Ecclesiastes 9
1 I have surely giuen mine heart to all this, and to declare all this, that the iust, and the wise, and their workes are in the hand of God: and no man knoweth eyther loue or hatred of all that is before them.
Certainement j'ai appliqué mon cœur à tout ceci; et pour éclaircir tout ceci, [savoir] que les justes et les sages, et leurs faits sont en la main de Dieu; mais les hommes ne connaissent ni l'amour ni la haine de tout ce qui est devant eux.
2 All things come alike to all: and the same condition is to the iust and to the wicked, to the good and to the pure, and to the polluted, and to him that sacrificeth, and to him that sacrificeth not: as is the good, so is the sinner, he that sweareth, as he that feareth an othe.
Tout arrive également à tous; un même accident arrive au juste et au méchant; au bon, au net, et au souillé; à celui qui sacrifie, et à celui qui ne sacrifie point; le pécheur est comme l'homme de bien; celui qui jure, comme celui qui craint de jurer.
3 This is euill among all that is done vnder the sunne, that there is one condition to all, and also the heart of the sonnes of men is full of euill, and madnes is in their heartes whiles they liue, and after that, they goe to the dead.
C'est ici une chose fâcheuse entre toutes celles qui se font sous le soleil, qu'un même accident arrive à tous, et qu'aussi le cœur des hommes est plein de maux, et que des folies occupent leurs cœurs durant leur vie, et après cela ils vont vers les morts.
4 Surely whosoeuer is ioyned to all ye liuing, there is hope: for it is better to a liuing dog, then to a dead lyon.
Et qui est celui qui leur voudrait être associé? Il y a de l'espérance pour tous ceux qui sont encore vivants: et même un chien vivant vaut mieux qu'un lion mort.
5 For the liuing knowe that they shall dye, but the dead knowe nothing at all: neither haue they any more a rewarde: for their remembrance is forgotten.
Certainement les vivants savent qu'ils mourront, mais les morts ne savent rien, et ne gagnent plus rien; car leur mémoire est mise en oubli.
6 Also their loue, and their hatred, and their enuie is now perished, and they haue no more portion for euer, in all that is done vnder the sunne.
Aussi leur amour, leur haine, leur envie a déjà péri, et ils n'ont plus aucune part au monde dans tout ce qui se fait sous le soleil.
7 Goe, eate thy bread with ioy, and drinke thy wine with a cheerefull heart: for God nowe accepteth thy workes.
Va, mange ton pain avec joie, et bois gaiement ton vin; car Dieu a déjà tes œuvres pour agréables.
8 At all times let thy garments be white, and let not oyle be lacking vpon thine head.
Que tes vêtements soient blancs en tout temps, et que le parfum ne manque point sur ta tête.
9 Reioyce with the wife whom thou hast loued all the dayes of the life of thy vanitie, which God hath giuen thee vnder the sunne all the dayes of thy vanitie: for this is thy portion in the life, and in thy trauaile wherein thou labourest vnder the sunne.
Vis joyeusement tous les jours de la vie de ta vanité avec la femme que tu as aimée, et qui t'a été donnée sous le soleil pour tous les jours de ta vanité; car c'est là ta portion dans cette vie, et [ce qui te revient] de ton travail que tu fais sous le soleil.
10 All that thine hand shall finde to doe, doe it with all thy power: for there is neither worke nor inuention, nor knowledge, nor wisedome in the graue whither thou goest. (Sheol h7585)
Tout ce que tu auras moyen de faire, fais-le selon ton pouvoir; car au sépulcre, où tu vas, il n'y a ni occupation, ni discours, ni science, ni sagesse. (Sheol h7585)
11 I returned, and I sawe vnder the sunne that the race is not to the swift, nor the battell to the strong, nor yet bread to the wise, nor also riches to men of vnderstanding, neither yet fauour to men of knowledge: but time and chance commeth to them all.
Je me suis tourné [ailleurs], et j'ai vu sous le soleil que la course n'est point aux légers, ni aux forts la bataille, ni aux sages le pain, ni aux prudents les richesses, ni la grâce aux savants; mais que le temps et l'occasion décident de ce qui arrive à tous.
12 For neither doth man knowe his time, but as the fishes which are taken in an euill net, and as the birdes that are caught in the snare: so are the children of men snared in the euill time when it falleth vpon them suddenly.
Car aussi l'homme même ne connaît point son temps, non plus que les poissons qui sont pris au filet, [lequel est] mauvais [pour eux], et les oiseaux qui sont pris au lacet; [car] les hommes sont ainsi enlacés par le temps mauvais, lorsqu'il tombe subitement sur eux.
13 I haue also seene this wisedome vnder the sunne, and it is great vnto me.
J'ai vu aussi cette sagesse sous le soleil, laquelle m'a semblé grande;
14 A litle citie and fewe men in it, and a great King came against it, and compassed it about, and builded fortes against it.
C'est qu'il y avait une petite ville, et peu de gens dedans, contre laquelle est venu un grand Roi, qui l'a investie, et qui a bâti de grands forts contre elle;
15 And there was founde therein a poore and wise man, and he deliuered the citie by his wisedome: but none remembred this poore man.
Mais il s'est trouvé en elle un homme pauvre, [et] sage, qui l'a délivrée par sa sagesse; mais nul ne s'est souvenu de cet homme-là.
16 Then said I, Better is wisdome then strength: yet the wisedome of the poore is despised, and his wordes are not heard.
Alors j'ai dit: La sagesse vaut mieux que la force, et cependant la sagesse de ce pauvre a été méprisée, et on n'entend point parler de lui.
17 The wordes of the wise are more heard in quietnes, then the crye of him that ruleth among fooles.
Les paroles des sages doivent être écoutées plus paisiblement que le cri de celui qui domine entre les fous.
18 Better is wisedome then weapons of warre: but one sinner destroyeth much good.
Mieux vaut la sagesse que tous les instruments de guerre; et un seul homme pécheur détruit un grand bien.
