Judges 3
1 Now these are the nations which Jehovah left, to prove Israel by them, even as many [of Israel] as had not known all the wars of Canaan;
Das sind aber die Völker, die Jahwe da ließ, um durch sie Israel auf die Probe zu stellen, alle diejenigen, welche alle die Kämpfe um Kanaan nicht kannten, -
2 only that the generations of the children of Israel might know, to teach them war, at the least such as beforetime knew nothing thereof:
nur um der Geschlechter der Israeliten willen, um sie die Kriegführung zu lehren, nur die, welche von den früheren Kämpfen nichts wußten:
3 [namely], the five lords of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites, and the Sidonians, and the Hivites that dwelt in mount Lebanon, from mount Baal-hermon unto the entrance of Hamath.
die fünf Fürsten der Philister, alle Kanaaniter, die Sidonier und die Heviter, die auf dem Gebirge Libanon vom Berge Baal Hermon bis da, wo es nach Hamath hineingeht, wohnen.
4 And they were [left], to prove Israel by them, to know whether they would hearken unto the commandments of Jehovah, which he commanded their fathers by Moses.
Sie dienten dazu, um Israel auf die Probe zu stellen, um zu erfahren, ob sie den Geboten Jahwes gehorchen würden, die er ihren Vätern durch Mose gegeben hatte.
5 And the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites:
So wohnten die Israeliten inmitten der Kanaaniter, Hethiter, Amoriter, Pheresiter, Heviter und Jebusiter,
6 and they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their own daughters to their sons and served their gods.
nahmen sich ihre Töchter zu Frauen und verheirateten ihre Töchter an die Söhne jener und dienten ihren Göttern.
7 And the children of Israel did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah, and forgat Jehovah their God, and served the Baalim and the Asheroth.
Und die Israeliten thaten, was Jahwe mißfiel, und vergaßen Jahwe, ihren Gott, und verehrten die Baale und die Ascheren.
8 Therefore the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Cushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia: and the children of Israel served Cushan-rishathaim eight years.
Da entbrannte der Zorn Jahwes über Israel, so daß er sie in die Gewalt Kusan Risathaims, des Königs von Aram Naharim, verkaufte; und die Israeliten waren Kusan Risathaim acht Jahre unterthan.
9 And when the children of Israel cried unto Jehovah, Jehovah raised up a saviour to the children of Israel, who saved them, even Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother.
Darauf schrieen die Israeliten zu Jahwe um Hilfe, und Jahwe ließ den Israeliten einen Retter erstehen, der errettete sie: Othniel, den Sohn des Kenas, den jüngeren Bruder Kalebs.
10 And the Spirit of Jehovah came upon him, and he judged Israel; and he went out to war, and Jehovah delivered Cushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand: and his hand prevailed against Cushan-rishathaim.
Und der Geist Jahwes kam über ihn, so daß er Israel zu seinem Rechte verhalf. Und als er in den Kampf zog, gab ihm Jahwe Kusan Risathaim, den König von Aram, in seine Gewalt, und er gewann über Kusan Risathaim die Oberhand.
11 And the land had rest forty years. And Othniel the son of Kenaz died.
Und das Land genoß vierzig Jahre lang Ruhe. Und Othniel, der Sohn des Kenas, starb.
12 And the children of Israel again did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah: and Jehovah strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah.
Aber die Israeliten thaten aufs neue, was Jahwe mißfiel. Da gab Jahwe Eglon, dem Könige von Moab, Macht über Israel, weil sie thaten, was Jahwe mißfiel.
13 And he gathered unto him the children of Ammon and Amalek; and he went and smote Israel, and they possessed the city of palm-trees.
Der versammelte zu sich die Ammoniter und Amalekiter und zog hin, schlug Israel und besetzte die Palmenstadt.
14 And the children of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years.
Die Israeliten waren Eglon, dem Könige von Moab, achtzehn Jahre unterthan.
15 But when the children of Israel cried unto Jehovah, Jehovah raised them up a saviour, Ehud the son of Gera, the Benjamite, a man left-handed. And the children of Israel sent tribute by him unto Eglon the king of Moab.
Da schrieen die Israeliten zu Jahwe, und Jahwe ließ ihnen einen Retter erstehen, Ehud, den Sohn des Benjaminiten Gera, einen linkshändigen Mann. Durch ihn sandten nämlich die Israeliten Tribut an Eglon, den König von Moab.
16 And Ehud made him a sword which had two edges, a cubit in length; and he girded it under his raiment upon his right thigh.
Da fertigte sich Ehud ein Schwert, das hatte zwei Schneiden und war eine Spanne lang; das gürtete sich Ehud unter seinem Gewand an seine rechte Seite.
