Job 41
1 But will you catch the serpent with a hook, and put a halter about his nose?
Kannst du das Krokodil am Angelhaken heranziehen und ihm die Zunge mit der Schnur niederdrücken?
2 Or will you fasten a ring in his nostril, and bore his lip with a clasp?
Kannst du ihm einen Binsenring durch die Nase ziehen und einen Dorn durch seinen Kinnbacken bohren?
3 Will he address you with a petition? softly, with the voice of a suppliant?
Meinst du, es werde viele Bitten an dich richten oder dir gute Worte geben?
4 And will he make a covenant with you? and will you take him for a perpetual servant?
Wird es einen Vertrag mit dir schließen, wonach du es für immer in deine Dienste nähmest?
5 And will you play with him as with a bird? or bind him as a sparrow for a child?
Wirst du mit ihm spielen wie mit einem Vöglein und es zur Kurzweil für deine Mägdlein anbinden?
6 And do the nations feed upon him, and the nations of the Phoenicians share him?
Treibt die Fischerzunft Handel mit ihm, daß sie es stückweise an die Händler abgibt?
7 And all the ships come together would not be able to bear the mere skin of his tail; neither [shall they carry] his head in fishing vessels.
Kannst du ihm die Haut mit Spießen spicken und seinen Kopf mit Fischerhaken durchbohren?
8 But you shall lay your hand upon him [once], remembering the war that is waged by his mouth; and let it not be done any more.
Vergreife dich nur einmal an ihm: mache dich auf Kampf gefaßt! Du wirst’s gewiß nicht wieder tun!
9 Hast you not seen him? and have you not wondered at the things said [of him]?
Ja, eine solche Hoffnung erweist sich als Trug: schon bei seinem Anblick bricht man zusammen.
10 Do you not fear because preparation has been made by me? for who is there that resists me?
Niemand ist so tollkühn, daß er es aufstört; und wer ist es, der ihm entgegengetreten und heil davongekommen wäre?
11 Or who will resist me, and abide, since the whole [world] under heaven is mine?
Wer unter dem ganzen Himmel ist es?
12 I will not be silent because of him: though because of his power [one] shall pity his antagonist.
Nicht schweigen will ich von seinen Gliedmaßen, weder von seiner Kraftfülle noch von der Schönheit seines Baues.
13 Who will open the face of his garment? and who can enter within the fold of his breastplate?
Wer hat je sein Panzerkleid oben aufgedeckt und wer sich in die Doppelreihe seines Gebisses hineingewagt?
14 Who will open the doors of his face? terror is round about his teeth.
Wer hat je das Doppeltor seines Rachens geöffnet? Rings um seine Zähne herum lagert Schrecken.
15 His inwards are as brazen plates, and the texture of his [skin] as a smyrite stone.
Prachtvoll sind die Zeilen seiner Schilder, jede einzelne enganliegend wie durch ein festes Siegel:
16 One [part] cleaves fast to another, and the air can’t come between them.
eine schließt sich eng an die andere an, und kein Lüftchen dringt zwischen ihnen ein:
17 They will remain united each to the other: they are closely joined, and can’t be separated.
jede haftet fest an der andern, sie greifen untrennbar ineinander.
18 At his sneezing a light shines, and his eyes are [as] the appearance of the morning star.
Sein Niesen läßt einen Lichtschein erglänzen, und seine Augen gleichen den Wimpern des Morgenrots.
19 Out of his mouth proceed as it were burning lamps, and as it were hearths of fire are cast abroad.
Aus seinem Rachen schießen Flammen, sprühen Feuerfunken hervor.
20 Out of his nostrils proceeds smoke of a furnace burning with fire of coals.
Aus seinen Nüstern strömt Rauch heraus wie aus einem siedenden Topf und wie aus Binsenfeuer.
21 His breath is [as] live coals, and a flame goes out of his mouth.
Sein Atem setzt Kohlen in Brand, und Flammen entfahren seinem Rachen.
22 And power is lodged in his neck, before him destruction runs.
In seinem Nacken wohnt Kraft, und vor ihm her stürmt bange Furcht dahin.
23 The flesh also of his body is joined together: [if one] pours [violence] upon him, he shall not be moved.
Die Wampen seines Leibes haften fest zusammen, sind wie angegossen an ihm, unbeweglich.
24 His heart is firm as a stone, and it stands like an unyielding anvil.
Sein Herz ist hart wie ein Stein und unbeweglich wie ein unterer Mühlstein.
25 And when he turns, [he is] a terror to the four-footed wild beasts which leap upon the earth.
Wenn es auffährt, schaudern selbst Helden, geraten vor Entsetzen außer sich.
26 If spears should come against him, [men] will effect nothing, [either with] the spear or the breast-plate.
Trifft man es mit dem Schwert – das haftet ebensowenig wie Speer, Wurfspieß und Pfeil.
27 For he considers iron as chaff, and brass as rotten wood.
Eisen achtet es gleich Stroh, Erz gleich morschem Holz.
28 The bow of brass shall not would him, he deems a slinger as grass.
Kein Pfeil des Bogens bringt es zum Fliehen; Schleudersteine verwandeln sich ihm in Spreu.
29 Mauls are counted as stubble; and he laughs to scorn the waving of the firebrand.
Wie ein Strohhalm kommt ihm die Keule vor, und nur ein Lächeln hat es für den Anprall der Lanze.
30 His lair is [formed of] sharp points; and all the gold of the sea under him is an immense [quantity of] clay.
Seine Unterseite bilden spitze Scherben; einen breiten Dreschschlitten drückt es in den Schlamm ein.
31 He makes the deep boil like a brazen caldron; and he regards the sea as a pot of ointment,
Es macht die tiefe Wasserflut wie einen Kochtopf sieden, rührt das Meer auf wie einen Salbenkessel.
32 and the lowest part of the deep as a captive: he reckons the deep as [his] range.
Hinter ihm her leuchtet sein Pfad: man könnte die Schaumflut für Silberhaar halten.
33 There is nothing upon the earth like to him, formed to be sported with by my angels.
Auf Erden gibt es nicht seinesgleichen; es ist dazu geschaffen, sich nie zu fürchten.
34 He beholds every high thing: and he is king of all that are in the waters.
Auf alles Hohe sieht es mit Verachtung hin: der König ist es über alle stolzen Tiere.«
