Ezechiël 24
1 Wijders geschiedde des HEEREN woord tot mij, in het negende jaar, in de tiende maand, op den tienden der maand, zeggende:
Almost nine [after we had been taken to Babylonia], on the tenth day of the tenth month [of that year], Yahweh gave me this message:
2 Mensenkind! schrijf u den naam van den dag op, even van dezen zelfden dag; de koning van Babel legt zich voor Jeruzalem, even op dezen zelfden dag.
“You human, write down what day of the month this is. On this [the army of] King of Babylon has surrounded Jerusalem.
3 En gebruik een gelijkenis tot dat wederspannig huis, en zeg tot hen: Alzo zegt de Heere HEERE: Zet een pot toe, zet hem toe, en giet ook water daarin.
Tell those rebellious Israeli people [MTY] [in Babylon] a parable. Say this to them: This is what Yahweh the Lord says: ‘Pour water into the [cooking] pot and put the pot [the fire].
4 Doe zijn stukken te zamen daarin, alle goede stukken, de dij en den schouder, vul hem met de keur der beenderen.
Put into the pot some pieces of [from one of your best sheep]: Put in the leg and shoulder, [which are] the best pieces. [Then] fill [the rest of] the pot with the best bones.
5 Neem de keur van de kudde, en stook ook een brandstapel van de beenderen daaronder; doe hem wel opzieden; ook zullen zijn beenderen daarin gekookt worden.
Pile wood on the fire, and cook the bones and the meat in the boiling water.’
6 Daarom, alzo zegt de Heere HEERE: Wee der bloedstad, den pot, welks schuim in hem is, en van welken zijn schuim en niet is uitgegaan! trek stuk bij stuk daaruit, en laat het lot over hem niet vallen.
[Do that] because this is what Yahweh the Lord says: ‘Terrible things will happen [Jerusalem]; it is city that is full of murderers [MTY], [a city that is like] [MET] a scorched pot whose black residue inside cannot be removed. Take the pieces [of meat] out of the pot, but do not choose which pieces to take out.
7 Want haar bloed is in het midden van haar; op een gladde steenrots heeft zij dat gelegd; zij heeft het op de aarde niet uitgestort, om hetzelve met stof te bedekken.
The blood of the people who were murdered in Jerusalem is still there; they were murdered on the bare rocks, not on the soil, where their blood could be covered.
8 Opdat Ik de grimmigheid doe opgaan om wraak te oefenen, heb Ik ook haar bloed op een gladde steenrots gelegd, opdat het niet bedekt worde.
But I am the one who caused the blood of those who were murdered [MTY] to be smeared on the bare rock, where their blood could not be covered; I did that in order [I could see it and] then be angry and get revenge.’
9 Daarom, alzo zegt de Heere HEERE: Wee der bloedstad! Ik zal ook den brandstapel groot maken!
Therefore, this is what [I], Yahweh the Lord say: ‘Terrible things will happen to that city that is full of murderers [MTY]! [It will be as though] I also will pile high [the wood in the fire].
10 Draag veel houts toe, steek het vuur aan, verteer het vlees, en kruid het met specerijen, en laat de beenderen verbranden.
[So], heap on the wood and light the fire! Cook the meat well, and mix some spices with it; cook it until the bones are charred.
11 Stel hem daarna ledig op zijn kolen, opdat hij heet worde, en zijn roest verbrande, en zijn onreinigheid in het midden van hem versmelte, zijn schuim verteerd worde.
Then set the empty pot on the [of the fire] until the pot becomes [very] hot and the copper glows, with the result that the impurities and the rust will be burned up.
12 Met ijdelheden heeft zij Mij moede gemaakt; nog is haar overvloedig schuim van haar niet uitgegaan; haar schuim moet in het vuur.
[It is as though] I tried to get rid of that rust, but I was not able to do it, [not even] by putting that pot in a fire.
13 In uw onreinigheid is schandelijkheid, omdat Ik u gereinigd heb, en gij niet gereinigd zijt, zo zult gij van uw onreinigheid niet meer gereinigd worden, totdat Ik Mijn grimmigheid op u zal hebben doen rusten.
The [in the pot represents] your immoral behavior. I tried to cleanse you from your wicked behavior, but you did not allow me to do that. So you will not be [from the guilt of your sin] [I have punished you and] I am no longer angry.
14 Ik, de HEERE, heb het gesproken; het zal komen, en Ik zal het doen; Ik zal er niet van wijken, en Ik zal niet verschonen noch berouw hebben; naar uw wegen en naar uw handelingen zullen zij u richten, spreekt de Heere HEERE.
