< 1 Samuel 16 >

Bangkongtetpawiteh, a capanaw thung dawk siangpahrang lah tami buet touh ka pouk tangcoung e ao telah atipouh.
And Yahweh said unto Samuel—How long, art thou going to pine for Saul, seeing that, I, have rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill thy horn with oil, and come! let me send thee unto Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided me, among his sons, a king.
And Samuel said, How can I go? As soon as Saul heareth, he will slay me. Then said Yahweh, A heifer, take thou with thee, and say, To sacrifice unto Yahweh, am I come.
Then shall thou bid Jesse to the sacrifice, —when, I, will let thee know what thou must do, so shalt thou anoint for me him whom I shall name unto thee.
4 Samuel ni, BAWIPA e kâ poe e patetlah a sak teh Bethlehem vah a cei, a thonae ni kho thung e kacuenaw a tâlueng sak. Roumnae hoi na tho maw telah atipouh awh.
And Samuel did that which Yahweh had spoken, and went to Bethlehem. And the elders of the city came trembling to meet him, and one said—Peaceably, comest thou?
5 Samuel ni roumnae hoi doeh. BAWIPA koe thuengnae ka sak hanelah ka tho. Kamthoung awh nateh thuengnae koe tho van awh atipouh. Jeese hoi a capanaw a kamthoung sak awh hnukkhu ahnimanaw hah thuengnae koe a coun.
And he said—Peaceably: to sacrifice unto Yahweh, am I come. Hallow yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice. And he hallowed Jesse and his sons, and bade them to the sacrifice.
And it came to pass, when they entered, that he looked upon Eliab, —and said to himself, Surely, before Yahweh, is his Anointed.
7 BAWIPA ni a meilam a tungtang khen hanh, Kai ni ahni teh ka pahnawt toe. Kai teh tami ni a khet e patetlah ka khen hoeh. Tami ni teh avanlah doeh a khet. BAWIPA teh a lungthin ka khen e doeh telah ati.
But Yahweh said unto Samuel—Do not regard his countenance, or the height of his stature, for I have rejected him, —for it is not what man looketh to but what God looketh to. For, man, looketh to the outward appearance, but, Yahweh, looketh to the heart.
8 Jesi ni Abinadab a kaw teh Samuel hmalah a ceisak. Ahni ni het hai BAWIPA ni a rawi e nahoeh telah ati.
Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel, —and he said, Neither of this one, hath Yahweh made choice.
9 Jesi ni Samah bout a ceisak ahni hai BAWIPA ni a rawi e nahoeh telah ati.
Then Jesse made Shammah pass by, —and he said—Nor of this one, hath Yahweh made choice.
10 Jesi ni a capa 7 touh Samuel hmalah a ceisak. Samuel ni Jesi koevah BAWIPA ni hetnaw rawi hoeh telah ati.
So Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel, —and Samuel said unto Jesse, Yahweh hath not made choice of these.
11 Samuel ni Jesi koe hi vah na canaw koung a kuep maw, atipouh. Ahni na cahnoung ao rah, hatei tu a khoum telah bout a dei pouh navah, tami patoun nateh kaw sak haw, hi a tho hoehroukrak tahung awh mahoeh telah Samuel ni atipouh.
Then said Samuel unto Jesse—Are these all the young men? And he said—There yet remaineth, the youngest, but lo! he is tending the sheep. Then said Samuel unto Jesse—Do, send, and summon him, for we cannot sit round, until he cometh in hither.
12 Hatdawkvah tami a patoun teh a kaw teh a kâenkhai, ahni teh a sam palingvuek, a mit padai e hai a kamcu teh a mei hai ahawi. BAWIPA ni het nan mah thaw nateh ahni hah satui awi haw atipouh.
So he sent, and brought him in. Now, he, was ruddy, a stripling with handsome eyes, and noble mien. Then said Yahweh—Rise—anoint him, for, this, is, he.
13 Hottelahoi Samuel ni ki dawk hoi satui a la teh a hmaunaw rahak ahni teh satui a awi. Hat na hnin totouh hoi teh BAWIPA e Muitha teh Devit van a pha. Samuel a thaw teh Ramah kho lah a cei.
And Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren. And the Spirit of Yahweh came mightily upon David, from that day forward. Then arose Samuel, and went his way unto Ramah.
14 BAWIPA e Muitha teh Sawl dawk hoi a kampuen teh BAWIPA koehoi e muitha kathout ni a lungpuen sak.
But, the spirit of Yahweh, departed from Saul, —and there terrified him a sad spirit, from Yahweh.
15 Sawl e a sannaw ni ahni koevah, khenhaw! BAWIPA koehoi e muitha kathout ni runae a poe e doeh.
Then said the servants of Saul unto him, —Lo! we pray thee, a sad superhuman spirit, doth terrify thee:
16 Nang koe kaawm awh e na sannaw hah ratoung ka kueng thai e tawng hanelah atu kâ na poe awh haw. Cathut koe e Muitha mathout a tho toteh, ahni ni a kut hoi ratoung a kueng vaiteh na hawi han doeh telah atipouh awh.
Pray let our lord bid thy servants before thee, seek out a man, skilled in playing on the lyre, —so shall it be, when a sad superhuman spirit cometh on thee, then shall he play with his hand, and thou shalt be joyful.
And Saul said unto his servants, —I pray you, look out for me a man that excelleth in playing, and bring him in unto me.
18 A sannaw thung dawk e buet touh ni khenhaw! Bethlehem kho e Jesi capa ratoung kueng kathoum poung e a thakaawme, taran ka tuk thai e, lawkdei kathoum e, a mei ka hawi poung e, ka hmu toe. Ahni koe BAWIPA ao atipouh.
Then responded one of the young men and said—Lo! I have seen—a son of Jesse, the Bethlehemite, skilled in playing, and a mighty man of valour, and a man of war, and of intelligent speech, and a handsome man, and, Yahweh, is with him.
19 Sawl ni Jesi koe patounenaw a patoun teh tu ka khoum e capa hah kai koe patoun haw telah atipouh.
So Saul sent messengers unto Jesse, —and said, Send, unto me—David thy son, who is with the sheep.
20 Jesi ni la buet touh a la teh ca hane naw, vaiyei hoi misurtui um touh hoi hmaeca hoi a capa Devit hah Sawl koe a patoun.
Then took Jesse an ass laden with bread, and a skin of wine, and one kid, —and sent by the hand of David his son, unto Saul.
21 Devit ni Sawl koe a pha toteh a hmalah a kangdue, ahni ni a lung hroung a pataw teh senehmaica kasinkung lah a hruek.
And David came in unto Saul, —and stood before him, —and he loved him greatly, and he became his armour-bearer.
Bangkongtetpawiteh, ka lungyouk telah dei pouh hane tami a patoun.
And Saul sent unto Jesse, saying, —I pray thee, let David stand before me, for he hath found favour in mine eyes.
23 Cathut koehoi muitha mathout teh Sawl koe a phanae tueng dawk Devit ni ratoung a la teh a kueng. Sawl teh bout a thangcuem teh, bout a dam. Muitha mathout ni hai a kangheng takhai.
And so it used to be, when a superhuman spirit came unto Saul, then would David take the lyre, and play with his hand, —and Saul would be refreshed, and be joyful, and, the sad spirit, would depart from him.
