প্রথম রাজাবলি 18
1 বেশ কিছু সময় পার হয়ে যাওয়ার পর, তৃতীয় বছরে সদাপ্রভুর এই বাক্য এলিয়ের কাছে এসেছিল: “যাও, নিজেকে আহাবের সামনে উপস্থিত করো, আর আমি দেশে বৃষ্টি পাঠাব।”
After many days, the LORD’s word came to Elijah, in the third year, saying, “Go, show yourself to Ahab; and I will send rain on the earth.”
2 অতএব এলিয় নিজেকে আহাবের সামনে উপস্থিত করতে গেলেন। ইত্যবসরে শমরিয়ায় দুর্ভিক্ষ চরম আকার ধারণ করল,
Elijah went to show himself to Ahab. The famine was severe in Samaria.
3 এবং আহাব তাঁর প্রাসাদের প্রশাসক ওবদিয়কে ডেকে পাঠালেন। (ওবদিয় সদাপ্রভুর প্রতি নিবেদিতপ্রাণ এক বিশ্বাসী ছিলেন।
Ahab called Obadiah, who was over the household. (Now Obadiah feared the LORD greatly;
4 ঈষেবল যখন সদাপ্রভুর ভাববাদীদের মেরে ফেলছিল, ওবদিয় তখন একশো জন ভাববাদীকে নিয়ে গিয়ে দুটি গুহায়—এক একটিতে পঞ্চাশ জন করে—লুকিয়ে রেখেছিলেন, এবং তাদের জন্য খাবার ও জলের ব্যবস্থা করেছিলেন)।
for when Jezebel cut off the LORD’s prophets, Obadiah took one hundred prophets, and hid them fifty to a cave, and fed them with bread and water.)
5 আহাব ওবদিয়কে বললেন, “দেশে যত জলের উৎস ও উপত্যকা আছে, তুমি সেসব স্থানে যাও। হয়তো আমাদের ঘোড়া ও খচ্চরগুলি বাঁচিয়ে রাখার উপযোগী কিছু ঘাসপাতা আমরা পেয়েও যেতে পারি, সেক্ষেত্রে আমাদের কোনও পশু আর হয়তো আমাদের মারতে হবে না।”
Ahab said to Obadiah, “Go through the land, to all the springs of water, and to all the brooks. Perhaps we may find grass and save the horses and mules alive, that we not lose all the animals.”
6 অতএব দেশের যে এলাকাগুলিতে তাদের যেতে হত, সেগুলি তারা দুই ভাগে বিভক্ত করে নিয়েছিলেন। আহাব একদিকে গেলেন ও ওবদিয় অন্যদিকে গেলেন।
So they divided the land between them to pass throughout it. Ahab went one way by himself, and Obadiah went another way by himself.
7 ওবদিয় পথ দিয়ে যাচ্ছিলেন, এমন সময় তাঁর সঙ্গে এলিয়ের দেখা হল। ওবদিয় তাঁকে চিনতে পেরে মাটিতে উবুড় হয়ে পড়ে বললেন, “হে আমার প্রভু এলিয়, এ কি সত্যিই আপনি?”
As Obadiah was on the way, behold, Elijah met him. He recognized him, and fell on his face, and said, “Is it you, my lord Elijah?”
8 “হ্যাঁ, আমিই,” তিনি উত্তর দিলেন। “যাও, গিয়ে তোমার মনিবকে বলো, ‘এলিয় এখানেই আছেন।’”
He answered him, “It is I. Go, tell your lord, ‘Behold, Elijah is here!’”
9 “আমি কী দোষ করেছি,” ওবদিয় জিজ্ঞাসা করলেন, “যে আপনি আপনার এই দাসকে মেরে ফেলার জন্য আহাবের হাতে তুলে দিচ্ছেন?
He said, “How have I sinned, that you would deliver your servant into the hand of Ahab, to kill me?
