Numbers 32

1 Nowe the children of Reuben, and the children of Gad had an exceeding great multitude of cattell: and they sawe the lande of Iazer, and the lande of Gilead, that it was an apt place for cattel.

ルベンの子孫とガドの子孫とは非常に多くの家畜の群れを持っていた。彼らがヤゼルの地と、ギレアデの地とを見ると、そこは家畜を飼うのに適していたので、

2 Then the children of Gad, and the childre of Reuben came, and spake vnto Moses and to Eleazar the Priest, and vnto the princes of the Congregation, saying,

ガドの子孫とルベンの子孫とがきて、モーセと、祭司エレアザルと、会衆のつかさたちとに言った、

3 The land of Ataroth, and Dibon, and Iazer, and Nimrah, and Heshbon, and Elealeh, and Shebam, and Nebo, and Beon,

「アタロテ、デボン、ヤゼル、ニムラ、ヘシボン、エレアレ、シバム、ネボ、ベオン、

4 Which countrey the Lord smote before the Congregation of Israel, is a lande meete for cattell, and thy seruants haue cattell:

すなわち主がイスラエルの会衆の前に撃ち滅ぼされた国は、家畜を飼うのに適した地ですが、しもべらは家畜を持っています」。

5 Wherefore, said they, if we haue foud grace in thy sight, let this lande be giuen vnto thy seruants for a possession, and bring vs not ouer Iorde.

彼らはまた言った、「それでもし、あなたの恵みを得られますなら、どうぞこの地をしもべらの領地にして、われわれにヨルダンを渡らせないでください」。

6 And Moses said vnto the children of Gad, and to the children of Reuben, Shall your brethren goe to warre, and ye tary heere?

モーセはガドの子孫とルベンの子孫とに言った、「あなたがたは兄弟が戦いに行くのに、ここにすわっていようというのか。

7 Wherefore now discourage ye the heart of the children of Israel, to goe ouer into the lande, which the Lord hath giuen them?

どうしてあなたがたはイスラエルの人々の心をくじいて、主が彼らに与えられる地に渡ることができないようにするのか。

8 Thus did your fathers when I sent them from Kadesh-barnea to see the lande.

あなたがたの先祖も、わたしがカデシ・バルネアから、その地を見るためにつかわした時に、同じようなことをした。

9 For when they went vp euen vnto the riuer of Eshcol, and sawe the land: they discouraged the heart of the childre of Israel, that they woulde not goe into the lande, which the Lord had giuen them.

すなわち彼らはエシコルの谷に行って、その地を見たとき、イスラエルの人々の心をくじいて、主が与えられる地に行くことができないようにした。

10 And the Lordes wrath was kindled the same day, and he did sweare, saying,

そこでその時、主は怒りを発し、誓って言われた、

11 None of the men that came out of Egypt from twentie yeere olde and aboue, shall see the land for the which I sware vnto Abraham, to Izhak, and to Iaakob, because they haue not wholly followed me:

『エジプトから出てきた人々で二十歳以上の者はひとりもわたしがアブラハム、イサク、ヤコブに誓った地を見ることはできない。彼らはわたしに従わなかったからである。

12 Except Caleb the sonne of Iephunneh the Kenesite, and Ioshua the sonne of Nun: for they haue constantly followed the Lord.

ただケニズびとエフンネの子カレブとヌンの子ヨシュアとはそうではない。このふたりは全く主に従ったからである』。

13 And the Lord was very angry with Israel, and made them wander in the wildernesse fourty yeeres, vntill all the generation that had done euill in the sight of the Lord were consumed.

主はこのようにイスラエルにむかって怒りを発し、彼らを四十年のあいだ荒野にさまよわされたので、主の前に悪を行ったその世代の人々は、ついにみな滅びた。

14 And behold, ye are risen vp in your fathers steade as an encrease of sinfull men, still to augment the fierce wrath of the Lord, toward Israel.

あなたがたはその父に代って立った罪びとのやからであって、主のイスラエルに対する激しい怒りをさらに増そうとしている。

15 For if ye turne away from following him, he will yet againe leaue the people in the wildernesse, and ye shall destroy all this folke.

あなたがたがもしそむいて主に従わないならば、主はまたこの民を荒野にすておかれるであろう。そうすればあなたがたはこの民をことごとく滅ぼすに至るであろう」。

16 And they went neere to him, and said, We will builde sheepe foldes here for our sheepe, and for our cattell, and cities for our children.

彼らはモーセのところへ進み寄って言った、「われわれはこの所に、群れのために羊のおりを建て、また子供たちのために町々を建てようと思います。

17 But we our selues will be readie armed to go before the children of Israel, vntill we haue brought them vnto their place: but our childre shall dwell in the defenced cities, because of the inhabitants of the lande.

しかし、われわれは武装してイスラエルの人々の前に進み、彼らをその所へ導いて行きましょう。ただわれわれの子供たちは、この地の住民の害をのがれるため、堅固な町々に住ませておかなければなりません。

18 We will not returne vnto our houses, vntil the children of Israel haue inherited, euery man his inheritance.

われわれはイスラエルの人々が、おのおのその嗣業を受けるまでは、家に帰りません。

19 Neither wil we inherite with them beyond Iorden and on that side, because our inheritance is fallen to vs on this side Iorden Eastwarde.