17 And he offered the tribute unto Eglon king of Moab: now Eglon was a very fat man.
So brachte er Eglon, dem Könige von Moab, den Tribut. Eglon war aber ein sehr feister Mann.
18 And when he had made an end of offering the tribute, he sent away the people that bare the tribute.
Als er nun die Überreichung des Tributs vollzogen hatte, geleitete er die Leute, welche den Tribut getragen hatten;
19 But he himself turned back from the quarries that were by Gilgal, and said, I have a secret errand unto thee, O king. And he said, Keep silence. And all that stood by him went out from him.
er selbst aber kehrte bei den Schnitzbildern am Gilgal wieder um und ließ Eglon sagen: Ich habe ein vertrauliches Wort an dich, o König! Da gebot er: Bst! darauf traten alle, die ihn umstanden, ab.
20 And Ehud came unto him; and he was sitting by himself alone in the cool upper room. And Ehud said, I have a message from God unto thee. And he arose out of his seat.
Als nun Ehud zu ihm eingetreten war, während er allein in seinem kühlen Obergemache saß, sprach Ehud: Ich habe einen Gottesspruch an dich! Da erhob er sich von seinem Sitze.
21 And Ehud put forth his left hand, and took the sword from his right thigh, and thrust it into his body:
Da griff Ehud mit seiner linken Hand zu, nahm das Schwert von seiner rechten Seite und stieß es ihm in den Leib,
22 and the haft also went in after the blade; and the fat closed upon the blade, for he drew not the sword out of his body; and it came out behind.
so daß nach der Klinge auch das Heft noch eindrang, und das Fett die Klinge umschloß, denn er hatte das Schwert nicht wieder aus seinem Leibe herausgezogen. Dann ging er nach dem Dache hinaus.
23 Then Ehud went forth into the porch, and shut the doors of the upper room upon him, and locked them.
Dann ging Ehud nach der Halle hinaus, schloß die Thüren des Obergemachs hinter sich und verriegelte sie.
24 Now when he was gone out, his servants came; and they saw, and, behold, the doors of the upper room were locked; and they said, Surely he is covering his feet in the upper chamber.
Als er aber eben hinausgegangen war, kamen seine Höflinge; als diese bemerkten, daß die Thüren des Obergemachs verriegelt waren, dachten sie: Er wird wohl nur in der kühlen Kammer seine Notdurft verrichten.
25 And they tarried till they were ashamed; and, behold, he opened not the doors of the upper room: therefore they took the key, and opened [them]; and, behold, their lord was fallen down dead on the earth.
So warteten sie endlos. Als er aber die Thüren des Obergemachs immer noch nicht öffnete, nahmen sie den Schlüssel und schlossen auf; da fanden sie ihren Herrn tot am Boden liegend.
26 And Ehud escaped while they tarried, and passed beyond the quarries, and escaped unto Seirah.
Während sie aber gezögert hatten, war Ehud entronnen; er war unterdes bis an die Schnitzbilder hinaus gelangt und entkam so nach Seira.
27 And it came to pass, when he was come, that he blew a trumpet in the hill-country of Ephraim; and the children of Israel went down with him from the hill-country, and he before them.
Als er aber heimkam, stieß er auf dem Gebirge Ephraim in die Posaune. Da stiegen die Israeliten mit ihm herab vom Gebirge und er an ihrer Spitze.
28 And he said unto them, Follow after me; for Jehovah hath delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand. And they went down after him, and took the fords of the Jordan against the Moabites, and suffered not a man to pass over.
Und er gebot ihnen: Steigt mir nach hinab, denn Jahwe hat eure Feinde, die Moabiter, in eure Gewalt gegeben. Da stiegen sie ihm nach herab, besetzten die Jordanfurten nach Moab zu und ließen niemand übersetzen.
29 And they smote of Moab at that time about ten thousand men, every lusty man, and every man of valor; and there escaped not a man.
Und sie besiegten zu jener Zeit die Moabiter, etwa 10000 Mann, lauter starke und streitbare Leute, so daß niemand entrann.
30 So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. And the land had rest fourscore years.
So mußten sich die Moabiter damals unter die Gewalt Israels beugen. Und das Land hatte achtzig Jahre lang Ruhe. Ehud aber richtete sie, bis er starb.
31 And after him was Shamgar the son of Anath, who smote of the Philistines six hundred men with an ox-goad: and he also saved Israel.
Und nach ihm trat Samgar, der Sohn Anaths, auf; der schlug die Philister, 600 Mann, mit einem Ochsenstecken, und auch er errettete Israel.
