1 Samuel 31
1 Now the Philistines fought against Israel, and the men of Israel fled before them, and many fell slain on Mount Gilboa.
Und die Philister stritten gegen Israel, und die Männer Israels flohen vor den Philistern und fielen erschlagen auf dem Gebirge Gilboa.
2 The Philistines followed hard after Saul and his sons, and they killed Saul’s sons Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchishua.
Und die Philister hängten sich an Saul und seine Söhne, und die Philister schlugen Jonathan und Abinadab und Malkischua, die Söhne Sauls.
3 When the battle intensified against Saul, the archers overtook him and wounded him critically.
Und der Streit war schwer für Saul; und es trafen ihn die Schützen, die Männer mit dem Bogen, und er war sehr verwundet von den Schützen.
4 Then Saul said to his armor-bearer, “Draw your sword and run it through me, or these uncircumcised men will come and run me through and torture me!” But his armor-bearer was terrified and refused to do it. So Saul took his own sword and fell on it.
Und Saul sprach zu seinem Waffenträger: Ziehe dein Schwert und durchstich mich damit, daß diese Unbeschnittenen nicht kommen und mich durchstechen und mißhandeln. Aber sein Waffenträger war nicht willens; denn er fürchtete sich sehr. Und Saul nahm das Schwert und fiel darauf.
5 When his armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he too fell on his own sword and died with him.
Und sein Waffenträger sah, daß Saul tot war, und auch er fiel auf sein Schwert und starb mit ihm.
6 So Saul, his three sons, his armor-bearer, and all his men died together that same day.
Und es starb Saul und seine drei Söhne und sein Waffenträger, auch alle seine Männer an selbigem Tage allzumal.
7 When the Israelites along the valley and those on the other side of the Jordan saw that the army of Israel had fled and that Saul and his sons had died, they abandoned their cities and ran away. So the Philistines came and occupied their cities.
Und die Männer Israels, die diesseits des Talgrundes und diesseits des Jordan waren, sahen, daß die Männer Israels geflohen und Saul und seine Söhne tot waren, und sie verlie-ßen die Städte und flohen, und die Philister kamen und wohnten darin.
8 The next day, when the Philistines came to strip the dead, they found Saul and his three sons fallen on Mount Gilboa.
Und es geschah am morgenden Tag, da kamen die Philister, um die Erschlagenen auszuziehen, und fanden Saul und seine drei Söhne auf dem Gebirge Gilboa gefallen,
9 They cut off Saul’s head, stripped off his armor, and sent messengers throughout the land of the Philistines to proclaim the news in the temples of their idols and among their people.
Und schnitten ihm den Kopf ab, und zogen ihm seine Waffen aus und sandten sie im Lande der Philister umher, es in dem Hause ihrer Götzen und dem Volke zu verkünden.
10 They put his armor in the temple of the Ashtoreths and hung his body on the wall of Beth-shan.
Und seine Waffen legten sie in das Haus der Aschtaroth und seinen Leib schlugen sie an an die Mauer von Beth-Schan.
11 When the people of Jabesh-gilead heard what the Philistines had done to Saul,
Und die Bewohner von Jabesch in Gilead hörten davon, was die Philister dem Saul getan,
12 all their men of valor set out, journeyed all night, and retrieved the bodies of Saul and his sons from the wall of Beth-shan. When they arrived at Jabesh, they burned the bodies there.
Und es machten sich alle tapferen Männer auf und gingen die ganze Nacht hindurch und nahmen den Leib Sauls und die Leiber seiner Söhne von der Mauer von Beth- Schan und brachten sie nach Jabesch und verbrannten sie daselbst.
13 Then they took their bones and buried them under the tamarisk tree in Jabesh, and they fasted seven days.
Und ihre Gebeine nahmen sie und begruben sie unter dem Hainbaum in Jabesch und fasteten sieben Tage.