またわれわれはヨルダンのかなたで彼らとともには嗣業を受けません。われわれはヨルダンのこなた、すなわち東の方で嗣業を受けるからです」。

20 And Moses saide vnto them, If ye will doe this thing, and goe armed before the Lord to warre:

モーセは彼らに言った、「もし、あなたがたがそのようにし、みな武装して主の前に行って戦い、

21 And will goe euery one of you in harnesse ouer Iorden before the Lord, vntill he hath cast out his enemies from his sight:

みな武装して主の前に行ってヨルダン川を渡り、主がその敵を自分の前から追い払われて、

22 And vntill the land be subdued before the Lord, then ye shall returne and be innocent toward the Lord, and toward Israel: and this land shalbe your possession before the Lord.

この国が主の前に征服されて後、帰ってくるならば、あなたがたは主の前にも、イスラエルの前にも、とがめはないであろう。そしてこの地は主の前にあなたがたの所有となるであろう。

23 But if ye will not doe so, beholde, ye haue sinned against the Lord, and be sure, that your sinne will finde you out.

しかし、そうしないならば、あなたがたは主にむかって罪を犯した者となり、その罪は必ず身に及ぶことを知らなければならない。

24 Builde you then cities for your children and folds for your sheepe, and do that ye haue spoke.

あなたがたは子供たちのために町々を建て、羊のために、おりを建てなさい。しかし、あなたがたは約束したことは行わなければならない」。

25 Then the children of Gad and the children of Reuben spake vnto Moses, saying, Thy seruats will doe as my lorde commandeth:

ガドの子孫とルベンの子孫とは、モーセに言った、「しもべらはあなたの命じられたとおりにいたします。

26 Our childre, our wiues, our sheepe, and al our cattell shall remaine there in the cities of Gilead,

われわれの子供たちと妻と羊と、すべての家畜とは、このギレアデの町々に残します。

27 But thy seruants will goe euery one armed to warre before the Lord for to fight, as my lorde saith.

しかし、しもべらはみな武装して、あなたの言われるとおり、主の前に渡って行って戦います」。

28 So concerning them, Moses commanded Eleazar the Priest, and Ioshua the sonne of Nun, and the chiefe fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel:

モーセは彼らのことについて、祭司エレアザルと、ヌンの子ヨシュアと、イスラエルの人々の部族のうちの氏族のかしらたちとに命じた。

29 And Moses said vnto them, If the children of Gad, and the children of Reuben, will go with you ouer Iorden, all armed to fight before the Lord, then when the land is subdued before you, ye shall giue the the lad of Gilead for a possessio:

そしてモーセは彼らに言った、「ガドの子孫と、ルベンの子孫とが、おのおの武装してあなたがたと一緒にヨルダンを渡り、主の前に戦って、その地をあなたがたが征服するならば、あなたがたは彼らにギレアデの地を領地として与えなければならない。

30 But if they will not goe ouer with you armed, then they shall haue their possessions amog you in the land of Canaan.

しかし、もし彼らが武装してあなたがたと一緒に渡って行かないならば、彼らはカナンの地であなたがたのうちに領地を獲なければならない」。

31 And the children of Gad, and the children of Reuben answered, saying, As the Lord hath said vnto thy seruants, so will we doe.

ガドの子孫と、ルベンの子孫とは答えて言った、「しもべらは主が言われたとおりにいたします。

32 We will goe armed before the Lord into the lande of Canaan: that the possession of our inheritance may be to vs on this side Iorden.

われわれは武装して、主の前にカナンの地へ渡って行きますが、ヨルダンのこなたで、われわれの嗣業をもつことにします」。

33 So Moses gaue vnto them, euen to the children of Gad, and to the children of Reuben, and to halfe the tribe of Manasseh the sonne of Ioseph, the kingdome of Sihon King of the Amorites, and the kingdome of Og King of Bashan, the lande with the cities thereof and coastes, euen the cities of the countrey round about.

そこでモーセはガドの子孫と、ルベンの子孫と、ヨセフの子マナセの部族の半ばとに、アモリびとの王シホンの国と、バシャンの王オグの国とを与えた。すなわち、その国およびその領内の町々とその町々の周囲の地とを与えた。

34 Then the children of Gad built Dibon, and Ataroth, and Aroer,

こうしてガドの子孫は、デボン、アタロテ、アロエル、

35 And Atroth, Shophan, and Iazer, and Iogbehah,

アテロテ・ショパン、ヤゼル、ヨグベハ、

36 And Beth-nimrah, and Beth-haran, defenced cities: also sheepe foldes.

ベテニムラ、ベテハランなどの堅固な町々を建て、羊のおりを建てた。

37 And the children of Reuben built Heshbon, and Elealeh, and Kiriathaim,

またルベンの子孫は、ヘシボン、エレアレ、キリヤタイム、

38 And Nebo, and Baal-meon, and turned their names, and Shibmah: and gaue other names vnto the cities which they built.

および後に名を改めたネボと、バアル・メオンの町を建て、またシブマの町を建てた。彼らは建てた町々に新しい名を与えた。

39 And the children of Machir the sonne of Manasseh went to Gilead, and tooke it, and put out the Amorites that dwelt therein.

またマナセの子マキルの子孫はギレアデに行って、そこを取り、その住民アモリびとを追い払ったので、

40 Then Moses gaue Gilead vnto Machir the sonne of Manasseh, and he dwelt therein.

モーセはギレアデをマナセの子マキルに与えてそこに住まわせた。

41 And Iair the sonne of Manasseh went and tooke the small townes thereof, and called them Hauoth Iair.

またマナセの子ヤイルは行って村々を取り、それをハオテヤイルと名づけた。

42 Also Nobah went and tooke Kenath, with the villages thereof and called it Nobah, after his owne name.

またノバは行ってケナテとその村々を取り、自分の名にしたがって、それをノバと名づけた。
