1 Chronicles 21
1 And Satan stoode vp against Israel, and prouoked Dauid to nomber Israel.
Satan, cherchant à nuire à Israël, incita David à en ordonner le dénombrement.
2 Therefore Dauid said to Ioab, and to the rulers of the people, Go, and nomber Israel from Beer-sheba euen to Dan, and bring it to me, that I may knowe the nomber of them.
David dit donc à Joab et aux chefs du peuple: "Allez recenser Israël depuis Bersabée jusqu’à Dan, et apportez-moi le relevé, pour que je sache quel chiffre il atteint."
3 And Ioab answered, The Lord increase his people an hundreth times so many as they be, O my lord the King: are they not all my lords seruats? wherefore doeth my lord require this thing? why should he be a cause of trespasse to Israel?
Joab répondit: "Ah! que l’Eternel multiplie son peuple au centuple de ce qu’il est! Tous, mon seigneur et roi, ne sont-ils pas tes serviteurs? Pourquoi mon maître demande-t-il pareille chose? Pourquoi charger Israël d’un tel péché?"
4 Neuerthelesse the Kings word preuailed against Ioab. And Ioab departed and went thorowe all Israel, and returned to Ierusalem.
Mais le roi maintint l’ordre donné à Joab. Celui-ci se mit en route, parcourut tout Israël, puis revint à Jérusalem.
5 And Ioab gaue the nomber and summe of the people vnto Dauid: and all Israel were eleuen hundreth thousande men that drewe sword: and Iudah was foure hundreth and seuentie thousande men that drewe sword.
Joab remit à David le résultat du dénombrement du peuple: tout Israël comptait onze cent mille hommes, pouvant tirer l’épée, et Juda comptait quatre cent soixante-dix mille hommes, pouvant tirer l’épée.
6 But the Leuites and Beniamin counted he not among them: for the Kings worde was abominable to Ioab.
Quant à Lévi et à Benjamin, il ne les avait pas compris dans le dénombrement, l’ordre du roi ayant été odieux à Joab.
7 And God was displeased with this thing: therefore he smote Israel.
Cette entreprise déplut aux yeux de Dieu, et il sévit contre Israël.
8 Then Dauid saide vnto God, I haue sinned greatly, because I haue done this thing: but now, I beseech thee, remooue the iniquitie of thy seruant: for I haue done very foolishly.
Alors David dit à Dieu: "J’Ai gravement péché par ma conduite. Et maintenant daigne pardonner le méfait de ton serviteur, car j’ai agi bien follement!"
9 And the Lord spake vnto Gad Dauids Seer, saying,
La parole de l’Eternel s’adressa en ces termes à Gad, le Voyant de David:
10 Goe and tell Dauid, saying, Thus saith the Lord, I offer thee three thinges: choose thee one of them, that I may doe it vnto thee.
"Va dire à David: Ainsi a parlé le Seigneur: Je te propose trois calamités; tu en choisiras une, que je t’infligerai."
11 So Gad came to Dauid, and sayde vnto him, Thus saith the Lord, Take to thee
Gad alla trouver David et lui dit: "Résigne-toi
12 Either three yeeres famine, or three moneths to be destroyed before thine aduersaries, and the sworde of thine enemies to take thee, or els the sworde of the Lord and pestilence in the lande three dayes, that the Angel of the Lord may destroy throughout all the coastes of Israel: nowe therefore aduise thee, what word I shall bring againe to him that sent me.
soit à trois années de famine, soit à trois mois de revers, infligés par tes adversaires, et de ravages causés par l’épée de tes ennemis, soit à trois jours de glaive brandi par l’Eternel, de peste dans le pays et de ruines opérées par l’Ange du Seigneur dans tout le territoire d’Israël. Décide immédiatement la réponse que je dois rendre à qui m’envoie!"
13 And Dauid said vnto Gad, I am in a wonderfull strait. let me nowe fall into the hande of the Lord: for his mercies are exceeding great, and let me not fall into the hande of man.
David répondit à Gad: "Mon anxiété est grande… mais j’aime mieux me livrer à la main de l’Eternel, car il est plein de miséricorde, plutôt que de tomber dans la main de l’homme."
14 So the Lord sent a pestilence in Israel, and there fell of Israel seuentie thousande men.
Le Seigneur fit alors sévir la peste en Israël, et il tomba en Israël soixante-dix mille hommes.
15 And God sent the Angel into Ierusalem to destroy it. And as he was destroying, the Lord behelde, and repented of the euill and sayde to the Angel that destroyed, It is nowe ynough, let thine hande cease. Then the Angel of the Lord stoode by the thresshing floore of Ornan the Iebusite.
Puis Dieu envoya un messager divin à Jérusalem pour la ravager, et, comme il se livrait à l’œuvre de destruction, le Seigneur vit et fut ému de cette calamité, et il dit à l’ange destructeur: "Assez! Retire maintenant ta main!" L’Ange du Seigneur se trouvait alors près de l’aire d’Ornan, le Jébuséen.
