Genesis 38

1 And it came to pass at that time, that Judah went down from his brethren, and turned in to a certain Adullamite, whose name was Hirah.

Dans le même temps, Juda, s’éloignant de ses frères, alla loger chez un homme d’Odollam, du nom d’Hiras.

2 And Judah saw there a daughter of a certain Canaanite whose name was Shua; and he took her, and went in unto her.

Et il vit là la fille d’un homme de Chanaan, du nom de Sué, et l’ayant prise pour femme, il vécut avec elle.

3 And she conceived, and bore a son; and he called his name Er.

Elle conçut et enfanta un fils, et elle lui donna le nom de Her.

4 And she conceived again, and bore a son; and she called his name Onan.

Et ayant conçu une seconde fois, elle nomma le fils qui naquit Onan.

5 And she yet again bore a son, and called his name Shelah; and he was at Chezib, when she bore him.

Elle en enfanta aussi un troisième, qu’elle appela Séla: celui-ci né, elle cessa d’enfanter davantage.

6 And Judah took a wife for Er his first-born, and her name was Tamar.

Or Juda donna à son premier-né Her une femme du nom de Thamar.

7 And Er, Judah's first-born, was wicked in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD slew him.

Mais Her, le premier-né de Juda, fut très méchant eu la présence du Seigneur; et par le Seigneur il fut frappé de mort.

8 And Judah said unto Onan: 'Go in unto thy brother's wife, and perform the duty of a husband's brother unto her, and raise up seed to thy brother.'

Juda dit donc à Onan, son fils: Prends la femme de ton frère, et unis-toi à elle pour susciter des enfants à ton frère.

9 And Onan knew that the seed would not be his; and it came to pass when he went in unto his brother's wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest he should give seed to his brother.

Mais celui-ci sachant que les enfants qui naîtraient de son union avec la femme de son frère ne seraient pas à lui, empêchait qu’elle ne devînt mère, pour ne pas qu’il naquît des enfants du nom de son frère.

10 And the thing which he did was evil in the sight of the LORD; and He slew him also.

Et c’est pourquoi le Seigneur le frappa, parce qu’il faisait une chose détestable.

11 Then said Judah to Tamar his daughter-in-law: 'Remain a widow in thy father's house, till Shelah my son be grown up'; for he said: 'Lest he also die, like his brethren.' And Tamar went and dwelt in her father's house.

A cause de cela Juda dit à Thamar sa belle-fille: Reste veuve dans la maison de ton père, jusqu’à ce que Séla mon fils soit devenu grand; car il craignait que lui aussi ne mourût comme ses frères. Celle-ci s’en alla et habita dans la maison de son père.

12 And in process of time Shua's daughter, the wife of Judah, died; and Judah was comforted, and went up unto his sheep-shearers to Timnah, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite.

Mais bien des jours s’étant écoulés, mourut la fille de Sué, femme de Juda, qui s’étant consolé après le deuil, montait à Thamnas vers les tondeurs de brebis, lui et Hiras d’Odollam, pasteur de ses troupeaux.

13 And it was told Tamar, saying: 'Behold, thy father-in-law goeth up to Timnah to shear his sheep.'

Or on annonça à Thamar que son beau-père montait à Thamnas pour tondre ses brebis.

14 And she put off from her the garments of her widowhood, and covered herself with her veil, and wrapped herself, and sat in the entrance of Enaim, which is by the way to Timnah; for she saw that Shelah was grown up, and she was not given unto him to wife.

Celle-ci, ses habits de veuvage quittés, prit un voile, et s’étant déguisée, elle s’assit dans le carrefour du chemin qui conduit à Thamnas, parce que Séla était déjà devenu grand, et qu’elle ne l’avait pas eu pour époux.

15 When Judah saw her, he thought her to be a harlot; for she had covered her face.

Lorsque Juda l’eut aperçue, il crut que c’était une femme de mauvaise vie; car elle avait couvert son visage, afin qu’elle ne fût pas reconnue.

16 And he turned unto her by the way, and said: 'Come, I pray thee, let me come in unto thee'; for he knew not that she was his daughter-in-law. And she said: 'What wilt thou give me, that thou mayest come in unto me?'

Et s’approchant d’elle, il dit: Laisse-moi aller avec toi; car il ne savait pas qu’elle fût sa belle-fille. Elle répondant: Que me donneras-tu pour que tu viennes avec moi?