10 আপনার ঈশ্বর জীবন্ত সদাপ্রভুর দিব্যি, এমন কোনও দেশ বা রাজ্য বাকি নেই, যেখানে আমার মনিব আপনার খোঁজে লোক পাঠাননি। আর যখনই কোনও দেশ বা রাজ্য দাবি করেছে আপনি সেখানে নেই, তখনই তিনি তাদের দিয়ে শপথ করিয়ে নিয়েছিলেন, যে সত্যিই তারা আপনাকে খুঁজে পায়নি।
As the LORD your God lives, there is no nation or kingdom where my lord has not sent to seek you. When they said, ‘He is not here,’ he took an oath of the kingdom and nation that they did not find you.
11 কিন্তু এখন আপনি আমায় বলছেন, আমি যেন গিয়ে আমার মনিবকে বলি, ‘এলিয় এখানে আছেন।’
Now you say, ‘Go, tell your lord, “Behold, Elijah is here.”’
12 আমি জানি না, আপনার কাছ থেকে আমি চলে যাওয়ার পর সদাপ্রভুর আত্মা আপনাকে কোথায় নিয়ে যাবে। আমি যদি আহাবকে গিয়ে বলি এবং তিনি আপনাকে খুঁজে না পান, তবে তিনি আমাকেই হত্যা করবেন। অথচ আপনার এই দাস আমি আমার যৌবনকাল থেকেই সদাপ্রভুর আরাধনা করে আসছি।
It will happen, as soon as I leave you, that the LORD’s Spirit will carry you I do not know where; and so when I come and tell Ahab, and he cannot find you, he will kill me. But I, your servant, have feared the LORD from my youth.
13 হে আমার প্রভু, আপনি কি শোনেননি ঈষেবল যখন সদাপ্রভুর ভাববাদীদের হত্যা করছিল তখন আমি কী করেছিলাম? আমি সদাপ্রভুর ভাববাদীদের মধ্যে একশো জনকে দুটি গুহায়—এক একটিতে পঞ্চাশ জন করে—লুকিয়ে রেখে তাদের জন্য খাবার ও জলের ব্যবস্থা করে দিয়েছিলাম।
Was not it told my lord what I did when Jezebel killed the LORD’s prophets, how I hid one hundred men of the LORD’s prophets with fifty to a cave, and fed them with bread and water?
14 আর এখন কি না আপনি আমাকে আমার মনিবের কাছে গিয়ে একথা বলতে বলছেন, ‘এলিয় এখানে আছেন।’ তিনি তো আমায় মেরে ফেলবেন!”
Now you say, ‘Go, tell your lord, “Behold, Elijah is here”.’ He will kill me.”
15 এলিয় বললেন, “আমি যাঁর সেবা করি, সেই সর্বশক্তিমান জীবন্ত সদাপ্রভুর দিব্যি, আমি অবশ্যই আজ আহাবের সামনে নিজেকে উপস্থিত করব।”
Elijah said, “As the LORD of Armies lives, before whom I stand, I will surely show myself to him today.”
16 অতএব ওবদিয় গিয়ে আহাবের সঙ্গে দেখা করে তাঁকে সব কথা বললেন, এবং আহাবও এলিয়ের সঙ্গে দেখা করতে গেলেন।
So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him; and Ahab went to meet Elijah.
17 এলিয়ের দেখা পেয়ে আহাব তাঁকে বললেন, “ওহে ইস্রায়েলের অসুবিধা সৃষ্টিকারী লোক, এ কি তুমি?”
When Ahab saw Elijah, Ahab said to him, “Is that you, you troubler of Israel?”
18 “আমি ইস্রায়েলে অসুবিধা সৃষ্টি করিনি,” এলিয় উত্তর দিলেন। “কিন্তু আপনি ও আপনার বাবার কুলই তা করেছেন। আপনারা সদাপ্রভুর আদেশ পরিত্যাগ করে বায়াল-দেবদের অনুগামী হয়েছেন।
He answered, “I have not troubled Israel, but you and your father’s house, in that you have forsaken the LORD’s commandments and you have followed the Baals.
19 এখন ইস্রায়েলের সর্বত্র খবর পাঠিয়ে লোকদের ডেকে আনুন, যেন তারা কর্মিল পাহাড়ে আমার সাথে দেখা করে। আর বায়ালের সেই 450 জন ও আশেরার সেই 400 জন ভাববাদীকেও নিয়ে আসুন, যারা ঈষেবলের টেবিলে বসে ভোজনপান করে।”
Now therefore send, and gather to me all Israel to Mount Carmel, and four hundred fifty of the prophets of Baal, and four hundred of the prophets of the Asherah, who eat at Jezebel’s table.”
