2 Kings 3
1 Nowe Iehoram the sonne of Ahab beganne to reigne ouer Israel in Samaria, the eighteenth yeere of Iehoshaphat King of Iudah, and reigned twelue yeeres.
Joram, fils d’Achab, monta sur le trône d’Israël, à Samarie, la dix-huitième année du règne de Josaphat, roi de Juda; il régna douze ans.
2 And he wrought euill in the sight of the Lord, but not like his father nor like his mother: for he tooke away the image of Baal that his father had made.
Il fit ce qui déplaît aux yeux de l’Eternel, toutefois, moins que son père et que sa mère; c’est ainsi qu’il fit enlever la statue de Baal érigée par son père.
3 Neuerthelesse, he cleaued vnto the sinnes of Ieroboam, the sonne of Nebat, which made Israel to sinne, and departed not therefrom.
Mais il suivit, sans s’en écarter, les voies perverses de Jéroboam, fils de Nebat, qui avait induit Israël au péché.
4 Then Mesha King of Moab had store of sheepe, and rendred vnto the King of Israel an hundreth thousande lambes, and an hundreth thousande rammes with the wooll.
Mécha, roi de Moab, était riche en troupeaux: il payait au roi d’Israël un tribut de cent, mille agneaux et de cent mille béliers pourvus de leur laine.
5 But when Ahab was dead, the king of Moab rebelled against the King of Israel.
Mais à la mort d’Achab, le roi de Moab fit défection au roi d’Israël.
6 Therefore King Iehoram went out of Samaria the same season, and nombred all Israel,
Aussitôt, Joram quitta Samarie et passa en revue tout Israël.
7 And went, and sent to Iehoshaphat King of Iudah, saying, The King of Moab hath rebelled against me: wilt thou goe with me to battell against Moab? And he answered, I will goe vp: for I am, as thou art, my people, as thy people, and mine horses as thine horses.
Puis il se décida à envoyer le message suivant à Josaphat, roi de Juda: "Le roi de Moab s’est révolté contre moi. Veux-tu aller en guerre avec moi contre Moab?" Il répondit: "J’Irai; toi et moi, ton peuple et mon peuple, tes chevaux et les miens, c’est tout un.
8 Then said he, What way shall we goe vp? And he answered, The way of the wildernesse of Edom.
Quel chemin prendrons-nous? demanda Joram. La route du désert iduméen," répondit Josaphat.
9 So went the King of Israel and the king of Iudah, and the King of Edom, and when they had compassed the way seuen dayes, they had no water for the hoste, nor for the cattell that followed them.
Le roi d’Israël, le roi de Juda et le roi d’Edom entrèrent donc en campagne. Mais, après sept jours de marche, l’eau manqua aux troupes et aux bêtes qui les suivaient.
10 Therefore the King of Israel sayde, Alas, that the Lord hath called these three Kings, to giue them into the hand of Moab.
Le roi d’Israël s’écria: "Hélas! Est-ce que l’Eternel aurait fait appel à ces trois rois pour les livrer aux mains de Moab!"
11 But Iehoshaphat saide, Is there not here a Prophet of the Lord, that we may inquire of the Lord by him? And one of the King of Israels seruants answered, and said, Here is Elisha the sonne of Shaphat, which powred water on the handes of Eliiah.
Josaphat dit: "N’Y a-t-il point ici de prophète de Dieu auprès de qui nous puissions consulter le Seigneur?" Un des serviteurs du roi d’Israël répondit: "Il se trouve ici Elisée, fils de Chefat, qui a versé l’eau sur les mains d’Elie.
12 Then Iehoshaphat saide, The worde of the Lord is with him. Therefore the King of Israel, and Iehoshaphat, and the King of Edom went downe to him.
La parole divine est sur ses lèvres, dit Josaphat." Le roi d’Israël, Josaphat et le roi d’Edom se rendirent donc auprès de lui.
13 And Elisha sayde vnto the King of Israel, What haue I to doe with thee? get thee to the prophets of thy father and to the prophets of thy mother. And the King of Israel saide vnto him, Nay: for the Lord hath called these three Kings, to giue them into the hande of Moab.
Mais Elisée apostropha ainsi le roi d’Israël: "Qu’y a-t-il de commun entre toi et moi? Adresse-toi aux prophètes de ton père et aux prophètes de ta mère." Le roi d’Israël répondit: "Laissons cela. Est-ce que l’Eternel a fait appel à ces trois rois pour les livrer aux mains de Moab?"