17 And he said: 'I will send thee a kid of the goats from the flock.' And she said: 'Wilt thou give me a pledge, till thou send it?'

Il dit: Je t’enverrai un chevreau de mes troupeaux. Mais elle reprenant: Je consentirai à ce que tu veux, si tu me donnes un gage, en attendant que tu envoies ce que tu promets.

18 And he said: 'What pledge shall I give thee?' And she said: 'Thy signet and thy cord, and thy staff that is in thy hand.' And he gave them to her, and came in unto her, and she conceived by him.

Juda lui demanda: Que veux-tu que je te donne pour gage? Elle répondit: Ton anneau, ton bracelet et le bâton que tu liens à la main. Ayant donc vu Juda une seule fois, cette femme conçut,

19 And she arose, and went away, and put off her veil from her, and put on the garments of her widowhood.

Et se levant, elle s’en alla; puis ayant quitté le vêtement qu’elle avait pris, elle se revêtit de ses habits de veuvage.

20 And Judah sent the kid of the goats by the hand of his friend the Adullamite, to receive the pledge from the woman's hand; but he found her not.

Or Juda envoya le chevreau par son pasteur qui était d’Odollam, afin qu’il retirât le gage qu’il avait donné à cette femme; celui-ci ne l’ayant pas trouvée,

21 Then he asked the men of her place, saying: 'Where is the harlot, that was at Enaim by the wayside?' And they said: 'There hath been no harlot here.'

Demanda aux hommes de ce lieu: Où est cette femme qui était assise dans le carrefour? Tous répondant: Il n’y a pas eu en ce lieu de femme de mauvaise vie.

22 And he returned to Judah, and said: 'I have not found her; and also the men of the place said: There hath been no harlot here.'

Il revint vers Juda et lui dit: Je ne l’ai pas trouvée; et les hommes même de ce lieu m’ont dit que jamais là ne s’est assise femme débauchée.

23 And Judah said: 'Let her take it, lest we be put to shame; behold, I sent this kid, and thou hast not found her.'

Juda répondit: Qu’elle le garde; elle ne peut pas au moins nous accuser de mensonge; moi, j’ai envoyé le chevreau que j’avais promis, et toi, tu ne l’as pas trouvée.

24 And it came to pass about three months after, that it was told Judah, saying: 'Tamar thy daughter-in-law hath played the harlot; and moreover, behold, she is with child by harlotry.' And Judah said: 'Bring her forth, and let her be burnt.'

Mais voilà qu’après trois mois on annonça à Juda cette nouvelle: Thamar ta belle-fille a forniqué, et elle paraît être enceinte. Juda répondit: Produisez-la en public, afin qu’elle soit brûlée.

25 When she was brought forth, she sent to her father-in-law, saying: 'By the man, whose these are, am I with child'; and she said: 'Discern, I pray thee, whose are these, the signet, and the cords, and the staff.'

Thamar, comme elle était conduite au supplice, envoya vers son beau-père, disant: C’est de l’homme à qui sont ces gages que j’ai conçu: vois à qui sont cet anneau, ce bracelet et ce bâton.

26 And Judah acknowledged them, and said: 'She is more righteous than I; forasmuch as I gave her not to Shelah my son.' And he knew her again no more.

Juda, les gages reconnus, dit: Elle est plus juste que moi, puisque je ne l’ai pas donnée à Séla mon fils. Toutefois il ne la connut pas depuis.

27 And it came to pass in the time of her travail, that, behold, twins were in her womb.

Or les couches pressant, parurent deux jumeaux dans son sein; et à la sortie même des enfants, l’un présenta sa main, à laquelle la sage-femme lia un fil d’écarlate, disant:

28 And it came to pass, when she travailed, that one put out a hand; and the midwife took and bound upon his hand a scarlet thread, saying: 'This came out first.'

Celui-ci sortira le premier.

29 And it came to pass, as he drew back his hand, that, behold his brother came out; and she said: 'Wherefore hast thou made a breach for thyself?' Therefore his name was called Perez.

Mais, lui retirant sa main, l’autre sortit; et la sage-femme dit: Pourquoi le mur a-t-il été rompu à cause de toi? Or pour cette raison elle lui donna le nom de Pharès.

30 And afterward came out his brother, that had the scarlet thread upon his hand; and his name was called Zerah.

Ensuite sortit son frère, à la main duquel était le fil d’écarlate; elle l’appela Zara.