20 অতএব আহাব সমস্ত ইস্রায়েলে খবর পাঠিয়ে ভাববাদীদের কর্মিল পাহাড়ে সমবেত করলেন।
So Ahab sent to all the children of Israel, and gathered the prophets together to Mount Carmel.
21 এলিয় লোকদের সামনে গিয়ে বললেন, “আর কত দিন তোমরা দুটি অভিমতের মাঝে দ্বিধাগ্রস্ত হয়ে থাকবে? সদাপ্রভু যদি ঈশ্বর হন, তবে তাঁর অনুগামী হও; কিন্তু বায়াল যদি ঈশ্বর হয়, তবে তারই অনুগামী হও।” কিন্তু লোকেরা কিছুই বলেনি।
Elijah came near to all the people, and said, “How long will you waver between the two sides? If the LORD is God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him.” The people did not say a word.
22 তখন এলিয় তাদের বললেন, “সদাপ্রভুর ভাববাদীদের মধ্যে এখানে একমাত্র আমিই আছি, কিন্তু বায়ালের ভাববাদীরা সংখ্যায় 450 জন।
Then Elijah said to the people, “I, even I only, am left as a prophet of the LORD; but Baal’s prophets are four hundred fifty men.
23 আমাদের জন্য দুটি বলদ নিয়ে এসো। বায়ালের ভাববাদীরা নিজেদের জন্য একটি বলদ বেছে নিক, ও সেটি কেটে টুকরো টুকরো করে কাঠের উপর সাজিয়ে রাখুক কিন্তু তাতে যেন তারা আগুন না ধরায়। আমিও অন্য বলদটি প্রস্তুত করে সেটি কাঠের উপর সাজিয়ে রাখব কিন্তু তাতে আগুন দেব না।
Let them therefore give us two bulls; and let them choose one bull for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on the wood, and put no fire under; and I will dress the other bull, and lay it on the wood, and put no fire under it.
24 পরে তোমরা নিজেদের দেবতার নাম ধরে ডেকো, ও আমিও সদাপ্রভুর নাম ধরে ডাকব। যিনি আগুনের দ্বারা উত্তর দেবেন, তিনিই ঈশ্বর।” তখন সব লোকজন বলে উঠেছিল, “আপনি ভালো কথাই বলেছেন।”
You call on the name of your god, and I will call on the LORD’s name. The God who answers by fire, let him be God.” All the people answered, “What you say is good.”
25 এলিয় বায়ালের ভাববাদীদের বললেন, “একটি বলদ বেছে নিয়ে তোমরা প্রথমে সেটি প্রস্তুত করো, যেহেতু সংখ্যায় তোমরাই বেশি। তোমাদের দেবতার নাম ধরে ডাকো, কিন্তু আগুন জ্বালিয়ো না।”
Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, “Choose one bull for yourselves, and dress it first, for you are many; and call on the name of your god, but put no fire under it.”
26 অতএব যে বলদটি তাদের দেওয়া হল, সেটি তারা প্রস্তুত করে রেখেছিল। পরে তারা সকাল থেকে দুপুর পর্যন্ত বায়ালের নাম ধরে ডেকেছিল। “হে বায়ালদেব, আমাদের উত্তর দাও!” এই বলে তারা চিৎকার করছিল। কিন্তু কোনও উত্তর পাওয়া যায়নি; কেউ উত্তর দেয়নি। তারা আবার তাদের তৈরি করা যজ্ঞবেদি ঘিরে নাচতেও লাগল।
They took the bull which was given them, and they dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, “Baal, hear us!” But there was no voice, and nobody answered. They leaped about the altar which was made.
