi. La fille de Jérusalem a secoué la tête devant toi.
22 Whom hast thou blasphemed, and [whom] hast thou scorned? and against whom hast thou raised thy voice, and lifted up thy eyes on high? against the Holy One of Israel.
Qui as-tu défié et blasphémé? Contre qui avez-vous élevé votre voix et levé les yeux en haut? Contre le Saint d'Israël!
23 By thy messengers thou hast blasphemed the Lord and hast said, With the multitude of my chariots am I indeed come up to the height of the mountains, to the sides of Lebanon, and I will cut down its tall cedars, the choice of its fir-trees: and I will enter into the lodgings on its summit, the forest of its fruitful soil.
Par tes messagers, tu as défié l'Éternel, et tu as dit: Avec la multitude de mes chars, je suis monté jusqu'à la hauteur des montagnes, jusqu'au fond du Liban, et j'abattrai ses grands cèdres et ses beaux cyprès; j'entrerai dans son gîte le plus éloigné, dans la forêt de son champ fertile.
24 I have dug and drunk strange waters, and I will dry up with the sole of my feet all the streams of besieged places.
J'ai creusé et bu des eaux étrangères, et je mettrai à sec tous les fleuves d'Égypte avec la plante de mes pieds. »
25 Hadst thou not heard that in distant ages I had prepared this? in the times of antiquity when I formed it? now have I brought it along, and it came to pass, to desolate into ruinous heaps fortified cities.
N'avez-vous pas entendu que je l'ai fait dès longtemps, que je l'ai formé dès les temps anciens? Maintenant, j'ai fait en sorte que ce soit à toi de réduire les villes fortifiées en monceaux de ruines.
26 And thus their inhabitants were short of power, they were dismayed and confounded; they were as the herbs of the field, and as the green grass; as the moss on the housetops, and as corn blasted before the ear appeareth.
Aussi leurs habitants avaient-ils peu de force. Ils étaient consternés et confus. Ils étaient comme l'herbe des champs et comme l'herbe verte, comme l'herbe des toits et comme le grain arraché avant qu'il ait poussé.
27 But thy abiding and thy going out and thy coming in do I know, and thy raging against me.
Mais je sais que tu t'assieds, que tu sors, que tu entres, et que tu te déchaînes contre moi.
28 Because of thy raging against me and thy tumult that is come up into my ears, will I put my hook in thy nose, and my bridle between thy lips; and I will cause thee to turn back on the way by which thou camest.
Parce que tu t'es déchaîné contre moi et que ton arrogance est montée jusqu'à mes oreilles, je mettrai mon crochet à ton nez et ma bride à tes lèvres, et je te ferai revenir par le chemin par lequel tu es venu.
29 And this shall be unto thee the sign, Ye shall eat this year what groweth of itself, and in the second year what springeth up after the same; and in the third year sow and reap, and plant vineyards, and eat their fruit.
« Voici le signe qui vous sera donné: Cette année, vous mangerez ce qui pousse de lui-même, et la seconde année, ce qui en jaillit; la troisième année, vous sèmerez et moissonnerez, vous planterez des vignes et vous mangerez leurs fruits.
30 And the remnant of the house of Judah that is escaped shall yet again strike root downward, and bear fruit upward.
Le reste échappé de la maison de Juda reprendra racine en bas, et portera du fruit en haut.
31 For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant, and that which escapeth out of mount Zion: the zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.
Car c'est de Jérusalem que sortira un reste, et de la montagne de Sion que sortiront ceux qui auront échappé. C'est le zèle de Yahvé qui accomplira cela.
32 Therefore thus hath said the Lord concerning the king of Assyria, He shall not come into this city, and he shall not shoot an arrow thereon, nor come before it with shield, nor cast up against it an embankment.
« C'est pourquoi Yahvé dit à propos du roi d'Assyrie: « Il n'entrera pas dans cette ville et n'y décochera pas une flèche. Il ne s'avancera pas devant elle avec un bouclier, et il ne dressera pas contre elle un monticule.
33 On the way by which he came, by the same shall he return, and into this city shall he not come, saith the Lord.
Il retournera par le même chemin qu'il est venu, et il ne viendra pas dans cette ville, dit l'Éternel.
34 And I will shield this city, to save it, for my own sake, and for the sake of David my servant.
Car je défendrai cette ville pour la sauver, à cause de moi et à cause de mon serviteur David. »
35 And it came to pass, on the same night, that an angel of the Lord went out and smote in the camp of the Assyrians one hundred eighty and five thousand men: and when people arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses.
Cette nuit-là, l'ange de Yahvé sortit et frappa cent quatre-vingt-cinq mille personnes dans le camp des Assyriens. Quand les hommes se levèrent de bon matin, voici, tous ces gens étaient morts.
36 And Sennacherib the king of Assyria then departed, and went and returned, and dwelt at Nineveh.
Alors Sennacherib, roi d'Assyrie, s'en alla, rentra chez lui et s'établit à Ninive.
37 And it came to pass, as he was prostrating himself in the house of Nisroch his god, that Adrammelech and Sharezer his sons smote him with the sword: and they escaped into the land of Ararat. And Essar-chaddon his son became king in his stead.
Comme il se prosternait dans la maison de Nisroch, son dieu, Adrammelech et Sharezer le frappèrent de l'épée, et ils s'enfuirent au pays d'Ararat. Esar Haddon, son fils, régna à sa place.
