Proverbs 23
1 When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider well him that is before thee;
Wenn du zu Tische sitzest mit einem Herrscher, so bedenke, wen du vor dir hast!
2 And put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite.
Setze ein Messer an deine Kehle, wenn du allzu gierig bist!
3 Be not desirous of his dainties; seeing they are deceitful food.
Laß dich nicht gelüsten nach seinen Leckerbissen; denn das ist ein trügerisches Brot!
4 Weary not thyself to be rich; cease from thine own wisdom.
Bemühe dich nicht, reich zu werden; aus eigener Einsicht laß davon!
5 Wilt thou set thine eyes upon it? it is gone; for riches certainly make themselves wings, like an eagle that flieth toward heaven.
Kaum hast du dein Auge darauf geworfen, so ist er nicht mehr da; denn sicherlich schafft er sich Flügel wie ein Adler, der gen Himmel fliegt.
6 Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainties;
Iß kein Brot bei einem Mißgünstigen und sei nicht begierig nach seinen Leckerbissen!
7 For as one that hath reckoned within himself, so is he: 'Eat and drink', saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.
Denn so sehr es ihm auch in der Seele zuwider ist, so spricht er doch zu dir: «Iß und trink!» aber er gönnt es dir nicht.
8 The morsel which thou hast eaten shalt thou vomit up, and lose thy sweet words.
Den Bissen, den du gegessen hast, mußt du wieder ausspeien, und deine freundlichen Worte hast du verschwendet.
9 Speak not in the ears of a fool; for he will despise the wisdom of thy words.
Sprich keinem Toren zu; denn er wird deine weisen Reden nur verachten!
10 Remove not the ancient landmark; and enter not into the fields of the fatherless;
Verrücke die Grenze der Witwe nicht und betritt nicht das Feld der Waisen!
11 For their Redeemer is strong; He will plead their cause with thee.
Denn ihr Erlöser ist stark; der wird ihre Sache wider dich führen.
12 Apply thy heart unto instruction, and thine ears to the words of knowledge.
Ergib dein Herz der Zucht und neige deine Ohren zu den Lehren der Erfahrung.
13 Withhold not correction from the child; for though thou beat him with the rod, he will not die.
Erspare dem Knaben die Züchtigung nicht; wenn du ihn mit der Rute schlägst, stirbt er nicht.
Indem du ihn mit der Rute schlägst, rettest du seine Seele vom Tode. (Sheol h7585)
15 My son, if thy heart be wise, my heart will be glad, even mine;
Mein Sohn, wenn dein Herz weise wird, so ist das auch für mein Herz eine Freude!
16 Yea, my reins will rejoice, when thy lips speak right things.
Und meine Nieren frohlocken, wenn deine Lippen reden, was richtig ist.
17 Let not thy heart envy sinners, but be in the fear of the LORD all the day;
Dein Herz ereifere sich nicht für die Sünder, sondern für die Furcht des HERRN den ganzen Tag!
18 For surely there is a future; and thy hope shall not be cut off.
Denn sicherlich gibt es eine Zukunft, und deine Hoffnung soll nicht vernichtet werden.
19 Hear thou, my son, and be wise, and guide thy heart in the way.
Höre, mein Sohn, sei weise, und dein Herz wandle den richtigen Weg!
20 Be not among winebibbers; among gluttonous eaters of flesh;
Geselle dich nicht zu den Weinsäufern und zu denen, die sich übermäßigem Fleischgenuß ergeben;
21 For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty; and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.
denn Säufer und Schlemmer verarmen, und Schläfrigkeit kleidet in Lumpen.
22 Hearken unto thy father that begot thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old.
Gehorche deinem Vater, der dich gezeugt hat, und verachte deine Mutter nicht, wenn sie alt wird.
23 Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.
Kaufe Wahrheit und verkaufe sie nicht, Weisheit und Zucht und Vernunft!
24 The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice; and he that begetteth a wise child will have joy of him.
Ein Vater frohlockt über einen rechtschaffenen Sohn, und wer einen Weisen gezeugt hat, freut sich über ihn.
25 Let thy father and thy mother be glad, and let her that bore thee rejoice.
So mögen sich denn Vater und Mutter deiner freuen und frohlocken, die dich geboren hat!
26 My son, give me thy heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways.
Gib mir, mein Sohn, dein Herz, und laß deinen Augen meine Wege wohlgefallen!
27 For a harlot is a deep ditch; and an alien woman is a narrow pit.
Denn die Hure ist eine tiefe Grube, und die Fremde ist ein gefährliches Loch.
28 She also lieth in wait as a robber, and increaseth the faithless among men.
Dazu lauert sie wie ein Räuber und vermehrt die Abtrünnigen unter den Menschen.
29 Who crieth: 'Woe'? who: 'Alas'? who hath contentions? who hath raving? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes?
Wo ist Ach? Wo ist Weh? Wo sind Streitigkeiten? Wo ist Klage? Wo sind Wunden ohne Ursache? Wo sind trübe Augen?
30 They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to try mixed wine.
Bei denen, die sich beim Wein verspäten, die kommen, um Getränke zu versuchen!
31 Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth its colour in the cup, when it glideth down smoothly;
Siehe nicht darauf, wie der Wein rötlich schillert, wie er im Becher perlt!
32 At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like a basilisk.
Er gleitet leicht hinunter; aber hernach beißt er wie eine Schlange und sticht wie eine Otter!
33 Thine eyes shall behold strange things, and thy heart shall utter confused things.
Deine Augen werden seltsame Dinge sehen, und dein Herz wird verworrenes Zeug reden;
34 Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast.
du wirst sein wie einer, der auf dem Meere schläft und wie einer, der im Mastkorb oben liegt.
35 'They have struck me, and I felt it not, they have beaten me, and I knew it not; when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.'
«Man schlug mich, aber es tat mir nicht weh; man prügelte mich, aber ich merkte es nicht! Wenn ich ausgeschlafen habe, so will ich ihn wieder aufsuchen!»