27 দুপুর হতে না হতেই এলিয় তাদের বিদ্রুপের খোঁচা দিতে শুরু করলেন। তিনি বললেন, “আরও জোরে চিৎকার করো! সে তো অবশ্যই একজন দেবতা! হয়তো সে গভীর ধ্যানে মগ্ন হয়ে আছে, হয়তো বা সে খুব ব্যস্ত, বা কোথাও বেড়াতে গিয়েছে। হতে পারে সে হয়তো ঘুমাচ্ছে আর তাকে জাগাতে হবে।”
At noon, Elijah mocked them, and said, “Cry aloud, for he is a god. Either he is deep in thought, or he has gone somewhere, or he is on a journey, or perhaps he sleeps and must be awakened.”
28 তাই তারা আরও জোরে চিৎকার করতে শুরু করল এবং তাদের লোকাচার অনুসারে, রক্তের ধারা প্রবাহিত না হওয়া পর্যন্ত তরোয়াল ও বর্শা দিয়ে নিজেদের শরীর ক্ষতবিক্ষত করে তুলেছিল।
They cried aloud, and cut themselves in their way with knives and lances until the blood gushed out on them.
29 দুপুর গড়িয়ে গেল, তবু তারা সন্ধ্যাকালীন বলিদানের সময় পর্যন্ত তাদের ক্ষিপ্ত ভাববাণী আউড়ে গেল। কিন্তু কোনও উত্তর আসেনি, কেউ উত্তর দেয়নি, কেউ তাতে মনোযোগ দেয়নি।
When midday was past, they prophesied until the time of the evening offering; but there was no voice, no answer, and nobody paid attention.
30 তখন এলিয় সব লোকজনকে বললেন, “এখানে আমার কাছে এসো।” তারা তাঁর কাছে এসেছিল, ও তিনি ভেঙে পড়ে থাকা সদাপ্রভুর যজ্ঞবেদিটি মেরামত করলেন।
Elijah said to all the people, “Come near to me!”; and all the people came near to him. He repaired the LORD’s altar that had been thrown down.
31 সেই যাকোব থেকে উৎপন্ন বংশের সংখ্যানুসারে এলিয় বারোটি পাথর হাতে তুলে নিয়েছিলেন, যাঁর কাছে সদাপ্রভুর এই বাক্য উপস্থিত হল, “তোমার নাম হবে ইস্রায়েল।”
Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the LORD’s word came, saying, “Israel shall be your name.”
32 সেই পাথরগুলি দিয়ে তিনি সদাপ্রভুর নামে একটি যজ্ঞবেদি নির্মাণ করলেন, এবং সেটির চারপাশে দুই কাঠা বীজ ধারণ করতে পারে, এত বড়ো একটি নালা কেটে দিলেন।
With the stones he built an altar in the LORD’s name. He made a trench around the altar large enough to contain two seahs of seed.
33 তিনি কাঠ সাজিয়ে, বলদটি টুকরো টুকরো করে কেটে কাঠের উপর সাজিয়ে রেখেছিলেন। পরে তিনি তাদের বললেন, “চারটি বড়ো বড়ো বয়ামে জল ভরে সেই জল বলির পশু ও কাঠের উপর ঢেলে দাও।”
He put the wood in order, and cut the bull in pieces and laid it on the wood. He said, “Fill four jars with water, and pour it on the burnt offering and on the wood.”
34 “আবার এরকম করো,” তিনি বললেন, ও তারা আবার তা করল। “তৃতীয়বারও এরকম করো,” তিনি আদেশ দিলেন, ও তারা তৃতীয়বার তা করল।
He said, “Do it a second time;” and they did it the second time. He said, “Do it a third time;” and they did it the third time.
35 বেদি উপচে জল গড়িয়ে পড়েছিল ও এমনকি নালাও ভরিয়ে তুলেছিল।
The water ran around the altar; and he also filled the trench with water.
36 বলিদান উৎসর্গ করার সময় ভাববাদী এলিয় এগিয়ে এসে প্রার্থনা করলেন: “হে সদাপ্রভু, অব্রাহাম, ইস্হাক ও ইস্রায়েলের ঈশ্বর, লোকেরা আজ জানুক যে ইস্রায়েলে তুমিই ঈশ্বর এবং আমি তোমার দাস ও আমি তোমার আদেশেই এসব কাজ করেছি।
At the time of the evening offering, Elijah the prophet came near and said, “LORD, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant, and that I have done all these things at your word.
