Exodus 1
1 Now these are the names of the children of Israel, which came into Egypt (euery man and his housholde came thither with Iaakob)
Voici les noms des fils d'Israël venus en Égypte avec Jacob, leur père, et qui y entrèrent chacun avec toute sa famille:
2 Reuben, Simeon, Leui, and Iudah,
Ruben, Siméon, Lévi, Juda,
3 Issachar, Zebulun, and Beniamin,
Issachar, Zabulon, Benjamin,
4 Dan, and Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.
Dan et Nephthali, Gad et Aser.
5 So al the soules, that came out of the loines of Iaakob, were seuentie soules: Ioseph was in Egypt already.
Joseph, de son côté, était déjà en Égypte; or, il y avait en tout soixante-quinze âmes provenant de Jacob.
6 Nowe Ioseph died and all his brethren, and that whole generation.
Et Joseph mourut, ainsi que tous ses frères, et toute cette génération.
7 And the children of Israel brought foorth fruite and encreased in aboundance, and were multiplied, and were exceeding mightie, so that the land was full of them.
Puis, les fils d'Israël crûrent et se multiplièrent; ils se répandirent, et ils se fortifièrent beaucoup, beaucoup ils semblaient pulluler de la terre.
8 Then there rose vp a newe King in Egypt, who knewe not Ioseph.
Mais un autre roi s'éleva sur l'Égypte, qui ne connaissait pas Joseph.
9 And he sayde vnto his people, Beholde, the people of the children of Israel are greater and mightier then we.
Et il dit à sa nation: Voilà que cette race des fils d'Israël forme une multitude immense et plus forte que nous.
10 Come, let vs worke wisely with them, least they multiplie, and it come to passe, that if there be warre, they ioyne them selues also vnto our enemies, and fight against vs, and get them out of the land.
Allons donc, et employons contre eux l'artifice, de peur qu'ils ne se multiplient encore; car si une guerre survenait, ils se joindraient aux ennemis, et, nous ayant vaincus, ils sortiraient de cette contrée.
11 Therefore did they set taskemasters ouer them, to keepe the vnder with burdens: and they built the cities Pithom and Raamses for the treasures of Pharaoh.
En conséquence, il établit sur eux des intendants des travaux, afin qu'ils les épuisassent par le labeur; et ils bâtirent des villes fortes au Pharaon: Pitho, Rhamessès et On, aujourd'hui Héliopolis.
12 But the more they vexed them, the more they multiplied and grewe: therefore they were more grieued against the children of Israel.
Mais plus on les opprimait, plus ils devenaient nombreux, plus leur force devenait immense, immense; et les Égyptiens avaient en abomination les fils d'Israël.
13 Wherefore the Egyptians by crueltie caused the children of Israel to serue.
Les Égyptiens opprimaient donc par la force les fils d'Israël.
14 Thus they made them weary of their liues by sore labour in clay and in bricke, and in al worke in the fielde, with all maner of bondage, which they layde vpon them most cruelly.
Et ils affligeaient leur vie par de durs travaux, par l'argile, par la brique, par le labeur des champs; et ils les asservissaient par la violence à tous ces travaux.
15 Moreouer the King of Egypt commanded ye midwiues of the Ebrewe women, (of which the ones name was Shiphrah, and the name of the other Puah)
Alors, le roi des Égyptiens parla aux sages-femmes des Hébreux qui s'appelaient: la première, Séphora, la seconde, Phua.
16 And sayde, When ye doe the office of a midwife to the women of the Ebrewes, and see them on their stooles, if it be a sonne, then yee shall kill him: but if it be a daughter, then let her liue.
Et il dit: Lorsque vous accoucherez des femmes d'Hébreux, et qu'elles auront enfanté, si c'est un garçon, tuez-le; si c'est une fille, conservez-la.
17 Notwithstanding ye midwiues feared God, and did not as the King of Egypt commanded them, but preserued aliue the men children.
Mais les sages-femmes craignirent Dieu, et n'exécutèrent point les ordres du roi d'Égypte; elles laissèrent vivre les enfants mâles.
18 Then the King of Egypt called for the midwiues, and sayde vnto them, Why haue yee done thus, and haue preserued aliue the men children?
Alors, le roi d'Égypte appela les sages-femmes, et leur dit: Pourquoi agissez-vous de la sorte, et laissez-vous vivre les enfants mâles?
19 And the midwiues answered Pharaoh, Because the Ebrewe women are not as the women of Egypt: for they are liuely, and are deliuered yer the midwife come at them.
Et les sages-femmes dirent au Pharaon: Les femmes des Hébreux ne sont pas comme les Égyptiennes; avant l'arrivée des sages-femmes, elles enfantent, et l'accouchement est fait.
20 God therefore prospered the midwiues, and the people multiplied and were very mightie.
Et Dieu fit du bien aux sages-femmes; et le peuple se multiplia et se fortifia beaucoup.
21 And because ye midwiues feared God, therefore he made them houses.
Et parce que les sages-femmes avaient eu la crainte de Dieu, elles se firent de bonnes maisons.
22 Then Pharaoh charged all his people, saying, Euery man childe that is borne, cast yee into the riuer, but reserue euery maide childe aliue.
Le Pharaon donna aussi ses ordres à son peuple, disant: Tout enfant mâle qui naîtra aux Hébreux, jetez-le dans le fleuve; et laissez vivre toutes les filles.