16 And Dauid lift vp his eyes, and sawe the Angel of the Lord stande betweene the earth and the heauen with his sworde drawen in his hand, and stretched out towarde Ierusalem. Then Dauid and the Elders of Israel, which were clothed in sacke, fell vpon their faces.
David leva les yeux et vit l’ange du Seigneur placé entre ciel et terre, tenant en main son épée dirigée contre Jérusalem. Aussitôt David et les anciens se jetèrent la face contre terre, revêtus de cilices.
17 And Dauid said vnto God, Is it not I that commanded to nomber the people? It is euen I that haue sinned and haue committed euil, but these sheepe what haue they done? O Lord my God, I beseech thee, let thine hande be on me and on my fathers house, and not on thy people for their destruction.
Et David dit à Dieu: "N’Est-ce pas moi qui ai donné l’ordre de dénombrer le peuple? C’Est moi qui ai péché, c’est moi qui suis grandement coupable, mais qu’ont fait ces brebis? Eternel, mon Dieu, de grâce, que ta main ne frappe que moi et ma famille, mais ne laisse pas le fléau s’abattre sur le peuple!"
18 Then the Angel of the Lord commanded Gad to say to Dauid, that Dauid should goe vp, and set vp an altar vnto the Lord in the thresshing floore of Ornan the Iebusite.
Un messager du Seigneur dit à Gad d’engager David à aller élever un autel de l’Eternel sur l’aire d’Ornan, le Jébuséen.
19 So Dauid went vp according to the saying of Gad, which he had spoken in the Name of the Lord.
David s’y rendit sur le conseil de Gad, qui avait parlé au nom de l’Eternel.
20 And Ornan turned about, and sawe the Angel, and his foure sonnes, that were with him, hid them selues, and Ornan thresshed wheat.
Comme Ornan se retournait, il aperçut l’ange; ses quatre fils qui étaient auprès de lui se cachèrent, tandis qu’Ornan était occupé à battre le blé.
21 And as Dauid came to Ornan, Ornan looked and sawe Dauid, and went out of the thresshing floore, and bowed himselfe to Dauid with his face to the grounde.
David s’avança vers Ornan; celui-ci, levant les yeux, le vit; il sortit aussitôt de l’aire et se prosterna devant David, la face contre terre.
22 And Dauid saide to Ornan, Giue me the place of thy thresshing floore, that I may builde an altar therein vnto the Lord: giue it me for sufficient money, that the plague may be stayed from the people.
David dit à Ornan: "Cède-moi l’emplacement de ton aire pour que j’y bâtisse un autel au Seigneur; cède-le moi pour argent comptant, et puisse la mortalité qui décime le peuple s’arrêter!"
23 Then Ornan saide vnto Dauid, Take it to thee, and let my lord the King do that which seemeth him good: loe, I giue thee bullockes for burnt offrings, and thresshing instruments for wood, and wheat for meate offring, I giue it all.
Ornan répondit à David: "Accepte-le plutôt, et que le roi mon maître fasse ce qui peut lui être agréable! Vois, je mets à ta disposition les bœufs pour en faire des holocaustes, les traîneaux pour servir de bois et le froment pour l’oblation: j’offre tout."
24 And King Dauid saide to Ornan, Not so: but I will bye it for sufficient money: for I wil not take that which is thine for the Lord, nor offer burnt offrings without cost.
"Non, répondit le roi David à Ornan, je prétends tout acheter pour argent comptant, car je ne veux rien accepter de ce qui est à toi pour honorer l’Eternel ni lui offrir un holocauste sans bourse délier."
25 So Dauid gaue to Ornan for that place sixe hundreth shekels of golde by weight.
David donna donc à Ornan pour l’emplacement des sicles d’or, au nombre de six cents.
26 And Dauid built there an altar vnto the Lord, and offred burnt offrings, and peace offrings, and called vpon the Lord, and he answered him by fire from heauen vpon the altar of burnt offring.
Il érigea là un autel au Seigneur, y offrit des holocaustes et des rémunératoires; il invoqua l’Eternel, qui l’exauça, en faisant descendre le feu du ciel sur l’autel de l’holocauste.
27 And when the Lord had spoken to the Angel, he put vp his sworde againe into his sheath.
Le Seigneur ordonna à l’ange de remettre son épée au fourreau.
28 At that time when Dauid sawe that the Lord had heard him in the thresshing floore of Ornan the Iebusite, then he sacrificed there.
Alors David, voyant que l’Eternel l’avait exaucé dans l’aire d’Ornan, le Jébuséen, se mit à y faire des sacrifices.
29 (But the Tabernacle of the Lord which Moses had made in the wildernesse, and the altar of burnt offring were at that season in the hie place at Gibeon.
Or, le tabernacle que Moïse avait construit dans le désert et l’autel des holocaustes se trouvaient à cette époque sur la hauteur de Gabaon.
30 And Dauid could not go before it to aske counsel at God: for he was afraide of the sworde of the Angel of the Lord.)
Et David n’osait s’y présenter pour aller consulter Dieu, car il était effrayé par le glaive de l’ange du Seigneur.