I, Yahweh, have said [that I will surely punish you]. [And it is time] for me to do that. I will not change my mind; I will not refrain from punishing you, and I will not pity you. I will judge you [and punish you] as you deserve to be punished for your sinful behavior. [That will surely happen because] I, Yahweh the Lord, have said it.”’”
15 Wijders geschiedde des HEEREN woord tot mij, zeggende:
[One day] Yahweh gave me this message:
16 Mensenkind! zie, Ik zal den lust uwer ogen van u wegnemen door een plage; nochtans zult gij niet rouwklagen, noch wenen, en uw tranen zullen niet voortkomen.
“You human, I am going to suddenly take from [your wife], whom you love very much. [when she dies], do [show that you are] sad or lament or cry.
17 Houd stil van kermen, gij zult geen dodenrouw maken, bind uw hoed op u, en doe uw schoenen aan uw voeten; en de bovenste lip zult gij niet bewinden, en zult der lieden brood niet eten.
Groan quietly; do not cry [openly] for her. [Keep] your turban wrapped around your head, [instead of being barefoot, keep] your sandals on your feet. Do not cover the lower part of your [to show that you are sad]. And do not eat the kind of food that people who are mourning usually eat.”
18 Dit sprak ik tot het volk in den morgenstond, en mijn huisvrouw stierf in den avond; en ik deed in den morgenstond, gelijk mij geboden was.
[one morning] I talked to the [as usual], and that evening my wife [suddenly] died. The next morning I did what [Yahweh] had told me to do.
19 En het volk zeide tot mij: Zult gij ons niet te kennen geven, wat ons deze dingen zijn, dat gij aldus doet?
Then the people asked me, “What do the things that you are doing signify to us?”
20 En ik zeide tot hen: Het woord des HEEREN is tot mij geschied, zeggende:
So I said to them, “[This is what] Yahweh told me:
21 Zeg tot het huis Israels: Alzo zegt de Heere HEERE: Ziet, Ik zal Mijn heiligdom ontheiligen, de heerlijkheid uwer sterkte, de begeerte uwer ogen, en de verschoning uwer ziel; en uw zonen en uw dochteren, die gij verlaten hebt, zullen door het zwaard vallen.
‘Tell the Israeli people [MTY] that I am about to destroy the temple, [the building] that you are very proud of, the building that you delight to look at. Your children whom you [in Jerusalem when you were forced to come to Babylon] will be killed [their enemies’] swords.
22 Dan zult gijlieden doen, gelijk als ik gedaan heb; de bovenste lip zult gij niet bewinden, en der lieden brood zult gij niet eten.
[When that happens], you will do like I have done: You will not cover the lower part of your faces, or eat the kinds of food that people who are mourning usually eat.
23 En uw hoeden zullen op uw hoofden zijn, en uw schoenen aan uw voeten; gij zult niet rouwklagen, noch wenen, maar gij zult in uw ongerechtigheden versmachten, en een iegelijk tegen zijn broeder zuchten.
[You will keep] your turbans wrapped around your heads and [keep] your sandals on your feet. You will not mourn or cry, but your bodies will become very thin and slowly die because of your sins. And you will groan to each other.
24 Alzo zal ulieden Ezechiel tot een wonderteken zijn; naar alles, wat hij gedaan heeft, zult gij doen; als dit komt, dan zult gij weten, dat Ik de Heere HEERE ben.
Ezekiel will be a warning to you, and you must do what he has done. When that happens, you will know that I, Yahweh the [have the power to do what I say that I will do].’”
25 En gij, mensenkind! zal het niet zijn, ten dage, als Ik van hen zal wegnemen hun sterkte, de vreugde huns sieraads, den lust hunner ogen en het verlangen hunner zielen, hun zonen en hun dochteren;
[Then Yahweh said to me], “You human, [soon] I will destroy their sacred temple, which they rejoice about and which they respect and delight to look at, and [I will get rid of] their sons and daughters also.
26 Dat tenzelfden dage een ontkomene tot u zal komen, om uw oren dat te doen horen?
On that day, someone will escape [from Jerusalem] and come and tell you what has happened [there].
27 Ten zelven dage zal uw mond bij dien, die ontkomen is, opengedaan worden, en gij zult spreken, en niet meer stom zijn; alzo zult gij hun tot een wonderteken zijn, en zij zullen weten, dat Ik de HEERE ben.
When that happens, you will be able to speak again [MTY] [without constraint]. You two will talk together [DOU]. You will be a warning to the people; and they will know that I, Yahweh the Lord, [have the power to do what I say that I will do].”