37 আমায় উত্তর দাও, হে সদাপ্রভু, আমায় উত্তর দাও, যেন এইসব লোক জানতে পারে যে তুমি তাদের অন্তর আবার ফিরাতে চলেছ।”
Hear me, LORD, hear me, that this people may know that you, LORD, are God, and that you have turned their heart back again.”
38 তখন সদাপ্রভুর কাছ থেকে আগুন নেমে এসেছিল এবং বলির পশু, কাঠ, পাথর ও মাটি পুড়িয়ে ছাই করে দিয়েছিল, এবং নালার জলও নিকেশ করে ফেলেছিল।
Then the LORD’s fire fell and consumed the burnt offering, the wood, the stones, and the dust; and it licked up the water that was in the trench.
39 সব লোকজন যখন এই দৃশ্য দেখেছিল, তারা মাটিতে উবুড় হয়ে পড়ে চিৎকার করে উঠেছিল, “সদাপ্রভুই ঈশ্বর! সদাপ্রভুই ঈশ্বর!”
When all the people saw it, they fell on their faces. They said, “The LORD, he is God! The LORD, he is God!”
40 তখন এলিয় তাদের আদেশ দিলেন, “বায়ালের ভাববাদীদের ধরে ফেলো। কেউ যেন পালাতে না পারে!” তারা তাদের ধরে ফেলেছিল, ও এলিয় তাদের কীশোন উপত্যকায় নামিয়ে এনে সেখানে তাদের হত্যা করলেন।
Elijah said to them, “Seize the prophets of Baal! Do not let one of them escape!” They seized them; and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and killed them there.
41 আর এলিয় আহাবকে বললেন, “যান, ভোজনপান করুন, কারণ প্রবল বৃষ্টির শব্দ শোনা যাচ্ছে।”
Elijah said to Ahab, “Get up, eat and drink; for there is the sound of abundance of rain.”
42 অতএব আহাব ভোজনপান করতে চলে গেলেন, কিন্তু এলিয় কর্মিল পাহাড়ের চূড়ায় উঠে গিয়ে, মাটিতে হাঁটু মুড়ে, নিজের মুখটি দুই হাঁটুর মাঝখানে রেখে বসেছিলেন।
So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he bowed himself down on the earth, and put his face between his knees.
43 “যাও, সমুদ্রের দিকে তাকিয়ে থাকো,” তিনি তাঁর দাসকে বললেন। আর সে গিয়ে তাকিয়ে থেকেছিল। “সেখানে কিছুই নেই,” সে বলল। সাতবার এলিয় বললেন, “তুমি ফিরে যাও।”
He said to his servant, “Go up now and look toward the sea.” He went up and looked, then said, “There is nothing.” He said, “Go again” seven times.
44 সপ্তমবারে সেই দাস এসে খবর দিয়েছিল, “মানুষের হাতের মতো ছোটো একখণ্ড মেঘ সমুদ্র থেকে উঠে আসছে।” অতএব এলিয় বললেন, “যাও, আহাবকে গিয়ে বলো, ‘হ্যাঁচকা টান মেরে আপনার রথটি ওঠান ও বৃষ্টি বাধ সাধার আগেই আপনি চলে যান।’”
On the seventh time, he said, “Behold, a small cloud, like a man’s hand, is rising out of the sea.” He said, “Go up, tell Ahab, ‘Get ready and go down, so that the rain does not stop you.’”
45 এদিকে, আকাশ কালো মেঘে ছেয়ে গেল, বাতাস উঠেছিল, প্রবল বৃষ্টিপাত শুরু হল এবং আহাব রথে চড়ে যিষ্রিয়েলে চলে গেলেন।
In a little while, the sky grew black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. Ahab rode, and went to Jezreel.
46 সদাপ্রভুর শক্তি এলিয়ের উপর নেমে এসেছিল, এবং নিজের আলখাল্লাটি কোমরবন্ধে গুঁজে নিয়ে তিনি আহাবের আগেই দৌড়ে যিষ্রিয়েলে পৌঁছে গেলেন।
The LORD’s hand was on Elijah; and he tucked his cloak into his belt and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.
