Deuteronomy 20
1 When thou shalt go forth to warre against thine enemies, and shalt see horses and charets, and people moe then thou, be not afrayde of them: for the Lord thy God is with thee, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt.
Lorsque tu te mettras en campagne contre tes ennemis, et que tu verras des chevaux et des chars, une armée plus nombreuse que toi, n'aie pas peur d'eux, car l'Éternel, ton Dieu, est avec toi, Lui qui t'a fait sortir du pays d'Egypte.
2 And when ye are come neere vnto the battel, then the Priest shall come forth to speake vnto the people,
Et quand vous serez près d'engager le combat, le Prêtre s'avancera et parlera au peuple
3 And shall say vnto them, Heare, O Israel: ye are come this day vnto battell against your enemies: let not your heartes faynt, neither feare, nor be amased, nor adread of them.
et il leur dira: Écoutez, Israélites! vous êtes aujourd'hui sur le point de livrer bataille à vos ennemis; que votre cœur ne faiblisse pas, n'ayez pas peur et ne tremblez pas, et ne prenez pas l'alarme devant eux.
4 For ye Lord your God goeth with you, to fight for you against your enemies, and to saue you
Car l'Éternel, votre Dieu, est Celui qui marche avec vous pour combattre pour vous contre vos ennemis, pour vous donner la victoire.
5 And let the officers speake vnto the people, saying, What man is there that hath buylt a new house, and hath not dedicate it? let him go and returne to his house, least he dye in the battel, and an other man dedicate it.
Ensuite les officiers parleront au peuple en ces termes: Lequel a bâti une maison neuve et n'en a pas encore fait la dédicace? qu'il s'en aille et regagne sa maison, de peur qu'il ne périsse dans la bataille et qu'un autre n'en fasse la dédicace.
6 And what man is there that hath planted a vineyarde, and hath not eaten of the fruite? let him go and returne againe vnto his house, least he die in the battel, and another eate the fruite.
Et lequel a planté une vigne et n'en a pas encore eu la première jouissance? qu'il s'en aille et regagne sa maison, de peur qu'il ne périsse dans la bataille et qu'un autre n'en ait la première jouissance.
7 And what man is there that hath betrothed a wife, and hath not taken her? let him go and returne againe vnto his house, lest he die in the battell, and another man take her.
Et lequel s'est fiancé à une femme, et ne l'a pas encore épousée? qu'il s'en aille et regagne sa maison, de peur qu'il ne périsse dans la bataille et qu'un autre ne l'épouse.
8 And let the officers speake further vnto the people, and say, Whosoeuer is afrayde and faynt hearted, let him go and returne vnto his house, least his brethrens heart faynt like his heart.
Et les officiers continueront à parler au peuple en ces termes: Lequel a peur et est intimidé? qu'il s'en aille et regagne sa maison, de peur que sa pusillanimité ne se communique à ses frères.
9 And after that the officers haue made an ende of speaking vnto the people, they shall make captaines of the armie to gouerne the people.
Et quand les officiers auront achevé de parler au peuple, ils mettront à la tête du peuple les chefs de corps d'armée.
10 When thou commest neere vnto a citie to fight against it, thou shalt offer it peace.
Quand tu arriveras devant une place pour lui donner l'assaut, somme-la de capituler.
11 And if it answere thee againe peaceably, and open vnto thee, then let all the people that is founde therein, be tributaries vnto thee, and serue thee.
Et si elle te répond en acceptant la capitulation, et s'ouvre devant toi, tout le peuple qui s'y trouvera, te deviendra corvéable, et te sera asservi.
12 But if it will make no peace with thee, but make war against thee, then shalt thou besiege it.
Mais si elle ne veut pas capituler avec toi, et qu'elle se mette en guerre contre toi et que tu l'assièges,
13 And the Lord thy God shall deliuer it into thine handes, and thou shalt smite all the males thereof with the edge of the sworde.
et que l'Éternel, ton Dieu, la livre entre tes mains, tu en passeras tous les mâles au fil de l'épée,
14 Onely the women, and the children, and the cattel, and all that is in the citie, euen all the spoyle thereof shalt thou take vnto thy selfe, and shalt eate the spoyle of thine enemies, which the Lord thy God hath giuen thee.
seulement tu feras ton butin des femmes et des enfants et des bestiaux et de tout ce qu'elle renfermera, et de toutes ses dépouilles, et vous jouirez de la dépouille de vos ennemis que vous livre l'Éternel, votre Dieu.
15 Thus shalt thou do vnto all ye cities, which are a great way off from thee, which are not of the cities of these nations here.
Ainsi traiterez-vous toutes les villes situées à une très grande distance de vous et ne faisant pas partie des villes de ces peuples d'ici.
16 But of the cities of this people, which the Lord thy God shall giue thee to inherite, thou shalt saue no person aliue,
Mais dans les villes de ces peuples-ci, que l'Éternel, ton Dieu, te donne en propriété, tu ne laisseras la vie à rien de ce qui respire;
17 But shalt vtterly destroy them: to wit, the Hittites, and the Amorites, the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, the Hiuites, and the Iebusites, as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee,
tu les dévoueras, au contraire: les Héthiens et les Amoréens, les Cananéens et les Perizzites, les Hévites et les Jébusites, conformément à l'ordre de l'Éternel, ton Dieu,
18 That they teache you not to doe after all their abominations, which they haue done vnto their gods, and so ye should sinne against the Lord your God.
afin qu'ils ne vous apprennent pas à imiter toutes leurs abominations qu'ils font pour leurs dieux, et que vous ne vous rendiez pas coupables envers l'Éternel, votre Dieu.
19 When thou hast besieged a citie long time, and made warre against it to take it, destroy not the trees therof, by smiting an axe into them: for thou mayest eate of them: therfore thou shalt not cut them downe to further thee in the siege, (for the tree of the field is mans life)
Quand tu auras tenu longtemps une ville bloquée pour l'assiéger, pour la prendre, tu ne détruiras pas les arbres, en y mettant la hache, car tu peux t'en nourrir, et tu ne dois pas les abattre, car les arbres des champs sont [trop utiles] à l'homme pour être aussi assiégés par toi.
20 Onely those trees, which thou knowest are not for meate, those shalt thou destroy and cut downe, and make fortes against the citie that maketh warre with thee, vntil thou subdue it.
Les arbres seuls dont tu sais qu'ils ne fournissent point d'aliments, tu pourras les endommager et les abattre, et en construire des ouvrages propres à faire le siège de la ville qui est en guerre avec toi, jusqu'à ce qu'elle succombe.