14 Then Elisha said, As the Lord of hostes liueth, in whose sight I stande, if it were not, that I regarde the presence of Iehoshaphat the King of Iudah, I woulde not haue looked towarde thee, nor seene thee.
Elisée reprit: "Vive l’Eternel-Cebaot, que je sers! Si je ne respectais la personne de Josaphat, roi de Juda, je ne t’accorderais pas même un regard.
15 But nowe bring me a minstrel. And when the minstrel played, the hand of the Lord came vpon him.
Eh bien! Amenez-moi un musicien." Tandis que celui-ci jouait de son instrument, l’esprit du Seigneur s’empara du prophète,
16 And he saide, Thus saith the Lord, Make this valley full of ditches.
et il dit: "Ainsi a parlé l’Eternel: Creusez dans cette vallée fossés et fossés.
17 For thus saith the Lord, Ye shall neither see winde nor see raine, yet the valley shalbe filled with water, that ye may drinke, both ye and your cattel, and your beastes.
Car (telle est la parole de l’Eternel), vous ne sentirez pas de vent et vous ne verrez pas de pluie, et cependant cette vallée sera remplie d’eau, et vous aurez à boire, vous, vos troupeaux et vos bêtes.
18 But this is a small thing in the sight of the Lord: for he will giue Moab into your hande.
Mais c’est encore trop peu aux yeux de l’Eternel: il livrera aussi Moab en votre pouvoir.
19 And ye shall smite euery strong towne and euery chiefe citie, and shall fell euery faire tree, and shall stoppe all the fountaines of water, and marre euery good fielde with stones.
Vous détruirez toute ville forte, toute ville de marque; vous abattrez tout arbre fruitier, vous comblerez toute source d’eau, et toute bonne terre, vous la ruinerez en la couvrant de pierres."
20 And in the morning whe the meat offring was offred, beholde, there came water by the way of Edom: and the countrey was filled with water.
Le lendemain matin, à l’heure de l’oblation, l’eau arriva tout à coup du côté d’Edom, et le sol en fut inondé.
21 And when al the Moabites heard that the Kings were come vp to fight against them, they gathered all that was able to put on harnesse, and vpwarde, and stood in their border.
Tous les Moabites, ayant appris que les rois venaient porter la guerre chez eux, s’étaient rassemblés en armes, tous les hommes en âge de ceindre l’épée et au delà et s’étaient postés sur la frontière.
22 And they rose earely in the morning, when the sunne arose vpon the water, and the Moabites saw the water ouer against them, as red as blood.
S’Étant levés au matin, comme le soleil brillait au-dessus des eaux, celles-ci apparurent dé loin aux Moabites rouges comme du sang.
23 And they saide, This is blood the Kings are surely slaine, and one hath smitten another: now therefore, Moab, to the spoyle.
Ils s’écrièrent: "C’Est du sang! Assurément, les rois se sont pris de querelle, ils se sont entr’égorgés: au butin donc, Moab!"
24 And when they came to the host of Israel, the Israelites arose vp, and smote the Moabites, so that they fled before them, but they inuaded them, and smote Moab.
Ils se précipitèrent sur le camp des Israélites, mais ceux-ci se levèrent, battirent les Moabites, les mirent en fuite et en firent un grand carnage:
25 And they destroyed the cities: and on all the good field euery man cast his stone, and filled them and they stopt all the fountaines of water, and felled all the good trees: onely in Kirharaseth left they the stones thereof: howebeit they went about it with slings, and smote it.
Ils détruisirent les villes; chacun lança sa pierre sur les terres fertiles, qui en furent couvertes; ils comblèrent les sources et abattirent les arbres fruitiers. Il ne resta pierre sur pierre qu’à Kir-Haréset, qui fut assaillie, à son tour, de tous côtés par les frondeurs et ruinée.
26 And when the King of Moab saw that the battel was too sore for him, he tooke with him seuen hudreth men that drew the sword, to break through vnto the King of Edom: but they could not.
Le roi de Moab, se voyant trop faible pour lutter, se mit à la tête de sept cents hommes, l’épée nue, afin de se frayer un chemin jusqu’au roi d’Edom; mais ils n’y réussirent point.
27 Then he tooke his eldest sonne, that should haue reigned in his stead, and offered him for a burnt offring vpon the wall: so that Israel was sore grieued, and they departed from him, and returned to their countrey.
Alors il prit l’aîné de ses fils, l’héritier du trône, et l’immola en holocauste au haut des remparts. Aussitôt, une grande colère éclata contre Israël, qui dut se retirer et rentrer dans son pays.
